Summer Solstice Exhibit showcases artists at Liberty Station.

Some fine art can be enjoyed by those visiting Liberty Station in Point Loma. Eight artists who work out of studios at Liberty Station are exhibiting canvases that celebrate San Diego and our local fishing industry.

Most of the displayed pieces can be purchased. They’re all quite good, too.

The Summer Solstice Exhibit can be found in the lobby of the Dick Laub NTC Command Center building and runs May to July 2025.

While you’re at Liberty Station, just roam around. There’s so much to see and do!

(While wandering about today, I discovered a little-seen mosaic from Liberty Station’s history as Naval Training Center San Diego. I’ll blog about that next!)

San Diego’s downtown roller-skating rink returns!

Downtown San Diego is about to become even more fun! That’s because Downtown Skate will soon be returning to the the Marriot Marquis San Diego Marina hotel!

As you can see from these photos taken today, workers have been busy setting up the outdoor roller skating rink on the Marina Terrace!

If this seems familiar, perhaps you recall how Downtown Skate popped up in the same place during the holiday season. I visited back then and took these photographs.

This time Downtown Skate will be operating from June 27 to July 9, 2025. You can find the hours and other information on the event website here.

Like last time there will be food and snacks available, and DJs playing music to skate by!

Have fun in the summer sunshine beside San Diego Bay!

Demon Slayer Corps returns to San Diego!

The immensely popular Demon Slayer manga and anime is returning to San Diego for Comic-Con 2025, and there’s evidence of it already, weeks in advance.

Not only are many San Diego trolley cars wrapped with cool graphics promoting the upcoming movie Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, but now advertisements for SEGA’s video game Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Hinokami Chronicles 2 have appeared up and down Fifth Avenue in the Gaslamp Quarter!

Seeing how popular all things Demon Slayer are, I thought it would be fun to share some cosplay photographs from past Comic-Cons. A cool car, too!

Win a community quilt in Old Town San Diego!

Would you like to win a beautiful handmade quilt? You have that chance if you enter the raffle at Old Town San Diego State Historic Park!

A colorful community quilt was made with the help of volunteers, visitors, and California State Park staff, who sewed together a checkerboard of different patches, including many that are hand illustrated. The quilt will be raffled on the Fourth of July. (A variety of fun outdoor activities will be enjoyed by park visitors on Independence Day, too!)

You can view the quilt inside the park’s Robinson-Rose House Visitor Center, which is where you purchase the raffle tickets. One dollar buys a single ticket; five dollars gets you six tickets.

It appeared to me today that people have a decent chance to win this amazing quilt. The small glass jar containing tickets was perhaps a quarter full.

The cool thing is proceeds from the raffle will help fund the activities of the volunteers at Old Town San Diego State Historic Park!

Make a cosplay superhero cape for Comic-Con!

The IDEA Lab on the 4th Floor of San Diego’s Central Library will be open for maker activities before and during Comic-Con 2025!

In addition to providing cosplay repair during Comic-Con, would-be superheroes can make superhero capes in the IDEA Lab on Saturday, July 19, 2025, between 2 pm and 5 pm.

All the materials you need are provided. Yes, there will be fabric, sewing machines, and the ability to create cool designs on your cape, as in the above photograph! It’s the first time they’ve had this cape making activity since before the pandemic.

The IDEA Lab also has 3D printing available for your other cool Comic-Con creations!

I was told today that additional activities might crop up during Comic-Con, but it’s still a month away. The cosplay repair and superhero cape making are definite, however!

Less than a month to go. Is your cosplay ready?

Here are some other fun photos from inside this maker space…

Hulu Animayhem rolls back into San Diego!

Hulu Animayhem has rolled back into San Diego–on the trolley!

Anyone who’s been to Comic-Con the last few years knows Hulu has had a major presence, particularly with its elaborate offsite activation behind the San Diego Convention Center. Looks like they’ll be back for 2025 in a big way!

The Hulu Animayhem trolley wrap shows many popular characters in Hulu’s streaming cartoons–you certainly recognize a few of them! Comic-Con fans should eat this wrap up.

I love the fun, bold graphics and how they pop. There’s no doubt what is being promoted: Your Animation Destination!

Old Globe’s 90th Anniversary sculpture in Balboa Park!

A cool sculpture has appeared in Balboa Park at the center of The Old Globe theatre complex. It celebrates The Old Globe’s 90th Anniversary!

San Diego’s “flagship arts institution” has created countless great memories over nearly a century.

Cherished memories can be shared by anyone over a live feed in The Old Globe’s plaza. Go to this website, type in your Old Globe memory, and share it with other theatre lovers!

The sculpture contains images of theatrical productions over the years. So much history has been made at The Old Globe. A series of banners leading down to El Prado celebrates that history.

As one banner states: From Stephen Sondheim to August Wilson to Arthur Miller, The Old Globe has showcased the visions of the world’s greatest theatre-makers. Premiering new work, honoring the classics, and celebrating the craft of the stage, the Globe defines American theatre at the hightest level.

Another banner recalls: More than 30 Globe-launched productions went on to Broadway success, earning national acclaim...

What are some of your Old Globe memories?

I remember watching a play at the Cassius Carter Centre Stage (now called the The Sheryl and Harvey White Theatre) as a young person. I was struck by how the actors, encircled by the audience, had somehow become integral to my world and my life–at least for a time. It seemed as if these strangers had suddenly become family, bringing out the true potency of “familiar” things.

On that day I discovered the magical power of theatre. Does that make sense?

2025 California Firefighter Summer Games in San Diego!

Fourteen basketball teams from around California are competing in San Diego. It’s the 2025 Firefighter Summer Games, and the hoops action is taking place in Balboa Park at the Municipal Gymnasium!

There are teams from San Diego, Oakland, Los Angeles, Long Beach, San Francisco, Bakersfield, Redding, Fresno, Orange County and elsewhere in California.

I’m pleased to report that today San Diego in their first game beat Orange County Fire Authority 45-41. That was the situation when I peeked into the gymnasium during my Balboa Park walk.

The Firefighter Summer Games are being held in venues around San Diego. See the event website here.

Thank you to all firefighting heroes. You are very much appreciated by everyone.

May you also be heroes on the basketball court!

Fantastic Four banners for Comic-Con 2025!

Fantastic 4 banners have appeared in downtown San Diego in anticipation of Comic-Con 2025 and the release of The Fantastic Four: First Steps in late July!

The big tentpole Marvel movie is highly anticipated, and it appears promotion of the film is in high gear.

Who doesn’t love the Fantastic Four in the comics? Cool sci-fi action with far-out concepts and cosmic characters, dimensions and places, and a family of likable heroes. A lot of fans are hoping the movie lives up to very high expectations.

This is the third set of street lamp banners in downtown San Diego promoting different movies for Comic-Con 2025, which I believe is unprecedented.

One month until the big international pop culture event!

Another sign Comic-Con is on the way!

Another sign has popped up indicating San Diego Comic-Con 2025 is around the corner. A new set of banners has appeared on lamp posts in the Gaslamp Quarter, and elsewhere in downtown San Diego!

The banners promote Tron: Ares, a science fiction action movie set to release later this year. It’s the third movie in the Tron series.

(The first banners for Comic-Con 2025 promote Predator: Badlands. See those photographs here.)

Can you believe it? I’m so old that I saw the first Tron in movie theaters. The groundbreaking visuals blew everyone away back then, and the concept of virtual intelligence was mind-blowing in 1982, when mass produced home computers were a completely new thing.

Back then I had one of the very first personal computers: a ZX-81. It had, with an added expansion module, all of 16K memory! Forty three years later, the slim phone in your hand might have 16GB or more memory!

Where will we be in another 43 years? Will humans be any wiser?

All I know is that Comic-Con is a month away! Bring it on!
