Super cool! These great comic book paintings at the Comic-Con Museum were created by students from Westview High School!
Students of Westview art teacher Keith Opstad produced these speed paintings during the San Diego Comic-Con Museum’s First Annual Educator’s Night in 2024.
These really are speed paintings? Made while teachers from around San Diego watched? Wow–that’s truly amazing!
Iron Man, Poison Ivy, Harley Quinn and Batman make a splash on a wall inside the museum’s second floor Makerspace.
I noticed that today, in the Makerspace, guests could use beads to create a starry sky and constellation, then tell a story about it! The activity is called Constellations Across the WHOniverse. Why? An epic Doctor Who exhibition is now showing at the Comic-Con Museum!
UPDATE!
During my next visit to the Comic-Con Museum, I noticed Superman had appeared, too!

Most of these cosplay photos were taken today as I walked all around. A few were taken on Wednesday, the day of Preview Night.

An iconic prop: the famous phaser used by William Shatner as Captain James T. Kirk in the original Star Trek television show.
A very special exhibit is on display during San Diego Comic-Con week. You’ll find it at the Comic-Con Museum in Balboa Park. Famous one-of-a-kind movie and television props, original artwork and collectibles can be viewed before they are auctioned off this coming Sunday, July 28, 2024!
Comic-Con Museum Presents: TCM | Julien’s Auctions 2024 Spotlight Series: Harry Potter and Other Heroes will excite fans of the Harry Potter movies, Batman movies, and X-Men movies. In addition, two historic, one-of-a-kind objects in the museum gallery will delight those who love the original Star Trek television series!
Visitors to the museum will see a whole roomful of props and artwork, all of which could belong to you at the end of this week! (The auction of the Star Trek props, including William Shatner’s phaser and communicator, will be held separately later this year.)
To learn more, check out the Comic-Con Museum’s website by clicking here! It explains: Highlights of the auction include an array of iconic costumes, production material, and beyond from various productions of the Harry Potter film franchise; Marvel’s greatest superheroes and their most high-octane pieces will hit the auction block featuring original storyboard illustrations by storyboard artist Gabriel Hardman from the X-Men blockbuster X2; and from DC Comics’ Batman Begins, items wielded by Christian Bale, such as a stunt grapple gun prop and batarang prop. Plus, Other Surprises Crash the Party!
I took a few photos of the exhibit for you to enjoy. Head up to Balboa Park and see everything for yourself before the online auction in the museum’s auditorium on Sunday!

Going to Comic-Con 2024 in San Diego? Would you like to sink your teeth into Batman? Or Deadpool? Or Yoda? Or even Superman?
You’ll have that sweet opportunity should you walk down Fifth Avenue in front of the Pendry hotel’s Provisional restaurant! These superhero and pop culture donuts will be there and waiting for hungry fans during Comic-Con 2024!
I swung by the Donut Bar in downtown San Diego this morning and saw my smiling friends who work there. They already have some demo Comic-Con donuts, which they held up for me to photograph! Freshly made donuts like these will be available at their pop-up in the Gaslamp Quarter.
Super yum!
I’m not sure sinking my teeth into R2-D2 would gain the approval of my dentist. Too bad!

Batman and more characters have appeared on the latest San Diego Comic-Con trolley!
The awesome trolley wrap, which I believe is the sixth design so far for Comic-Con 2024, promotes six shows on Amazon Prime. Those shows are Batman: Caped Crusader, The Legend of Vox Machina, Sausage Party: Foodtopia, Hazbin Hotel, The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy, and Invincible.
I got some pretty good pics this afternoon. Check it out!

The world of Batman features crazy, mad characters. So it’s not surprising that superheroes Batman, Batgirl and the supervillain Mad Hatter are lurking in one of Balboa Park’s most crazily creative corners: the San Diego Sculptors Guild courtyard in Spanish Village!
Batman and Batgirl together form a bench on which anybody can sit. Snap a selfie with two legendary heroes! The artwork, titled Bats United, was built by artist Kim Ogburn.
Across the courtyard of sculptures, a Mad Hatter chair invites fans of DC Comics supervillains. It’s the Mad Hatter Chatterchair!
Are you an Alice in Wonderland fan? Perhaps this Mad Hatter isn’t part of Batman’s rogues gallery, but merely mad. The chair might make the perfect accessory for a Mad Tea Party!
Both fun seats are for sale outside Studio 36, home of the San Diego Sculptors Guild!

A super cool San Diego Comic-Con tradition will continue in 2023! San Diego’s world-famous Donut Bar will be offering unique (and tasty) donuts that have to be seen to be believed!
The collection of donuts to be offered this year was previewed today. Joining Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman donuts are new edible creations that represent Captain America and Spider-Man. And there are Yoda and R2-D2 donuts to represent Star Wars. And, given the popularity of the recent Super Mario Bros. Movie, there are donuts for fans of Mario, too!
There are gold token donuts that work kind of like Willy Wonka’s Golden Tickets. Turn a token over, discover an image of Mario, and you win a trip to Universal Studios! There’s also a cool donut that features a replica of the most valuable Pokémon collectible card! And many more!
You’ll be able to grab some of these awesome donuts during Comic-Con, from Thursday to Sunday, at the Donut Bar downtown location (631 B Street), and in the heart of the Gaslamp at a pop-up shop inside the Pendry Hotel (550 J Street)!
Chef Santiago of the Donut Bar is smiling as usual.Spidey is clinging to a yummy donut!8-bit Mario for fans of old school video games.Wonder Woman.Yoda.
Look who welcomed yours truly to the Donut Bar. Princess Peach!

It’s Sunday, the last day of Comic-Con 2022. Things are beginning to wind down a little bit, but thousands are still enjoying the annual pop culture convention.
In the morning fans were heading to the San Diego Convention Center, and many families had driven in from around the city on what is typically a more family-oriented day.
The offsite lines aren’t as bad as Saturday, but they’re still fairly long. I’m afraid I didn’t have the patience to wait. I like to keep moving. Perhaps I’ll go on one more walk around Comic-Con this afternoon and analyze the situation again.
This is what I saw…

Look at this! Even more cool stuff is appearing in downtown San Diego on the Sunday before 2022 Comic-Con!
A castle has materialized, Batman has arrived (in two places that I saw), and a couple of Comic-Con offsite activations have begun construction. I spied something awesome going past on a forklift and a mysterious something you might help me identify!
Workers getting everything ready have three more days. And the big Petco Park Interactive Zone is still a parking lot full of cars. Better get busy!
Some signs for the Comic-Con Shuttle Bus Stops are out on sidewalks already.A unique Batmobile has arrived! I saw this cool vehicle by the Hard Rock Hotel. I was told it belongs to a perennial Batman cosplayer! The NBCU Corner by the Tin Fish is just beginning to set up. Ready to see some awesome Batman street art? Check this out!
A long fence and gate in Logan Heights was painted earlier this year with characters from the Batman Family and with assorted members of the Batman Rogues Gallery.
The spray painted artwork is by prolific San Diego muralist Fizix (@alexfizix), whose more ordinary name is Alex Julian.
You can see this great comic book inspired street art on 33rd Street, just south of Broad Avenue.
The long mural by Fizix actually continues up the fence and onto Broad Avenue, but the subject becomes something quite different, so I figured I’d post those photographs on a separate blog, which will be coming up shortly.
If you like this comic book-style street art, you’ll like another mural painted by Fizix several years ago with even more superhero and pop culture characters. You can enjoy photos of that amazing mural by clicking here!
