Lots of activity on the grass behind the San Diego Convention Center. It’s the Saturday before 2017 Comic-Con! A big wrap is being applied to the Bayfront Hilton!
This afternoon I walked all around the San Diego Convention Center and the Gaslamp Quarter. The application of building wraps and the construction of most outdoor venues is well underway with five days to go until Comic-Con! I didn’t walk around Petco Park. The Giants are in town through Sunday. I’ll probably head that way in the next couple days to see what, if anything, is going on!
These guys are starting to set up the Adult Swim site.A guy said Fox will have their site in the middle area of the grass, like last year.Looks like a lot of work is still to be done! They’ve got five days!I see a wrap being applied to the Marriott Marquis! The outdoor site for FX this year, like past years, will be on the grass right in front of the Hilton.A closer look at the developing Marriott wrap. It will promote the TBS comedy television series People of Earth.Working on the Midnight, Texas attraction near the Tin Fish.More Netflix wraps are going up on the Hilton Gaslamp. Will Smith peers brightly from between palm trees.Looks like another strange thing is being attached to a building in downtown San Diego. Five days until the start of 2017 Comic-Con!
I also noticed that work continues at The Tick Takeover site! I haven’t seen a 20-foot-tall animatronic Tick yet! You’ll see it shortly after I see it!

The positively huge Blade Runner 2049 Experience is under construction on First Avenue for 2017 San Diego Comic-Con!
I was wrong! In a previous post, I thought the huge structure being built on First Avenue just north of Harbor Drive was for a private party. Wrong! It’s going to house the Blade Runner 2049 Experience. And it’s positively enormous! I also learned it will be free to the public–no Comic-Con badge required. You can bet I’ll be checking that out!
Today I also saw that progress has been made at Amazon’s The Tick Takeover site at the corner of First Avenue and Harbor Drive, and at the Midnight, Texas site near the Tin Fish. Here are some photos. Six days to go until Comic-Con!
A cool 4D experience being built near the Tin Fish promotes the upcoming NBC show Midnight, Texas. It appears to me this old motorhome will be part of a spooky Midnight, Texas attraction at Comic-Con.A building with broken windows and a big gaping hole has appeared along MLK Promenade for Amazon’s The Tick Takeover. And attached to the building is this. Every hero must face their destiny. Are you ready to face yours? The Tick.

A cool wrap promoting The Defenders on Netflix has been applied to a Gaslamp building for 2017 San Diego Comic-Con.
This morning there’s some Comic-Con preparation going on in San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter. Three Netflix wraps are already up and construction has just begun on the Midnight Texas outdoor experience by the Tin Fish!
I got some photos!
A Comic-Con wrap in the Gaslamp promotes the second season of Stranger Things. The supernatural series thrills audiences on Netflix.Construction has begun on the Midnight, Texas 4D experience near the Tin Fish, across from the San Diego Convention Center. The show is coming to NBC.A third Netflix wrap on a Gaslamp building for Comic-Con. This one promotes upcoming fantasy film Bright, starring Will Smith and Joel Edgerton.

The fifth trolley wrap for 2017 San Diego Comic-Con promotes the Syfy channel. Because you’re a pro at cons. Check in. Geek out. It’s a fan thing.
There’s a fifth trolley wrap debuting for 2017 San Diego Comic-Con! I don’t recall there being as many as five different wraps before!
I got lucky and got some pics this morning. This new wrap promotes the Syfy channel and appeals to real fans of science fiction and pop culture entertainment. The graphics don’t appear to be all that fancy, but the words flashing by might turn out to be effective.
I also saw a couple other new sights. Some Game of Thrones banners were hung today along the trolley tracks near the convention center. And a gigantic structure is being built north of The Tick Takeover. A guy watching Amazon’s smaller areas along MLK Promenade thought it was for NBC. During past Comic-Con’s that parking lot has been utilized for private studio parties, if I recall correctly. (Of course, if you know more than me, please leave a comment!)
Syfy appeals to diehard fans of science fiction and highly imaginative entertainment.Don’t judge a book by its movie. Which came first: The dragon or the egg?Along the trolley tracks near the San Diego Convention Center some Game of Thrones banners were hung today. Winter is here.A huge structure being built just north of Amazon’s The Tick venue, on First Avenue, south of Island Avenue… UPDATE! I learned this will be the site of the Blade Runner 2049 Experience! One more quick shot of the new Syfy trolley wrap. Only amateurs stand up when the credits roll. It’s a fan thing.
Here are two more pics that I took later. Several different San Diego Trolley cars feature different sayings!

A pad has been set up near the Convention Center Trolley Station on MLK Promenade. Amazon will set up their The Tick venue here.
While no building wraps are being applied quite yet, a few interesting things have popped up near the San Diego Convention Center that indicate 2017 Comic-Con will soon be here! I walked all over the place after work and this is what I saw. A week and a half to go! (I spoke to a guy at the Amazon site, and he said they’re getting started a bit early, before lots of other construction trucks arrive in the coming days.)
Another nearby pad that I also believe will be utilized by Amazon during 2017 San Diego Comic-Con.Have u seen this person? I noticed these flyers all around the Gaslamp Quarter and also along Friars Road in Mission Valley today. It appears Nickelodeon is engaging in a guerrilla marketing campaign during 2017 San Diego Comic-Con.The second of three types of flyers I spotted. It seems we’re supposed to search for characters in the popular animated television series Hey Arnold! The Chuck Jones Gallery in the Gaslamp will be featuring DC and Marvel Comics fine art, and other great pop culture stuff, as usual!A poster promoting Shooter on USA Network is already up near the Tin Fish and Hard Rock Hotel. The Omnia Nightclub will have Rave of Thrones during Comic-Con weekend! The San Diego Trading Company in the Gaslamp is already stocked up with lots of Comic-Con gear! Finally, I spotted Supergirl patrolling the Gaslamp, making sure no supervillains have appeared yet!

A few vessels the public can visit during the San Diego Wooden Boat Festival at the Koehler Kraft boatyard on Shelter Island.
Yesterday I headed over to Shelter Island to check out the annual San Diego Wooden Boat Festival. The event is taking place all Father’s Day weekend at the Koehler Kraft boatyard. Proceeds from the festival help out local charities.
Koehler Kraft is where many wooden boat owners head if their vessel needs a repair or upgrade. The boatyard was founded in 1938. I enjoyed poking around the place, and examining some very cool vintage wooden boats. There were also beautiful newer boats, and a few had unusual, fascinating designs.
Enjoy my photos and read the captions to learn more!

Construction of a new fire station at Pacific Highway and Cedar Street. When finished this station will serve the North Embarcadero and Little Italy.
Many cranes now fill the sky in downtown San Diego. They seem to be concentrated in East Village and along the waterfront. I’ve lived in downtown for a long time, and I don’t recall seeing this amount of construction activity in many, many years.
As you might have noticed, I like to walk along the Embarcadero. During the past few months I’ve been watching the progress of several construction projects not far from the water. Every time I go for a stroll it seems that I have to tilt my head farther and farther back…
It’s fascinating to watch new buildings slowly rise into the sky–and to watch as old buildings are swept away. It seems that human ambition is like an ocean that crashes wave after wave, unceasingly changing the cityscape. The things we see today will in time be replaced, and, like ourselves, become a small bit of history.
Here are some photos. Most I took late this afternoon. (The first four photos, which show the new fire station construction, were taken very recently.)
Read the captions!
The new fire station is west of the railroad and trolley tracks, in order to avoid potential delays when fire engines are dispatched to emergencies near San Diego’s harbor.I took this photo (and the next) about a week after those first two photos. A new waterside dining experience is coming called Portside Pier.Portside Pier will be just south of the Star of India and include a dock for visiting boats. The Navy Broadway Complex has evolved since the early 1900’s and has served the Pacific Fleet in various capacities. The tall Pacific Gate by Bosa appears to be nearing completion. A maze of yellow tape. That’s what you call an abundance of caution.
Here’s something funny I saw this morning as I walked through downtown. There was so much yellow caution tape wrapped around this building, it looked like a crazy web or a funhouse maze . . . or some sort of daunting, unsolvable puzzle!
A terribly tangled web. Abandon All Hope, Ye Who Enter Here!

Fun LEGO creations on display during the House of Denmark lawn program in Balboa Park.
Wow! Check these out! Here are some super cool LEGO creations that I saw today in Balboa Park!
I was walking among the International Cottages when I spied tables with all sorts of fun and amazing stuff made of LEGO bricks. The builders were more than happy to show off their creations!
When I was told the House of Denmark was having their lawn program today, it all made sense. The LEGO company is based in Denmark, of course.
I also enjoyed looking at some cool Viking weapons and crafts displayed on the lawn nearby. If you want to check that out, visit my Beautiful Balboa Park blog by clicking here!
This tent was a magnet for the young and young-at-heart. Talented LEGO builders were showing off some amazing creations!I learned this castle was built from a kit. Everything else on display, however, was an original creation. Here we go! I see a fun train, a Viking ship and what looks like cars from an amusement park ride.Look at all the LEGO characters! I see the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Marvel comic book superheroes and supervillains and many others! This first batch of LEGO creations was put together by Matt Armstrong, who runs MonsterBrick Creations! Now let’s check out some cool Star Wars characters made of LEGO bricks. These were created by Miro Dudas of Humble Bricks. His detailed Viking ship was awesome! An up-close look at the LEGO ship and its Viking warriors! This American flag created by another skilled LEGO builder was inspired by the Carlsbad Flower Fields! It took a long time and much patience to assemble! There are three levels of colored flowers. The first level had to be installed first, then the second, then the third. The end result is amazing.OMG! One of my favorite movie scenes! It’s a LEGO version of the Chocolate Room from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory!Pure imagination! A meadow full of candy made of LEGO bricks! I think Roald Dahl, author of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, would have been delighted by this.I was told that is Augustus Gloop near the bottom reaching for a chocolate flower. Don’t fall into the river! Watch out for the pipes! Here comes an Oompa Loompa sailing down the chocolate river! The Chocolate Room was built by LEGO master John Cooper!A young man had made a number of super cool LEGO characters using his imagination.Awesome! The young man demonstrates how to make an adjustment to one LEGO creation. This table on the International Cottages lawn contained all sorts of unique LEGO creations made by visitors to the House of Denmark event.I’m not sure what these guys are making. It could be literally anything!

Member of the Maritime Museum of San Diego points to work being done on the Star of India while passersby watch with interest.
Look what I chanced upon today. As I approached the Embarcadero, I noticed a huge crane next to the Star of India. The restored top third of the foremast had just been installed! (You might recall from an earlier blog post this wooden section had suffered from rot and needed some work.)
While I stood and watched, the crane lifted two shrouds, one after another, to be attached to the foremast. Then came several cables! The activity above and below was fascinating to watch. I wish I had a more thorough understanding of all that I saw. Volunteers and employees of the Maritime Museum of San Diego were using their knowledge and skills to help preserve an important part of San Diego and world history!
Crane lifts up guys with a shroud, part of the ship’s standing rigging, to be attached to the starboard side of the newly installed, refurbished top third of the foremast. The ladder-like shroud dangles in the air, near the top of the foremast.Volunteers and employees of the Maritime Museum of San Diego watch from the deck below.Working high in the San Diego sky, above the oldest active sailing ship in the world. The beautiful Star of India was built in 1863.That first shroud is done. Those working on the Embarcadero beside the ship prepare the second shroud to be hoisted. Now it’s time to attach the second shroud to the port side.A worker on the foremast grabs hold.Back down again to solid ground!Lots of cables still need to be attached to the foremast, to help it resist the force of the wind, plus gravity and inertia when the tall ship pitches and rolls. One super strong, tarred cable awaiting installation is the starboard royal backstay. It will be attached to the masttop.Guys watch from the historic ship’s rail.Up goes one of the many cables that are part of Star of India’s rigging.A small bit of history in San Diego.Up they go! I bet the view is great! The bottom end of the cable is in place, now back up to the top of the foremast…Up, up…Higher…Intrigued by the operation, people watch from below. A member of the Maritime Museum of San Diego explains the proceedings.Another photo of one shroud being hoisted. I was told this work began early in the morning. As much work will be done today as possible!
