Krapopolis fills the Omni for Comic-Con!

Walk into the lobby of the Omni San Diego Hotel during 2022 Comic-Con and you might, for a moment, think you’ve been transported to ancient Greece. Then, looking around more closely, you’ll see you’ve been transported into the future–of FOX television!

Krapopolis, a new animated series that is coming up, has an unusual cast of characters, from the look of it. I think I see Medusa and the Kraken, too!

The graphics are on columns in the lobby and at the elevators–inside the elevators, too!

You won’t mistake the place for the Parthenon on the Acropolis. Because it’s Krapopolis!

Have fun Mega Merching at Comic-Con!

Will you be “mega merching” at 2022 Comic-Con?

This new San Diego Trolley wrap, promoting Amazon Prime Video, suggests mega merching might be a fun activity. (As long as it doesn’t “take you” to a maxed out credit card!)

I’m assuming mega merchers are buyers, not sellers, though I suppose the term might refer to either or both. I did a Google search of this odd term, and found 5 results. That will change pretty soon!

All I know is that I’ll be a “mega swagger” when I walk around downtown and the convention center with my swag bag in a couple of weeks. Another new word combination!

So far, Amazon Prime Video has wrapped several other trolley cars with another slightly unusual saying, which you can see here. They seem to be going the route of Syfy, which decorated trolleys during past Comic-Cons with all sorts of fun nerdy quotes.

She-Hulk banners appear in Gaslamp for Comic-Con!

Comic-Con is a month away, and banners have already been hung in the Gaslamp Quarter for the big international pop culture event!

The street lamp banners promote upcoming television series She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, which will appear on Disney+. It will be the eighth television show based on the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The green superhero She-Hulk will be portrayed by actress Jennifer Walters. Other actors from the MCU will appear in the show, including Mark Ruffalo as Hulk, Benedict Wong as Wong from Doctor Strange, and Tim Roth as the gamma irradiated villain Abomination.

Very cool!

San Diego readies for Peacemaker and The Freak Brothers!

Comic-Con Special Edition, during this Thanksgiving weekend, will be featuring a few cool offsite activations in and around San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter. They are free and open to the public.

I walked along Martin Luther King, Jr. Promenade this morning and saw a big new Peacemaker display and workers readying an offsite that promotes Tubi’s new show The Freak Brothers. (UPDATEpossibly The Freak Brothers! It might actually be the Peacemaker Proving Ground. We’ll have to see Friday!)

NBC will also be promoting La Brea in Gaslamp Square next to the Tin Fish, across from the San Diego Convention Center. I took updated photos of that offsite yesterday, which you can see here.

A security guard told me a homeless person tried to rip off the plastic wrapping, breaking the Peacemaker sign below.

Here’s a photo of the big Peacemaker building wrap on the Marriott Marquis. Peacemaker is a show about the DC Comics character, who appeared in the latest Suicide Squad movie. The new series will be on HBO Max.

Here come more pics from this Thanksgiving morning. It looks like (maybe) The Freak Brothers will be living in a trailer. The animated Tubi show satirizes both the drug counter-culture and the establishment. It’s based on an underground comic about stoner characters and their crazy exploits.

The Garden of Peace sign makes me wonder if this isn’t actually the Peacemaker Proving Ground, referenced here. We’ll find out!

UPDATE!

Turns out I was wrong! What I thought might be The Freak Brothers activation is actually the Peacemaker Proving Ground. That would explain the obstacle course I photographed earlier.

A bus promoting The Freak Brothers will be parked by the Hilton San Diego Bayfront!

I’ll have to check that out this weekend!

Six years of colorful Comic-Con trolleys!

It’s mid-June. If this were an ordinary year, brand new trolley wraps would be rolling out right now for San Diego Comic-Con. But, alas, like most events, Comic-Con has been cancelled in 2020 due to the worldwide coronavirus pandemic.

I’ve photographed just about every Comic-Con trolley wrap that has appeared in the past six years. As mobile billboards, they’re used to promote popular entertainment–primarily new or ongoing television series. They’re designed to catch the attention of Comic-Con fans and create a sense of anticipation and excitement.

This year I’ll miss watching the weeks of preparations that lead up to the world’s greatest pop culture convention. Seeing streets, buildings and trolleys massively transformed for the epic event is one more thing that makes living in downtown San Diego so much fun!

If you, like me, are saddened by the cancellation of Comic-Con in 2020, I figured we could revisit these very colorful trolley wraps from the past six years. How many do you remember or recognize?

Marketing and fun, combined into one.

I’m sure most people know the truth. Comic-Con is mostly about marketing. Movies, television shows, video games, toys, collectibles, even lunch–all swirl before the eyes of excited fans.

And yet–it’s all so much fun!

How does one draw the line between the calculated marketing and the unabashed fun?

The big one is almost here!

I’ve taken even more photos of 2018 Comic-Con preparation around San Diego. I walked all around this morning–Wednesday–and observed that workers are frantically getting the many offsites around the Gaslamp, Petco Park and San Diego Convention Center ready for tomorrow.

Tonight is Preview Night.

Let the party begin!

Check it out! More cool stuff is appearing around downtown for 2018 Comic-Con!

The Jack Ryan Experience has been under construction for a few days now, and that helicopter I spied in the parking lot is now way up in the air on a huge steel structure. It appears the zip line will descend from the helicopter across a backdrop depicting a rugged Middle Eastern landscape!

I also spotted three gigantic banners hung from the parking structure of the Hilton San Diego Bayfront. They advertise two upcoming video games: Shadow of the Tomb Raider and Kingdom Hearts III.

Ten days to go until Comic-Con officially opens!

The graphic backdrop appears complete. Lots of crates in the parking lot indicate there's much more set to up before this large offsite is ready.

I was completely wrong! In a recent Comic-Con trolley post, I surmised that ABC wouldn’t have a trolley wrap this year. Look what I spied this morning! Whiskey Cavalier, a show that’s coming to the ABC television network, is being promoted in San Diego.

A quick check of the San Diego Comic-Con Unofficial Blog shows there are two additional Bob’s Burgers wraps debuting, as well. There are so many trolley wraps now I can hardly keep track of them!

Now I have to keep my eyes peeled for those new Bob’s Burgers trolleys! And who knows what else?

What fun!

I can’t believe how quickly trolley wraps are popping up for 2018 San Diego Comic-Con. The past few days I keep seeing new ones! And Comic-Con is still over a month away!

You might have already seen the three Syfy trolley wraps I’ve photographed, promoting six of their shows with fan art. If not, you can see them here.

Today I spotted a humorous wrap that promotes one of the most popular television shows of all time: The Simpsons! FOX seems to have pretty entertaining trolley wraps every year.

Meanwhile, I’ll keep on looking for more new Comic-Con stuff!
