A stormy day today. Dramatic clouds marched across the sky.
After work I climbed to the top of the San Diego Convention Center for a sweeping view.
To the south, the Coronado Bay Bridge and Hilton caught a few late rays from the sun. To the north, magnificent clouds glowed above the Flame of Friendship sculpture and Marriott. In the distance, beams of light touched the bay, making the water shimmer.

Cool cosplay of Soul Eater characters at 2018 San Diego Comic-Con!
Early this morning, as I walked from Cortez Hill down to the Gaslamp, I was joined by others heading toward the convention center for the very first day of 2018 San Diego Comic-Con.
The offsites still hadn’t opened, and one or two that I passed didn’t appear to be quite ready. But long lines were already forming!
I spotted lots of great cosplay as I walked along Martin Luther King Jr. Promenade, then over the Harbor Drive pedestrian bridge to see the action behind the San Diego Convention Center.

The big one is almost here!
I’ve taken even more photos of 2018 Comic-Con preparation around San Diego. I walked all around this morning–Wednesday–and observed that workers are frantically getting the many offsites around the Gaslamp, Petco Park and San Diego Convention Center ready for tomorrow.
Tonight is Preview Night.

Four days to go until 2018 San Diego Comic-Con! There’s so much cool stuff popping up around the convention center, I can hardly keep track of it all!
This afternoon I walked around the entire area, checking out some of the building wraps and offsites that have begun to appear. Construction hasn’t begun on the Experience at Comic-Con or Deadquarters yet. I was told Comedy Central will occupy the same space at the Broad City indoor coloring book last year, but I could see no indication of activity there, either.
Check out these photos and read the captions for more information. It seems Comic-Con gets bigger and more exciting every year!

Replacement of the San Diego Convention Center’s white “sails” is underway. The old fiberglass sails, dating from the time when the beautiful convention center debuted in 1989, have been removed.
Without the Sails Pavilion’s roof, which shelters the enormous 90,000 square foot exhibit space below, the glass walls, the supporting structures and crisscrossing cables combine with levels of scaffolding to form something that resembles an unusual crystal lattice. Which makes for intriguing photographs!
This afternoon I walked across the top of the San Diego Convention Center and took a close look for myself. As you can see, one can discern all sorts of unique patterns. The geometric complexity is a delight for the eye.
If you find yourself in downtown San Diego, check it out for yourself!

I couldn’t go into the San Diego Convention Center for Preview Night this year. (I was fortunate to do so a couple times in the past.) So instead I walked around outside and took photos of the late afternoon fun.
Not much cosplay, but I did spot a couple instances of it. Mostly it was just people wandering about looking at the many pop culture attractions that are open free to the public. That’s one very cool aspect of San Diego Comic-Con!
