Comic-Con first signs: Timeless, Conan, Thunderbirds, more!

A cool Conan O’Brien building wrap is going up on the Marriott Marquis for 2016 San Diego Comic-Con, even as the MLB All-Star Game wrap hasn’t been completely removed!

Preparation in downtown San Diego for 2016 Comic-Con has finally begun in earnest today, now that the MLB All-Star Game has concluded. Late this morning I walked all over the place–through the Gaslamp, behind the convention center, down the MLK Promenade, around Petco Park–just to see what might have popped up so far.

Talking to some people, I learned a little bit about what we’ll see outside 2016 San Diego Comic-Con! I learned that Timeless and Thunderbirds Are Go will be a center of attention. So will virtual reality, sponsored by Amazon. And I could see the huge presence of Conan O’Brien with my own eyes!

Of course, the massive undertaking required to prepare for San Diego Comic-Con has barely gotten started. Many more wraps and outdoor activities should begin popping up in the days ahead. I’ll keep a sharp lookout!

Read the photo captions, where I describe what I learned about a couple of venues being built outside Comic-Con…

By the Tin Fish, across from the convention center, an attraction is being built for San Diego Comic-Con. This will promote the upcoming NBC television series Timeless. It appears to be a time machine!

Cool exhibit: Baseball and comic books combined!

Display cases in San Diego's Central Library feature cool comic books and original art with a baseball theme! Perfect for both San Diego's MLB All-Star Game and Comic-Con!
Display cases in San Diego’s Central Library feature cool comic books and original art with a baseball theme! Perfect for both San Diego’s MLB All-Star Game and Comic-Con!

The Major League Baseball All-Star Game and San Diego Comic-Con are taking place at nearly the same time! They are separated by only one week. So a very cool exhibit related to both events has been created in the downtown San Diego library. You can find this exhibit on the first floor, just beyond the lobby.

Lots of baseball-related comic books and original comic artwork is on display, taken from the vast baseball collection of Andy Strasberg, who once was Vice President of Marketing for the San Diego Padres.

It was hard to take photos without reflections on the glass display cases. Seeing these comics in person is so, so much better!

This comic book art will remain on public display through San Diego Comic-Con and long after–until August 26. Since the Central Library is just a couple blocks from the San Diego Convention Center, and across the street from Petco Park, where other fun activities are planned–why not head over to check it out!

One of the three large Son of Zorn banners hung on the parking garage of the Hilton San Diego Bayfront for 2016 Comic-Con.

Zorn the friendly warrior has invaded downtown San Diego!  This morning I spotted him right next to the convention center! He’s “hanging out” on three enormous banners draping the parking garage of the Hilton San Diego Bayfront!

I’m not sure where his son is… Perhaps the two got separated in the large San Diego Comic-Con crowd depicted in the fun promotional graphic!

I haven’t observed any Comic-Con wraps applied to buildings yet; right now, the only huge building wrap near the San Diego Convention Center is that MLB All-Star Game one on the Marriott Marquis that I posted several days ago…

Hang tight!  The fun around here is just getting started!

The Son of Zorn, an imaginative combination of animation and live action, will premiere on September 25 on FOX.

San Diego Comic-Con trolley: Dead of Summer!

A new 2016 San Diego Comic-Con trolley wrap promotes Dead of Summer on the Freeform cable channel, from the Executive Producers of Once Upon a Time and Lost.

I was wrong! There’s a fourth San Diego Comic-Con trolley wrap for 2016, and I got photos of it this morning!

This brand new San Diego trolley wrap advertises the television show Dead of Summer, which premiered today on the Freeform cable channel! The images are a bit creepy and suggest death in the hot, languid summer. It seems this new horror show, created by the Executive Producers of Once Upon a Time and Lost, concerns a Midwestern summer camp called Camp Stillwater, and is set in the 1980s. Has anyone seen the first episode yet?

Should you notice this body in the tire swing has no top half visible, I'm guessing you'll have a horrified reaction!

Heads up! Lots of Comic-Con related photos should appear on my blog this year!  It’s going to be a load of fun!

Conan as Superman, Stormtrooper, Ghostbuster and Joker!

Exactly like last year, 2016 San Diego Comic-Con trolley wraps sponsored by TBS feature Conan O'Brien turned into crazy Funko Pop! characters.
Just like last summer, 2016 San Diego Comic-Con trolley wraps sponsored by TBS feature Conan O’Brien turned into crazy Funko Pop! characters.

Here are photos of what will probably be the final trolley wrap for 2016 San Diego Comic-Con.  I hope I’m proven wrong!

Today a number of trolleys cars featuring brand new Conan O’Brien Funko Pop! figures began heading up and down the Green Line; I counted at least five cars so far. The wrap is quite similar to last year’s TBS Comic-Con offering, but this time Conan has been transformed into four completely different pop culture characters.

In 2016 Conan is Superman, a Stormtrooper, a Ghostbuster and Joker. Of course, movies involving these characters are either imminent or on the way, so the wraps work as advertisements for those movies, for Funko Pop! vinyl figure toys, for San Diego Comic-Con, and lastly for Conan O’Brien’s talk show on TBS.

I’ve heard that like last year, Conan will be performing live at the Spreckels Theater on Broadway in downtown San Diego. Catch him and his inimitable humor starting July 20!

Conan O'Brien will be Live From Comic-Con starting July 20. His talk show antics will be enjoyed in the Spreckels Theater in downtown San Diego.

Looks to me as if Conan is a Star Wars Stormtrooper here. He must've lost his helmet.

Yes, here's Conan as a Ghostbuster, trying not to be slimed. Even though those black eyes make him look possessed and evil.

And finally Conan O'Brien has been turned into good old Superman. Not sure if this is the cranky good old Superman who sometimes kills his enemies.

More signs that San Diego Comic-Con is approaching!

2016 San Diego Comic-Con will bring fans a new version of the familiar Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. trolley wrap. This year, the design features a burning chain!
2016 San Diego Comic-Con will bring fans a new version of the familiar Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. trolley wrap. This year, the design features a burning chain! Ghost Rider, perhaps?

We’re still a month away from 2016 San Diego Comic-Con, but a few signs of its approach keep popping up. Today I got some more photos. Most notably, I got pics of another completely new Comic-Con trolley wrap for this year. It appears a bit like the familiar Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. design that fans have seen in the past, but this time the bold graphics includes a fiery burning chain!

I also got pics that show what the San Diego Symphony will be up to this year. Check out the photos to see for yourself!

Son of Zorn and The Exorcist on a Comic-Con trolley!

Today I spotted the first cool trolley wrap for the fast-approaching 2016 San Diego Comic-Con!

Check out these photos. I had to time my shots strategically, because the trolleys don’t wait at a station for very long!

Each side of this San Diego trolley car advertises a separate television show; both will debut this coming Fall season on FOX. First up you see graphics for Son of Zorn, which involves an animated warrior character among live-action family members. It’s a unique comedy idea that sounds weird but fun! The second side of the trolley wrap advertises The Exorcist, which is already a cultural phenomenon.

I’m positive more 2016 San Diego Comic-Con trolley wraps are on the way, so stay tuned!

Animated warrior Zorn will be coping with live-action family members (including his son) in an unusual hybrid television comedy on FOX this Fall. Taking a stab at the real world.

A sign that 2016 San Diego Comic-Con is near has appeared along the Embarcadero. Many street lamps are hung with cool Doctor Strange banners! Marvel’s Sorcerer Supreme and his upcoming movie will definitely be a big source of excitement at this year’s Comic-Con. A little more than a month to go!

Want to see lots more Comic-Con stuff? Then stay tuned to this blog, Cool San Diego Sights! As some of you may know, I live in downtown San Diego and have compiled quite a few Comic-Con photos over the past couple years. This year I should be able to take a ton more! I was walking through Balboa Park, on a mission to check out today’s Native American Pow Wow, when I was stopped in my tracks by a fearsome knight in shining golden armor!

Check out a few super cool photos! Someone was posing in extraordinarily elaborate gold armor near the entrance to the Museum of Man. It might be the most extraordinary medieval cosplay I’ve ever seen!  (My first impression, upon seeing the helmet, is that this might be an elite servant of Sauron.  If that’s the case, those brave heroes of Gondor should be very much afraid!)

I spoke very briefly to the guy in the costume. Nothing in particular was being promoted. My impression is that he made the exotic suit of armor himself. Wow! I can’t wait for San Diego Comic-Con! It’s two months away!

UPDATE!

In the comments, Andrew identified the cosplay as Imperius, the Archangel of Valor from Blizzard’s Diablo series. Cool!
