A happy skeleton couple (and their dog) have been partying day and night on a street corner in Barrio Logan. Perhaps you’ve seen them, drinks in hand, having a good time, on the side of a building at Logan Avenue and Sampson Street!
I spied this mural for the first time a few days ago during a Barrio Logan walk. According to the spray painted signature, the mural was designed by Diego Romo and painted by Dent Angeles (@dentloktattooarts) earlier this year.

Five years ago, during the month of December, San Diego experienced several festive holiday events, including December Nights, a briefly resurgent Christmas on the Prado, and fun activities around the Holiday Bowl.
I took photographs of these events and shared them here on Cool San Diego Sights!
I also took a variety of walks around San Diego. You might recall photos of some surprising artwork, including a 180 ton teddy bear made of boulders! And I captured the beauty of sunrise at the South Bay Salt Works!

A cracked stone stands in Encinitas, enfolded by a rock wall whose ends appear unfinished. Those who walk past might pause and wonder.
The vertical stone seems timeless–like an ancient monolith.
When I first saw this unusual monument near the intersection of Encinitas Boulevard and Vulcan Avenue, I wondered what it might be.
Plaques near the standing stone explained this was a Veterans Memorial, established by the City of Encinitas, dedicated on December 7, 2003. It soon will be National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, when this memorial will be twenty years old.
I took photographs of the Veterans Memorial, then sought more information. I found this blog that transcribes the various plaques, one of which I didn’t observe during my walk. It reads:
These memorial walls are meant to be reminiscent of ancient walls, the shapes referring to “the waving flag.” Both ends of the large memorial wall are left unfinished, representing the unfinished lives of those who have perished in the line of duty. The large monolithic stone water feature within the memorial, trickles water slowly as tears, speaking back to those who mourn.
The ultimate goal in the design of this memorial wall is to offer a sense of quiet sympathy to the visitor, reminding those of us who take so much for granted, just how much others have given in protecting our freedoms.

I was interested to learn the artist’s vision was made real by landscape architects Schmidt Design Group. They’ve created dozens of outdoor projects around San Diego over the years. Their redesigned Children’s Park in downtown San Diego opened a couple weeks ago.

San Diego has a new cultural center in City Heights. Columbus Hall, located at 4425 Home Avenue, has recently become a destination where artists and lovers of art can gather.
A sculpture installation around the Columbus Club of San Diego‘s building opened last week. It’s titled Beyond the Anthropocene.
Beyond the Anthropocene is a three-dimensional, sculptural collection that asks each artist to project their idea about “what is next.” Three of the pieces are new. Others were previously located in the sculpture garden that used to be along University Avenue just east of Interstate 15. (You can see blog posts about that past sculpture garden here and here.)
Local artist Jim Bliesner is the curator of Beyond the Anthropocene. The other contributing artists are Karl Gindelberger, Tarrah Aroonsakool, Spenser Little, Marcus Montes, Lionel Delevingne, Dianne Brunner, Randy Lane and Iain Gunn.
Drive down Home Avenue just east of Fairmount and you’ll notice several of the pieces beside Columbus Hall. The extraordinary wire art hanging against the building will undoubtedly catch your eye!
During my visit yesterday, I noted that there was a food truck and picnic table nearby for hungry visitors.

Students from Jefferson Elementary School in North Park have painted several outdoor murals that concern human kindness. They decorate a boarded-up vacant building at the corner of University Avenue and 30th Street.
The colorful artwork was created by kids attending kindergarten through fifth grade.
I spied these murals yesterday as I returned from City Heights, where I visited a new cultural center, which I will blog about shortly.

A mural has been painted in downtown San Diego that honors and remembers Padres owner Peter Seidler, who passed away earlier this week.
Peter Seidler will be missed by many. He was a friend to all of San Diego.
The mural, on the north wall of the Copley Building at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, was created by the artists of Ground Floor Murals. You’ve possibly seen their other Padres murals around San Diego.

I spotted this awesome new mural yesterday during a walk in downtown San Diego. It’s painted on a wall by the small parking lot on India Street north of A Street.
The colorful artwork appears to celebrate San Diego’s Columbia District, with musical notes from the nearby Music Box, a train (Santa Fe Depot), a cruise ship and distinctive Emerald Plaza. But I’m not certain. Because I also see an image of Balboa Park’s distant California Tower and part of the Padres logo.
I searched for an artist signature but found none.
Does anybody reading my blog know who created this great mural? Is it a work in progress? There’s a difficult-to-reach section on the right end of the wall that is blank.
If I learn more I’ll provide an update.
UPDATE!
I’ve learned the mural is by international artist and downtown San Diego resident David Feucht. It was finished just recently.

Are those Christmas ornaments hanging from the trees in San Diego’s Civic Center Plaza? No! They are pom poms made of yarn!
The Pompom Project has decorated the Civic Center with many bright spheres of color. Artist Katie Ruiz and the Institute of Contemporary Art San Diego produced this cool installation with the help of the people of San Diego. A goal is to bring strangers together in our community.
This public art is a part of Creative City, a cultural planning project of the City of San Diego.

Does anybody out there know anything about this new mural? It has been painted on one of the Research and Development District (RaDD) buildings now under construction on San Diego’s Embarcadero.
I noticed the unique mural today during my morning walk near Broadway and Harbor Drive. I took zoom photographs from a distance.
The floral artwork appears to open out of the glassy building like a book or document with many pages. The effect is very cool!
I’m not sure whether it’s finished yet.
