Clairemont Town Council is for the birds!

The Clairemont Town Council is for the birds . . . in a good way!

This fun street art can be found in Clairemont on electrical boxes at the intersection of Balboa Arms Drive and Mt. Abernathy Avenue. Painted seagulls are shown lounging at the beach, boating, biking, and otherwise enjoying the Southern California lifestyle!

As I looked at this art, I noticed it contains an emblem indicating it’s a project of the Clairemont Town Council.

This web page describes how the Clairemont Town Council Foundation has a Public Art Program, which includes the painting of transformer boxes in San Diego City Council District 2.

One of CTC Foundation’s aims is to encourage the development of vibrant residential communities. This particular neighborhood behind a shopping mall features many apartment complexes and, I’m sure, residents who smile at humorous street art!

Bounty hunter Boba Fett surfs in Leucadia!

Feared throughout a galaxy far, far away, relentless bounty hunter Boba Fett has mysteriously arrived on planet Earth and has been spotted surfing in Leucadia!

Perhaps Boba came in search of another boba, because there Boba is, now bonded with his boba and board in a BOBA BY THE BEACH mural!

This cool Star Wars mural is painted at Sip-N-Sea: Coffee + Açaí. The artist signature is @JM47ART.

Thought you’d enjoy it!

Do or donut. There is no try!

A little Star Wars wisdom on this May the Fourth: Do or donut. There is no try!

I was loathe to attack Yoda with my teeth, but–ah–how sweet! Perhaps I’m on the Dark Side.

My friends at the Donut Bar in downtown San Diego made these fun edible creations for May the Fourth!

Yum. Darth Vader isn’t so bad after all!

The Grinch invades San Diego at December Nights!

The grumpy, grouchy, grievous green Grinch has invaded San Diego this weekend during December Nights!

Happy people beware! I spotted the Grinch all over the place as I walked around Balboa Park during San Diego’s epic holiday event!

Several cynical Grinches view visitors to December Nights from a vendor’s booth.

Once again, the Grinch is trying to steal Christmas at the Old Globe theatre! He seems very persistent.

Oh, my! The Grinch is peering over the Old Globe’s gift shop!

Thank goodness! That’s just a watercolor painting by Spanish Village artist Gabriel Stockton!

Now a grinning green Grinch has invaded the Festival of Trees inside the Casa del Prado!

The sneaky Grinch has managed to hide inside a Christmas tree!

No Grinch hiding here that I can find.

The Grinch wouldn’t dare hang out around this big, happy Santa bear at the Japanese Friendship Garden!

Does the Grinch work for the City of San Diego? Once again, San Diego’s Community Christmas Tree in Balboa Park has been completely ignored or forgotten.

There’s so much joy and happiness at December Nights, I can’t imagine the Grinch would linger here.

Santa Claus at the International Cottages is working on expanding his jolly belly.

These merry Santa helpers are ready to fend off the Grinch with their sticks.

My heart skipped a beat when I thought this was a green Grinch. It’s actually a happy Christmas tree!

Happy Holidays in Balboa Park!

Don’t look so worried, Santa. I think you’re safe.

Oh, no!

An insane Halloween display in San Diego!

This front yard Halloween display has no equal in San Diego!

A wonderfully insane scene erected beside a sidewalk greets those passing through Serra Mesa. If you’ve driven down Murray Ridge Road, you’ve probably seen it.

This particular front yard has a history of immense displays that are jammed full of characters. The hand made figures are grimly humorous and madly inventive. The popular culture is often referenced, the San Diego Padres are rooted on, and our military is saluted. There’s politics mixed in too with a good helping of sarcasm.

Seeing all the bloody mayhem, one might develop goosebumps, or cringe, or laugh!

I’ve briefly spotted these crazy displays in years past. Because Halloween is approaching, I wanted a close look.

Gerardo Meza street art in Hillcrest and Bankers Hill!

The distinctive street art of Gerardo Meza (@mezarte) has been showing up in both Hillcrest and Bankers Hill!

I’ve noticed several electrical boxes painted in the last year in the two neighborhoods by the prolific artist. His colorful street art can be observed in communities all around San Diego.

Should you walk through San Ysidro just north of the Mexican border, you’ll find many examples of his work. Gerardo Meza is Chairman of the Border Public Arts Committee. Among other accomplishments, he’s also Coordinator of Art Box San Diego and Cofounder of the San Diego Art Society.

Gerardo’s artwork with its Mexican flavor is unmistakable. It can be weird, distorted, humorous, frightening, sexy, hip, mythological, ironic… It’s very original and definitely attracts your attention!

My first four photographs are of two boxes in Hillcrest…

And here come photos of two boxes in Bankers Hill…

A fun Abbott Elementary trolley for Comic-Con!

The third trolley wrap to appear in San Diego for Comic-Con 2024 promotes the ABC television series Abbott Elementary. And you can’t possibly miss it!

The fun circus graphics refer to the Abbott Elementary A.V.A. Fest (or A Very Abbott Festival), which originated in a classic episode in the show’s second season.

Critically acclaimed through its first three seasons, Abbott Elementary has been renewed for a fourth season. The humorous interactions of its well-rounded characters has kept the good-natured sitcom fresh and enjoyable!

Check out these photos taken today, about a month before the start of San Diego Comic-Con.

Excited yet?

Sea monsters invade the Mile of Cars!

Several terrifying sea monsters have been observed invading the Mile of Cars in National City! A menacing octopus, a very toothy fish, and the Creature from the Black Lagoon have gathered next to Perry Ford!

I saw this fun street art during a long walk through National City this morning. My objective was to photograph the new Historic California US 101 Route street signs that were recently erected along National City Boulevard. (That post will be coming up shortly.)

Between my walks in National City and Balboa Park, I ended up taking lots of photos today!

Stay tuned!

Crazy ski competition in Balboa Park!

Balboa Park was the peculiar venue for a big ski competition today!

Who needs snow when the House of Finland holds its annual lawn program at the International Cottages and provides skis? Grass works fine!

The afternoon Hiihtokilpailu (which is Finnish for ski competition) saw several teams (four athletes each, sharing two long skis) racing cross-country style (without ski poles). I watched the crazy spectacle.

One team couldn’t get out of the starting gate, two had calamitous, spontaneous collapses, and the fourth had major trouble turning around. One machine-like team named the Engineers would go on to win the big Final. (Fortunately, all contestants were awarded cookies.)

These photos of the silly “skiing” contest might make you chuckle.

I probably would’ve fallen over, too!

Deadpool from Chile visits Balboa Park!

Deadpool has traveled from Chile in South America to San Diego, and I found him hanging out today in Balboa Park!

This young man with the cool Deadpool cosplay, posing for photographs on El Prado, didn’t speak much English. But I did ascertain he loves the Deadpool movies.

I don’t know if he’s in pursuit of any supervillains at the moment. Perhaps his buddy Wolverine was nearby, but I didn’t see him.

You never know what or who you’ll encounter in wonderful Balboa Park!

If you’re reading this on a serious San Diego newsfeed, sorry. I’m just a blogger who likes to walk around the city, and sometimes I post silly, fun things.

Perhaps you’ll enjoy a quick smile before returning to a world where depressing news is far too common.
