Free ice cream and concert in Balboa Park!

What’s better than free ice cream and a free concert?

Free ice cream and a fantastic free concert in beautiful Balboa Park!

A huge crowd came out to the Spreckels Organ Pavilion this evening to smile, laugh, sing, and dance to the music of San Diego’s own The Moonlight Serenade Orchestra. And, of course, to devour ice cream!

The annual Ice Cream Social concert, one of many free summer Twilight in the Park concerts, was made possible by the awesome folks of Forever Balboa Park!

The music was infectious. The vibe was energetic. The audience was often clapping, and couples were swaying and spinning on the outdoor dance floor. Tunes included Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, Dancing Queen, Old Time Rock and Roll, Respect, In the Mood, Over the Rainbow, and a variety of others, including many big band classics.

The highlight for me–and it appeared to be for many–was the solo drumming performance by D. J. Jackson in the encore song Sing, Sing, Sing. He was a magician whose magic seemed limitless. I didn’t want his inspired wizardry to end.

A long standing ovation resulted!

A musician’s triumphant return to San Diego!

Many years ago I happened to attend a Spreckels Organ concert featuring an up-and-coming young organist who’d recently attended La Jolla High School. Her name was Chelsea Chen.

This evening, Chelsea Chen, now an internationally renowned organist, who has played in more famous venues and won more prizes than I can mention, returned triumphantly to San Diego, receiving loud and sustained applause for her performance during the 2022 International Summer Organ Festival.

Her fingers easily mastered Verdi, Bach, an Andrew Lloyd Webber medley, and many more–even a jazz piano piece based on the theme of The Flintstones. And, of course, she played her own stirring composition Taiwanese Suite, which incorporates beautiful folk music from Taiwan.

Her warm, graceful notes filled many ears.

As I listened I thought: That concert long ago feels like yesterday. How did the years fly by so quickly?

Enjoy the special moments.

Sunday morning walk around Comic-Con!

It’s Sunday, the last day of Comic-Con 2022. Things are beginning to wind down a little bit, but thousands are still enjoying the annual pop culture convention.

In the morning fans were heading to the San Diego Convention Center, and many families had driven in from around the city on what is typically a more family-oriented day.

The offsite lines aren’t as bad as Saturday, but they’re still fairly long. I’m afraid I didn’t have the patience to wait. I like to keep moving. Perhaps I’ll go on one more walk around Comic-Con this afternoon and analyze the situation again.

This is what I saw…

People head in toward the San Diego Convention Center on Sunday, the last day of Comic-Con.

Congratulations Rachel Smythe! Eisner Award winner for best webcomic.

Cool cosplay!

The IMDboat has already wrapped up. Or, I should say, is unwrapping.

These friendly folks are launching JAM. It’s a spoken word app for your phone. You can record or listen to mini-podcasts about a minute long! “Your story. Your voice.” Brilliant idea!

Check out the JAM homepage if you’d like to join!

Here comes Batman. He forgot to use a grappling wire.

Creative steampunk and flames cosplay!

UH OH! Looks like the dragon escaped from the House of the Dragon’s castle.

No, it’s just friendly T. rex and his buddy.

As the morning progressed, the crowd heading toward the convention center grew.

Walking during Comic-Con, a few minutes before some of the outdoor activations open.

A somewhat longish line at the Abbott Elementary offsite.

Minimalist cosplay. Nezuko’s box.

Another smaller box, with a head poking out of it.

The Dragon Ball offsite gave away lots of great swag!

Hela and her small red sidekick.

I was tossed a tiny rubber ducky that squeaks!

The cool Dragon Ball activation at Comic-Con!

If you’re into Dragon Ball, but not in San Diego, you’ll probably like these photos. I took them today at the Bandai Namco activation that is outside at Comic-Con 2022.

If you are in San Diego, head behind the Marriott Marquis hotel to the large outdoor plaza near the Marina Office (the Marriott Hotel Marina Terrace). Once you see the big statues and flashy photo op panels, you’ll know you’ve arrived.

The public is welcome, I found no lines, and no Comic-Con badge is required! There are card and video games to play, lots of figurines to check out, and more. If you get there early in the day–they open at 10 am–swag is handed out!

As promised, here are my photos. The experience is as fun as it looks!

Harry Potter witches and wizards invade Comic-Con!

Powerful witches and wizards have travelled from the world of Harry Potter to San Diego for Comic-Con 2022!

I saw the magical procession this morning and was astonished to discover so many J. K. Rowling characters present.

This awesome cosplay group has had their Comic-Con procession across from the San Diego Convention Center numerous times in the past. This year it appeared bigger and more amazing than ever!

How many characters do you recognize?

I see Snape and Dumbledore (two of them!) and McGonagall and Hagrid and Trelawney and Sprout and Tonks and Lupin and Fleur Delacour and Newt Scamander and Grindelwald and even a nascent Voldemort in the arms of that ratty Peter Pettigrew!

And Hermione! And Harry Potter himself!

And many others!

Enjoy some photos of this really great cosplay!

3rd Rock from the Sun star at Comic-Con!

Fans of the television classic 3rd Rock from the Sun will have a chance to meet one of its stars this afternoon at Comic-Con 2022!

French Stewart, who played the silly character Harry Solomon, will be interacting with fans at 2:30 pm near the COZI TV activation, on a patch of grass just outside the Omni hotel, across from the San Diego Convention Center.

I don’t know if he’ll be interrupted by a transmission from the Big Giant Head, but I suppose you’ll have to be present to find out!

French Stewart was at a private event earlier this morning when these photos were snapped.

I won’t post the photo, but I observed him shaking the hands of someone special across the rope who was a very big fan. I could see from the sudden tears it was a very big and meaningful moment in a life.

Comic-Con smiles and laughter!

Enjoy a fun collection of photographs taken during a walk outside Comic-Con this afternoon!

In addition to many cosplay photos, which I’ll post shortly, my camera captured lots of smiles and laughter.

I experienced many things.

I saw a vampire fly. I saw a flying shark. I listened to Karma sing. I saw five Sherlock Holmes. I saw a walking pickle. I got a smile and a free poster from local radio station 91X. I got a smile and some licorice from Wiley Wallaby. I saw Thor wield a huge hammer. I watched a crazy whack-a-mole.

I laughed, too!

Thursday morning cosplay and fun outside Comic-Con!

It’s Thursday morning outside Comic-Con! The fun is ramping up!

I spotted more and more cosplay as fans streamed through the Gaslamp toward the San Diego Convention Center. Lines were already forming at the offsite activations, most of which open at ten o’clock. And a huge mass of humanity was crossing Harbor Drive, heading into their first day of Comic-Con!

I got a free NFT from those two guys above! They’re promoting a brand new game on Gamisodes called Inspector Gadget. (Which explains the very first photo of this blog post.)

Grab a redeemable card if you walk down MLK Promenade and happen to see a bunch of Inspector Gadgets!

Comic-Con 2022: the fun BEGINS!

It’s finally Preview Night at Comic-Con 2022. And the fun has already begun!

Crowds are gathering and offsite activations are nearly ready, or actually open in some cases, such as The Gray Man Training Program by NETFLIX.

A bit of cosplay is appearing here and there.

Lots of fans, many with swag bags slung over shoulders, are getting a peek inside the convention center, before Comic-Con “officially” begins tomorrow!

I walked around outside in the late afternoon with my camera to capture a little bit of the fun!

The crowd is growing in the afternoon of Comic-Con Preview Night. A photo past the Gaslamp Quarter arch toward the San Diego Convention Center.

The Hard Rock Hotel is now Lumon Industries of the Apple TV+ show Severance.

It’s Rocketeer! He’s on the cover of this year’s Comic-Con Souvenir Book. (Flying over the El Cortez Hotel, where Comic-Con got started years ago.)

Medieval figures mingle in front of the castle that promotes HBO’s upcoming House of the Dragon.

This would make for one very cool farmer’s market!

Miles Morales Spider-Man poses with a big smile! I think Spidey just defeated Mysterio.

A crowd oohs and ahhs at one of the Audible sand sculptures.

Folks were already lined up for The Gray Man offsite. I think these might have been media folk. I’m a mere blogger.

Run for it!

Looks at all the humanity near the San Diego Convention Center.

Watch out! It’s Saturnino with a head!

You might want to watch out for Chucky, too.

Herman Munster and pals are on the scene promoting COZI TV.

A hugemungous Sesame Street Mecha Builders inflatable Cookie Monster! Watch out for falling crumbs!

Someone said that’s Ozzy Osbourne. A super creepy version, I guess!

The Bob’s Burgers Movie activation on the grass near the Omni will be handing out free hamburgers starting Thursday! I’ll be there!

Just wait ’til you see the massive crowds starting tomorrow.

Fear not! Moon Knight and Doctor Strange are here to save the day!

Last minute frenzy as Comic-Con is almost here!

Less than a day to go until Comic-Con officially opens for 2022! As you might imagine, lots of people are bustling around trying to get their stuff ready!

Workers at many activations are in a hurry to complete the downtown “offsite” attractions that will welcome huge crowds beginning tomorrow.

I took one final long walk through the Gaslamp Quarter and around the San Diego Convention Center this afternoon to see what I might see..

Barriers are being set up on Fifth Avenue just north of the convention center. This section of street will be cosplay central beginning tomorrow!

Someone attached a memory from last year to the Tin Fish restaurant sign. This is where the SDCC Shrine was located during the two years Comic-Con was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

An offsite by the Omni hotel is setting up. Looks pretty crazy at the moment.

And just down the walkway, Bob’s Burgers was setting up their Comic-Con activation.

Getting the Sanctum Sanctorum ready! A small offsite promotes the recent movie Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

The hotel shuttle buses this year all have Amazon Prime Video wraps on them. This one promotes Invincible.

A helpful smile and an answer awaits!

A little detail work to ready the big FX offsite.

All sorts of graphics are now up at ABC’s Abbott Elementary offsite.

Oh, look! That is this year’s Adult Swim on the Green.

I’ll keep it a mystery.

Workers were putting up big graphics on the IMDboat.

Yikes!

Getting the Voodoo Ranger IPA “pirate ship” ready!

The Gray Man offsite is ready, just waiting for the big crowds tomorrow. I was told the race/obstacle course itself is relatively short. But once inside it’s definitely cool looking!

The Audible sand artists are running out of time!

A big smiling Franklin Armstrong has appeared on the windows of the Peanuts offsite.

A long banner has been added to the MLK Promenade side of the House of the Dragon.

And the front of the castle is beyond awesome. Look at those doors!

Getting the Dungeons & Dragons tavern ready. They better hurry up!
