Wonder Woman and Batman pose for photos in Balboa Park. It seems these superheroes can never get enough public adulation.
The Justice League was out in force today patrolling Balboa Park!
Superman, Wonder Woman and Batman were leading a team of powerful superheroes and supposedly reformed supervillains down El Prado, keeping an eye out for nefarious doings.
I followed the superhero team in order to capture a bit of the action.
(I learned this cosplay group is called the Science Fiction Coalition. It was cool to see many of these guys later on in the cafe inside the Federal Building, future home of the Comic-Con Museum. It kind of reminded me of that superhero-themed eatery Planet Krypton in the graphic novel Kingdom Come!)
I spotted Penguin and Riddler with members of the Justice League. Fortunately, Batman stood nearby keeping an eye on these two supposedly reformed supervillains.Batman! The Penguin is coming after me with one of his sinister umbrellas! Help!I was subjected to a Burgess Meredith-style quack-laugh from Penguin, but escaped otherwise unscathed. Now it’s time for the heroic Justice League to begin their patrol of Balboa Park.DC superheroes (and villains) in full costume begin down El Prado, looking for some action.Batwoman has a young fan. During my walk about Logan Heights today I met a few friendly members of the San Diego Art Team. They were creating even more cool street art just north of the intersection of 31st Street and Commercial Street.
Some of their recently spray painted art features popular Marvel Comics characters, particularly those related to the X-Men!
If the style of their work seems familiar, I blogged their Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle mural (which has since been painted over) here and some of their other graffiti-style artwork here.
The San Diego Art Team is composed of Logan Heights community members who enjoy being creative and energizing their neighborhood with bold, colorful public art!
Very cool!

Cool comic book superheroes, villains and other characters are spray painted on a long wall in Logan Heights!
Check out this awesome spray paint street art on a wall south of the intersection of 31st Street and Commercial Street in Logan Heights! It’s loaded with comic book superheroes, villains and other cool characters!
The mural is a work currently in progress. Today I was fortunate to meet the primary artist, who goes by the name Fizix. I learned that most of the characters in the large, colorful mural are his artwork. I also learned that additional work on this very cool mural is by the artist ABSO.
Does the name Fizix ring a bell? Perhaps you’ve seen his work here and here. Because I photograph so much street art all around San Diego, it’s possible his work appears elsewhere on Cool San Diego Sights and I simply don’t realize it.
Fizix is actually Alex Julian, a talented artist in San Diego who can be found @alexfizix. His blog, which features some really good graphic novel art and his bio, can be enjoyed here.
His expertise is illustration, book covers, digital art, murals, horror caricatures and comic book coloring. His artwork has a distinctive style that I really like.
Check out the following photos!

Fun palm frond art. I recognize Ronald McDonald and Batman.
Here’s one last batch of fun and funny photos from 2018 San Diego Comic-Con, including more great examples of cosplay.
I confess I didn’t stand in long lines for some of the more popular offsite attractions–I mainly just walked around. Watching people. Taking it all in. That’s what I love to do.
I hope you had as much fun as I did!
Now I’ll probably take a rest from blogging until next weekend. On Saturday, I’m going on a special tour at the San Diego Museum of Art.
Have a great week!

Visitor to San Diego Comic-Con takes a photo with The Nyght, patrol leader of the Xtreme Justice League, a group of real superheroes in San Diego.
Today I was walking around outside San Diego Comic-Con when I met a real-life superhero. His name is The Nyght. He’s a member of the Xtreme Justice League.
The Xtreme Justice League began in San Diego, but now has superheroes operating around the country. Their primary mission is to help local communities stay safe.
These volunteer superheroes, wearing outlandish protective garb, are highly trained for what they do. They conduct safety patrols in rough neighborhoods and offer a variety of public safety services. They report dangerous activity that they observe to law enforcement. They strive to provide positive role models for at-risk youth. They oppose vigilantism–they believe in compassion, nonviolence, volunteerism and heroism.
They also work to help the homeless.
Tomorrow–Saturday July 21, 2018–members of Xtreme Justice League from all around the country will converge in Balboa Park’s Pepper Grove to help San Diego’s homeless. Their event is from 10:30 am to 2:00 pm. If you’d like to help them out, they accept donations of items such as individual tissue packs, socks, sunglasses, water bottles, sunscreen and sleeping bags.
You can learn more about who the Xtreme Justice League is, and what they do by visiting their website here!
The Xtreme Justice League works to increase community safety. They encourage residents to become involved in helping the homeless and reducing crime. Be your own hero! The Nyght tells me a little about the Xtreme Justice League, and how they and their members from around the country will help the homeless this Saturday in Balboa Park.

It’s Thursday and 2018 San Diego Comic-Con is in full swing!
The Gaslamp Quarter was starting to get a little crazy when I walked through in the early afternoon. Fifth Avenue wasn’t packed absolutely full like sardines, however. But I know that it will be!
Enjoy some more photos of creative cosplay and a variety of fun stuff!

Cool cosplay of Soul Eater characters at 2018 San Diego Comic-Con!
Early this morning, as I walked from Cortez Hill down to the Gaslamp, I was joined by others heading toward the convention center for the very first day of 2018 San Diego Comic-Con.
The offsites still hadn’t opened, and one or two that I passed didn’t appear to be quite ready. But long lines were already forming!
I spotted lots of great cosplay as I walked along Martin Luther King Jr. Promenade, then over the Harbor Drive pedestrian bridge to see the action behind the San Diego Convention Center.
Buses packed with Comic-Con attendees were arriving continuously from hotels around the city. By this afternoon, the streets and sidewalks will be jammed with crazy activity!
