Comic-Con banners have been hung inside the Federal Building in Balboa Park, former home to the Hall of Champions, and future home to the Comic-Con Center for Popular Culture!
Look what I spied today!
Just before noon I entered the Federal Building in Balboa Park–former home to the Hall of Champions, and future home of the museum-like Comic-Con Center for Popular Culture. My stomach was grumbling, demanding a cheeseburger from the Home Plate Cafe, where I often eat lunch on Sundays. (While most of the Federal Building is now vacant, the cafe remains open just inside the historic building’s entrance.)
Being tall, I peered over a partition that runs along the perimeter of the old Hall of Champions lobby, and look what I saw!
Several Comic-Con banners have recently been hung inside the building!
According to what I’ve read, the Comic-Con Center for Popular Culture will open in 2019, but funds still need to be raised. It’s my understanding that sales of the exclusive Comic-Con 2018 Mondo print will be part of the fundraising effort.
I don’t know if an event of some kind will be held in the Federal Building during 2018 Comic-Con. Whatever the reason for the recent appearance of Comic-Con banners–it’s definitely a cool sight that got me excited!

UPDATE!
In early 2019, during an event at the site of the future Comic-Con Museum, I learned the finished museum is scheduled to open in May 2021!

With the appearance of this year’s Comic-Con trolley wraps, many people I speak to are starting to get excited.
Now that I’m thinking about Comic-Con, too, it has occurred to me that over the years my blog has featured lots of photos concerning one of the absolute biggest franchises in pop culture: Star Wars!
I’ve rounded up a bunch of links that would be fun to check out. You’ll find unique photos of Star Wars artwork, models, cosplay, and even some humorous Star Wars street art!
A little before noon, I enjoyed a fine walk through the Gaslamp Quarter, mostly down Fifth Avenue.
A lot of people were about for a late Saturday morning. So many exciting events going on today.
The World Cup. Taste of the Gaslamp. The Etsy market at Horton Plaza Park. People out on a walking tour, learning about the Gaslamp’s extraordinary old buildings and lively history. And the tourists, the workers, and downtown residents like me.
Enjoy this small slice of life in San Diego.

What a crazy week. I was so busy tracking down Comic-Con trolley wraps, I didn’t have time to sort through photographs I took in Balboa Park last Sunday.
When I finally reviewed the photos this morning, I noticed they all had a wonderful something in common: simple sunshine and happiness.
Balboa Park never grows old.

Conan O’Brien flies a jet pack on a 2018 San Diego Comic-Con trolley!
I got photos of the Conan O’Brien trolley wrap that debuted yesterday in San Diego for 2018 Comic-Con. Sorry the photos are a bit bright. Our nearest star was shining very brightly this morning!
Here they are!

Linda Belcher of Bob’s Burgers is having a good time among lots of hamburgers.
Here’s another tasty helping of 2018 Comic-Con goodness!
I finally got close-up photos of the Bob’s Burgers wrap on a San Diego trolley. It’s been out there for a few days now, but I was lucky today and encountered it at a Green Line station on my way home!
That makes four different FOX television shows promoted on trolleys this year. At this point, it doesn’t appear to me that ABC will be represented, as they have been in years past.
According to the San Diego Comic-Con Unofficial Blog, there’s an eighth trolley wrap out there as of today waiting to be photographed–one that promotes Conan O’Brien on TBS. He’s bringing his talk show to Comic-Con once again for 2018! I believe he’ll be at the Spreckels Theatre.
I’ll have to go search for that new Conan wrap tomorrow. Fingers crossed!
(For my blog followers who aren’t really into Comic-Con: fear not! I’ll endeavor to photograph some other fun things around San Diego in the days ahead!)

I found another cool trolley wrap for the upcoming 2018 San Diego Comic-Con! This one promotes The Gifted on FOX with the word PERSIST written above the show’s name. I haven’t been watching The Gifted, so someone might leave a comment with an explanation.
I do know the show is connected to Marvel’s popular X-Men, with young characters who develop mutant powers. They have to survive in a world where mutants are feared and considered dangerous.
Enjoy some photos!

I spotted another FOX trolley wrap for 2018 San Diego Comic-Con! This one promotes the funny show Family Guy, and features Peter and Lois Griffin among a heap of beer cans!
I took these quick photos after running a couple blocks to the City College station a short while ago. I barely caught the trolley before it headed off again.
Enjoy!

Marge Simpson has found herself in a sugary mess on a San Diego Trolley wrap that promotes The Simpsons during 2018 Comic-Con!
I can’t believe how quickly trolley wraps are popping up for 2018 San Diego Comic-Con. The past few days I keep seeing new ones! And Comic-Con is still over a month away!
You might have already seen the three Syfy trolley wraps I’ve photographed, promoting six of their shows with fan art. If not, you can see them here.
Today I spotted a humorous wrap that promotes one of the most popular television shows of all time: The Simpsons! FOX seems to have pretty entertaining trolley wraps every year.
Meanwhile, I’ll keep on looking for more new Comic-Con stuff!

The stern of HMS Surprise, the beautiful ship used in the filming of Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, starring Russell Crowe.
If you’ve watched the memorable movie Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, you might recall the fictional British warship HMS Surprise was center stage for most of the film, which was set during the Napoleonic Wars.
The Maritime Museum of San Diego is now home to the working ship that was used in the filming of Master and Commander. Originally built in 1970 as a replica of the HMS Rose, a British 24-gun frigate from 1757, the ship was purchased by 20th Century Fox in 2001 and modified to appear in scenes in the 2003 film. Because of its starring role in Master and Commander, the ship was subsequently re-registered as HMS Surprise.
The critically acclaimed movie, starring Russell Crowe as Captain Jack Aubrey and Paul Bettany as Dr. Stephen Maturin, was based on a series of popular novels written by Patrick O’Brien. Russell Crowe has been lobbying for a sequel for over a decade now. According to what I’ve heard, there’s a possibility the sequel might finally be made.
The museum recently debuted a new exhibit aboard HMS Surprise called Man-of-War, and along with many new signs on the main deck and gun deck, the captain’s great cabin is now open to the public. (You can see other aspects of the new Man-of-War exhibit here. Clicking the link will take you to a past blog post concerning HMS Surprise, where I’ve added updated photographs.)
Several memorable scenes in the movie take place inside the great cabin. Among others, you might recall scenes of officers dining and strategizing as they pursue the French privateer Acheron around Cape Horn to the Galapagos Islands, and of Captain Jack Aubrey and Dr. Stephen Maturin playing the violin and cello.
While I’ve been told much of the filming of Master and Commander was done on movie sets, the great cabin visitors see on the working ship HMS Surprise is much like the one portrayed in the movie.
The great cabin of HMS Surprise is now open to the public. Several displays provide interesting information.Sign reads the Great Cabin in the stern of the Surprise was reserved for the captain’s use. Here he slept, held council with his officers, and entertained his invited guests.Photo inside the great cabin of HMS Surprise. In real life the space feels cramped and the table is small. The large stern windows are a familiar sight in the movie.Unlike most of the crew, the captain enjoyed wine and ate in style.Historically, guns were deployed in the great cabin during battles at sea. To make room for the gunners, the furniture was removed and placed in a longboat which was then towed behind the ship!Another photo inside the great cabin of HMS Surprise.Photo on wall recalls a scene in Master and Commander.
