Photos of pop culture character street art!

During my walks around San Diego over the years, I’ve photographed all sorts of pop culture characters depicted in street art. The cool artwork has appeared on walls as murals and on sidewalk electrical boxes.

I’ve stumbled upon characters from comic books, manga, movies, television shows and even video games. Can you name all of them?

With Comic-Con now just ten days away, I thought I’d have fun and post some of these old photographs again!

If you want to see a lot more of this street art, and read additional information about the above photos, here are the related blog posts to check out…

More cool stuff appears for 2019 Comic-Con!

Interesting buildings are popping up as Amazon's offsite is built a couple weeks before 2019 San Diego Comic-Con.

Twelve days until 2019 San Diego Comic-Con!

I walked around the Gaslamp Quarter, East Village and other parts of downtown both this morning and this afternoon. I noticed that more cool stuff is beginning to appear for SDCC 2019!

The most notable thing I spotted is construction of Amazon’s huge offsite, which is located in the same place where the Jack Ryan Experience was last year. This year Amazon will be promoting their shows The Expanse, Carnival Row and The Boys. I’ll keep walking past this offsite construction in the days ahead, plus I’ll continue looking for other new Comic-Con developments!

UPDATE!

Here’s a photo taken on Tuesday, July 9 at Amazon’s big Comic-Con offsite. Looks like a science fiction setting–perhaps for The Expanse…

UPDATE!

I took the following photo on Friday, July 12, only five day to go until Comic-Con. It appears they were working to complete the top level of the tower, which I’m assuming from its colorful appearance will promote Carnival Row.

Take a ride on the Comic-Con Infinity Train!

Check it out! A very unique trolley has debuted for 2019 San Diego Comic-Con!

The Infinity Train trolley, which promotes an upcoming animated show on Cartoon Network, is decorated with graphics on both the outside AND inside!

According to Wikipedia: “Infinity Train is an upcoming American animated series created by former Regular Show writer/storyboard artist Owen Dennis for Cartoon Network. The series follows 12-year-old Tulip and her two-in-one robot companion One-One in their journey through a seemingly infinite train with limitless possibilities traveling through a completely barren wasteland. They are joined by Atticus, an intelligent, talking Corgi and king of a Corgi kingdom in one of the train’s cars, as they search for a way to Tulip’s home.”

Today I stepped into that fantastic world of infinite possibility and took a ride on San Diego’s cool version of the Infinity Train!

Syfy’s wonderfully nerdy 2019 San Diego Comic-Con trolleys have begun to appear!

Like the past couple years, the Syfy trolley wrap I spotted this morning pays tribute to the fans of popular culture with an assortment of witty phrases!

Looking skyward inside Smart Corner.

Today I sat on a bench waiting for a trolley at the City College station. This unique trolley station is located in the middle of a two tower condo building called Smart Corner.

Suddenly I had to yawn deeply. I tilted my head way back. Above me, the complex pattern of windows, jagged shadows and reflections appeared unreal!

Right then I knew I had to take a few photos.

Here I am, looking “skyward” while sitting inside Smart Corner!

Stumptown trolley appears for 2019 Comic-Con!

Look what I just managed to photograph this morning! A new trolley wrap has appeared for 2019 San Diego Comic-Con!

This cool design promotes Stumptown, an upcoming television crime drama on ABC starring Cobie Smulders. From what I’ve read, the show will be based on the comic book limited series written by Greg Rucka with art by Matthew Southworth.

Avengers: Endgame banners appear in Gaslamp!

2019 Comic-Con is about a month away and cool banners celebrating the 50th Anniversary of San Diego Comic-Con have suddenly appeared in the Gaslamp Quarter!

The streetlamp banners feature popular Marvel characters from the recent blockbuster movie Avengers: Endgame!

This morning I spotted Captain America, Hulk, Black Widow and Iron Man!

UPDATE!

After work I had more time to walk around downtown and the Gaslamp Quarter. And I found more Marvel Avengers banners!

One banner depicts Thor. The other is a twist on what might be the most powerful words in Avengers: Endgame. WE LOVE YOU 3000.

Beautiful complexity at La Jolla’s Athenaeum.

Some amazing art is currently on display at the Athenaeum Music and Arts Library in La Jolla.

My favorite pieces in the Athenaeum’s 2018 San Diego Art Prize exhibition are by nationally renowned local sculptor Anne Mudge. Her stainless steel wire mobiles radiate a strangely organic quality that captivates the eye. As the pieces slowly rotate, casting mysterious shadows on the gallery walls, the complex, silvery structures dance through space and time.

I took some close photos, hoping to capture a fraction of the beautiful complexity.
