Please forgive me if I make changes to this tiny work of fiction as I reread it in the days, weeks and months to come. A writer’s thoughts and feelings can evolve over time.
In October many artists came together in Pacific Beach to paint a beautiful new mural on the long north wall of the PB Water Store. The large mural depicts life under the ocean’s surface.
Images include a jellyfish, a mysterious underwater siren, a seahorse beside delicate coral, a grumpy-looking turtle, many hammerhead sharks, several colorful fish, an oyster with pearl, and a couple of crabs. According to names I observed on the wall, the artists involved in this amazing project included Beth Emmerich, Gloria Muriel, Diana DeAugustine, Erin Yoshi, Kara “KJ” Ashley and Justin Pelletier.

This morning I published another short story. This one is titled The Station Sparrow.
The humorous little tale was inspired by my own life experience.
I often see birds inside the enormous passenger waiting room of Santa Fe Depot, the train station in downtown San Diego. Feathered infiltrators come through the wide open doors and walk about the floor pecking at crumbs.
That got me to thinking. And imagining. And laughing.

Another October! Time for another Maker Faire San Diego in Balboa Park!
Today, after checking out Trolley Dances at Hazard Center, I headed into Balboa Park to simply walk around and absorb the creativity. It’s amazing what human intelligence and imagination can produce! The potential is limitless! Marvelous new inventions keep on coming!

The roots of small plants are bound in living moss!This guy had created some small but very cool working submarines.UCSD students had created an unmanned aerial vehicle for an academic competition.Creative kids were cutting out words and piecing together their stories with Words To Go!This guy was melting glass and forming a beautiful jewelry pendant.Ladies were making crafts inside the House of Sweden at the International Cottages. Perhaps they should have been a part of Maker Faire San Diego!Do You Trust is a sculpture that enfolds visitors and plays an audio recording of poetry concerning trust.This cool minibike is made of odd objects, like a vegetable strainer, radio tuner, cereal bowl and umbrella. It’s called the Time Machine.Alastair, The Great Fairy Tinkerer hangs out in front of the future Comic-Con Museum in Balboa Park.A small human meets friendly Know Mann – Giant Robot Puppet!

Thank you for following along during my walks around San Diego. We’ve peered into unexplored corners, lingered in the sunshine. We’ve had a laugh or two. We’ve experienced a good deal of wonder in a beautiful city.

I’ve been thinking a lot lately–about the best way to spend my weekends and free time before and after work.
As I’ve grown older, I’ve become more inclined to sit in a tranquil place and simply write. Deep down that’s what I really love. So I’ve decided from this point forward I will concentrate more on writing fiction, less on photoblogging.
I’ll still walk, of course–and if I happen to spy something cool or interesting, I’ll post photos right here on Cool San Diego Sights, or my companion blog Beautiful Balboa Park. But once I find that perfect seat, my old camera will be set to one side as I pick up notebook and pen.
Some of those scribbled words will eventually make it to my website Short Stories by Richard. That’s where small philosophical works of fiction await curious readers.
My camera might be idle for hours as I brainstorm, dream and write, but my feet are still restless! I’m sure more photos will appear in the days ahead. Many corners await exploration!
Two youthful entrepreneurs in San Diego invite prospective customers to Build Your Own Cookie!
This morning I headed down to check out the first ever San Diego Kidpreneur Expo at Waterfront Park. And look what I discovered!
Kid entrepreneurs were greeting visitors and showing off all sorts of cool, very creative products!
I had spent almost all of my pocket money on a haircut before heading on down, so I’m afraid I didn’t buy anything. But I did take a bunch of inspirational photos!

These items were created by the Legacy Creations Kids.This kid at the Brave Dragon table made lots of exciting amusement table games. His dad works as a designer.Here’s a fun Lego ring toss game.Lots of business was transacting at the Pokemon Center.More slime for sale! It seems to be a very popular item!A young artist was showing his great artwork at a booth called Artsy Peak.The smiling young man shows his super colorful artwork!Here’s the Kate B Slime Co. Looks like a great selection of slime is available!Two young people operate Double Lens Photography. The U.S. Sand Sculpting Challenge in San Diego, California is considered to be one of the premier Labor Day events in all the United States. A funky face has been spray painted on a utility box on El Cajon Boulevard in City Heights.
I recently walked through several blocks of City Heights, along a short stretch of El Cajon Boulevard from 35th Street to Interstate 15. I remained on the south side of San Diego’s historic boulevard, where I saw many examples of colorful street art.
