There’s no escape from the all-out Hollywood marketing mayhem; super creative cosplay is everywhere; and everywhere you turn there is something new, absurd and undeniably magical!

Scary cosplay outside in the Gaslamp promoting the TV series Medinah. It’s late Wednesday afternoon. It’s 2017 San Diego Comic-Con Preview Night!
I couldn’t go into the San Diego Convention Center for Preview Night this year. (I was fortunate to do so a couple times in the past.) So instead I walked around outside and took photos of the late afternoon fun.
Not much cosplay, but I did spot a couple instances of it. Mostly it was just people wandering about looking at the many pop culture attractions that are open free to the public. That’s one very cool aspect of San Diego Comic-Con!
I spotted Iron Man outside Atomic in the Gaslamp. He told me they have a cool Comic-Con exhibit upstairs. This cool Darth Vader with hookah was outside the Myst Lounge.A nice lady representing the Gaslamp Quarter told me their Rabbitville exhibit will be open tomorrow.Lego superheroes in the windows of My Yogurt.Outside of the Snoopy & Belle pop-up shop in the Gaslamp.People peer into AMC’s Deadquarters. Three canine celebrities get their photo taken during PAWmicon. Cosplay goes to the dogs.
The humans can’t have all the fun during Comic-Con!
Check out some photos of dog cosplay at today’s PAWmicon event, which took place at Hazard Center. Helen Woodward Animal Center had adoptable dogs dressed up as superheroes, and friendly pups proceeded to save smiling humans! As the bumper sticker says: Who rescued who?
Dogs brought by those attending the event were also dressed up for a costume contest. I know–a bit silly–but every two-legged and four-legged critter at PAWmicon seemed quite happy!

I’m starting to get excited about upcoming 2017 San Diego Comic-Con! It begins in less than two weeks!
Now that I’m beginning to think again about Comic-Con, I’ve been remembering some of the cool cosplay photos I’ve taken the past few years. Just for fun I’ve collected links to old blog posts that contain lots of cosplay photos!
I live in downtown San Diego and love to walk around with my camera. This year I’m going to photograph lots more Comic-Con stuff! You can follow Cool San Diego Sights via Facebook or Twitter!
Star Wars stormtroopers riding Segways patrol the parade route during the Fourth of July in Coronado.
Check out these cool Star Wars cosplay photos! During today’s Independence Day parade in Coronado, a group of Star Wars enthusiasts strutted their stuff to the delight of the huge crowd lining Orange Avenue! It seemed to me the adults were just as excited as the kids! I was able to snap a few quick photographs. Enjoy!
A TIE fighter heads down Orange Avenue! Has the Galactic Empire taken over Coronado? Is there no hope?Uh, oh. Look who I spotted. Darth Vader! Let’s hope it’s just a guy enjoying Star Wars cosplay.Fear not! Rey is here to fight against the dark side of the Force! And here comes Princess Leia in some sort of futuristic vehicle! I don’t think that TIE fighter has a chance.I believe that is one of the Rebel Alliance’s ace pilots. Are those a bunch of clones? No, just young kids who’ve turned into Star Wars fans!

A Japanese pop culture party–Yokai Omatsuri–will be held during San Diego Comic-Con at the Japanese Friendship Garden in Balboa Park. (Click this image to enlarge it for easy reading.)
I found out something really cool this afternoon! During a quick visit to the Japanese Friendship Garden in Balboa Park, I learned that they’ll be hosting a Japanese pop culture party during San Diego Comic-Con!
Click the flyer’s photo to read it. A supernatural world of anime and manga will take over the garden and its beautiful Inamori Pavilion on Friday, July 21st, from 7:30pm to 11:30pm. There will be cosplay, a costume contest, food, activity booths and lots of yokai running about. Yokai is Japanese for supernatural monsters, demons, phantoms, etc.
Anyone visiting San Diego for Comic-Con should spend some time in Balboa Park anyway. It is truly our city’s crown jewel. And as a member of the Japanese Friendship Garden myself, I assure you the beautiful garden is well worth a visit!
You can learn more about the Japanese pop culture party and find a link to purchase tickets online here. If you purchase tickets before July 10th, you will receive an Early Bird bundle pack with tickets redeemable for food at the event!

Pirate Con is coming to the Maritime Museum of San Diego during Comic-Con week.
Ahoy mateys! You despicable pirates, buccaneers, scoundrels! Avast! See what I discovered while innocently walking along the Embarcadero!
Pirate Con is coming to San Diego! The event will be held at the Maritime Museum of San Diego on July 21, 2017, the Friday of Comic-Con week. There will be pirate and mermaid cosplay and even hidden treasure: a free Funko Pop! I don’t know if hardtack, bone soup and rum will be served.
Looks like salty fun! And no better place to have it!
Maritime Museum of San Diego presents Pirate Con on July 21, 2017.Lots of pirate and mermaid cosplay will be seen at Pirate Con in San Diego! Paarrrty like a pirate!I’m not sure if these beady-eyed pirates will attend.I certainly hope this piratical two-sworded villain isn’t present!Goodness gracious! There seem to be a lot of pirates populating my blog. Chances are at least one of these rascals will attend Pirate Con at the Maritime Museum of San Diego!
