This cool new pedestrian bridge spans Harbor Drive between the San Diego Convention Center and Petco Park.
The unique suspension bridge took longer to build than anticipated. According to media reports I saw, the firm that designed it originally miscalculated how much weight it could hold!
Here are a few more pics!

Check out these photographs! I captured these three amazing images early this morning. Sunrises over San Diego are often beautiful, but today the brightly painted clouds were absolutely stunning!

Just for fun, here are a couple more photos! I took these in March of 2015…

Roof of Broadway Pier’s beautiful Port Pavilion and clouds in blue sky.
I really like the above photo. That’s the rooftop of the relatively new Port Pavilion at San Diego’s Broadway Pier. I got this colorful pic while standing to the south on nearby Navy Pier.
Until recently the Broadway Pier was a bit barren. Years ago I remember a small two-level observation structure in the middle, with some potted trees arranged about it.
The pier itself was built in 1919. It has been used by the Navy, the local fishing fleet, and even the royal yacht Britannia during a visit in 1983 by Queen Elizabeth. Today the pavilion accommodates special events and cruise ships.

This second photo puts that rooftop in context. What a gorgeous December day!
Here comes a third pic taken on a summer day. The silvery stainless steel artwork on the building’s facade was created by internationally renowned artist and lighting designer Leni Schwendinger. It’s called Tidal Radiance.
The shining public art appears like sunlight reflected from rippling water. It also lights up at night.

Here’s another pic taken on a later day just for fun…
Water, pier piles, harbor cruise boat and the beautiful pavilion.
And, finally, two more! The last photo, taken in early October 2014, shows colorful umbrellas and tables recently added near the foot of the Broadway Pier.
Very nice!

Several weeks ago a cool new small shopping center opened up adjacent to Seaport Village on downtown San Diego’s waterfront. It’s called The Headquarters at Seaport District, and it’s located in the old police headquarters.
I remember visiting the San Diego Police headquarters here back in the early eighties, before it moved. For a couple decades these historic and beautiful buildings sat empty and unused. I’m glad that they’ve finally been restored!

Across Harbor Drive to the north you can find an interesting historical marker. First established as an Army supply depot, this was the location of the San Diego Barracks from 1850 to 1921.
A farmers market is held on Sundays at The Headquarters.
I took the above photo on a sunny Sunday afternoon!
It must be the holiday season, because the Fantasy on Ice skating rink has been erected in front of Horton Plaza here in downtown San Diego. I got some pics of carefree people gliding through the sunshine. I snapped this photo while standing right next to the NBC building, at Third Avenue and Broadway. You can see the Balboa Theatre in the background.

Check out this cool public art! A series of beautiful, detailed scenes from San Diego history decorate ten columns just north of downtown’s Santa Fe Depot, where they can be viewed by trolley riders as they head toward Little Italy. The handmade tiles which form the exquisite sculptural mosaics were pieced together by Betsy K. Schulz in 2008. Located on the west side of downtown’s Sapphire Tower residential condominium, the artwork is titled The Tracks We Leave Behind.
As one proceeds north one moves forward through time, from the earliest days of San Diego right up to the present day. I sorted these photos in such a way that you move backward into the past…

People dine where scenes from Top Gun were filmed.
Walking through downtown San Diego recently, I happened to pass Kansas City Barbeque, so I got some pics.
Do you remember the hit movie Top Gun? The 80’s movie about Navy fighter pilots that turned Tom Cruise into a mega-superstar? You might recall the great sleazy bar scene, where Maverick and Goose sit at a piano and sing “Great Balls of Fire”. That was shot at this location! You might also remember the line spoken by Meg Ryan, “Goose, you big stud! Take me to bed now or lose me forever!” That was filmed in the dining area. The bar also appears at the end of the movie as “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’” is heard playing on the jukebox.
Today you can eat some tasty barbeque while checking out a huge collection of memorabilia, a virtual shrine to Top Gun.

Here’s another batch of photos from yesterday evening’s cool Zombie Walk. The downtown San Diego event began at Childrens Park and proceeded down Martin Luther King Jr. Promenade. As it grew dark, the hungry creatures swarmed up Fifth Avenue through the Gaslamp, where the spectacle entertained Saturday night revelers.
Oh my goodness, here they come now! Teletubby zombies lead the frightening assault!
Yikes! There are hundreds of hungry zombies shuffling along! They’re unstoppable! Seeping blood and torn clothing seem to be the main theme.
I hope the humans over in the Gaslamp are ready to take on more than zombies. I see a werewolf!
Dilbert thought his coworkers were mindless zombies. Then one day Dilbert became one.
The walking dead include a bloody Superman. If the Man of Steel couldn’t stop the zombie plague, then I guess there’s no hope.
Another zombie with an axe searching for a victim…
Hoardes of walking dead are now very close to San Diego’s Gaslamp. It’s not going to be pretty.
Well, I guess the zombies aren’t hungry for the red sauce served at the Spaghetti Factory. They’re after something else! Bye–gotta run!
I happened to be at the Smart Corner building, the location of the City College trolley station, when a historic car belonging to the Silver Line came through! It was servicing the downtown loop.
This shiny, beautifully restored Presidents Conference Committee (PCC) trolley car was built just after the end of World War II. A whole fleet of electric trolleys like this one traversed San Diego until 1949.
Here are more pics of the same trolley taken on different days:
