Crazy creative fun outside Comic-Con 2024!

It might seem like chaos. It is certainly a bit crazy. It’s what happens when thousands of creative, fun-loving people gather together all at once and have a big party. That’s what it’s like in downtown San Diego outside the convention center during San Diego Comic-Con!

There is cosplay–costume play–everywhere you turn. There are new movies, television shows, video games and more to explore with fun activations. There are new discoveries around every corner. There’s just a big crush of humanity, and everyone is smiling and having a good time. Adults can be a kid again and not worry what others think. Kids can dream and see the possibilities of human creativity.

I took loads of photos today. I’ve got lots of blog posts coming up, so stay tuned! But first let me share a bunch of semi-random shots taken today (Thursday) that give you a taste of the wonderfulness of Comic-Con 2024.

I promised to mention the smiling group that’s in the the next photo. They were out and about promoting Quirkies, which offers all sorts of cool merch. Thank you for the refrigerator magnets!

If you see this Rick and Morty truck, walk up to the passenger window and you’ll probably get a cool pin!

Pirates, cosplay, and San Diego Comic-Con fun!

The crazy good times at Comic-Con 2024 in San Diego have begun!

I took one final walk late this afternoon, a couple hours before the San Diego Convention Center would open its doors for Preview Night. And what did my camera capture?

Fun people! Creative activities! Cool sights in every conceivable direction!

And Comic-Con hasn’t even begun in earnest! I can’t wait for tomorrow!

Reporter for IGN prepares to go on camera in San Diego’s Gaslamp during Comic-Con 2024.

IT’SUGAR candy store in the Gaslamp has exclusive tokidoki merch for sale.

Crowds are growing in the Gaslamp near the San Diego Convention Center on the afternoon of Comic-Con Preview Night.

Dragon Tamer cosplay!

Batman nemesis Penguin has brought his Gotham Ice truck to San Diego. Uh, oh!

Banners on Harbor Drive indicate Heroes At Work.

Have a question about Comic-Con? Ask this friendly guy!

Here comes Tinker Bell!

Do you dare enter the Adult Swim Pirate Parrrty offsite? You have to pass through this gigantic skull!

It’s a pirate parrrty! And one heck of a big nose ring!

These pirates seem awfully civilized. What are they really up to?

These guys can spell A.V.A. FEST. They get a passing grade.

Rocky Balboa and Apollo Creed cosplay! Very cool!

Fans are already exploring the Dragon Ball offsite.

Here’s the end of the line for Dragon Ball exclusives, I believe.

Hot Wheels is back again with their cool truck!

However, the Sharpie truck is stuck in Harbor Drive traffic.

Looking for a restroom? Watch for this sign!

Part of the Bathroom Battlestation under construction. Looks like he needs a laxative.

Cool artwork by a local artist along MLK Promenade.

I’m now back to Fifth Avenue looking at the Omni Hotel’s big FOX Animation Domination building wrap.

My goodness! These Borderlands Psychos seem to be everywhere!

I’ve seen this caricature artist in Balboa Park.

Gambit cosplay!

Batgirl cosplay!

Horde of Psychos invade San Diego’s Gaslamp!

A horde of insane, terrifying Psychos was observed prowling about San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter today. The bandits, arriving from the Borderlands, meandered about Fifth Avenue, startling innocent civilians who merely wanted to have a good time at Comic-Con 2024.

I suppose this gang of Psychos thought the Vault must be located somewhere in the Gaslamp Quarter. I’m not sure how they hoped to find it, however. They didn’t appear too bright.

One approached me and I thought of running for dear life. But when it asked whether I was its mother, I could only feel sorry for the poor bandit.

Of course, these guys were out during Comic-Con promoting the upcoming movie Borderlands. And they were handing out Entertainment Weekly Comic-Con Special Issue magazines, too!

Timeless: an iconic lowrider in San Diego!

Ready to have your mind blown? Take a look at these photographs!

This lowrider is named Timeless. It was on display today in San Diego during the Day at the Bay 2024 car show.

I saw dozens of amazing cars as I walked about the show, but I had to stop in my tracks when I spotted Timeless. It’s beyond incredible!

According to one sign, Timeless is an original lowrider first built in the 1970s whose multiple modifications and endless paint jobs have kept it relevant for more than 40 years. This work of art, with a local and national reputation, is said to be the most iconic lowrider in San Diego. It was built from a 1964 Riviera.

Timeless is a fantastic dream come true.

Look at the crazy interior! How would you like to take a ride in this?

Crazy ski competition in Balboa Park!

Balboa Park was the peculiar venue for a big ski competition today!

Who needs snow when the House of Finland holds its annual lawn program at the International Cottages and provides skis? Grass works fine!

The afternoon Hiihtokilpailu (which is Finnish for ski competition) saw several teams (four athletes each, sharing two long skis) racing cross-country style (without ski poles). I watched the crazy spectacle.

One team couldn’t get out of the starting gate, two had calamitous, spontaneous collapses, and the fourth had major trouble turning around. One machine-like team named the Engineers would go on to win the big Final. (Fortunately, all contestants were awarded cookies.)

These photos of the silly “skiing” contest might make you chuckle.

I probably would’ve fallen over, too!

Brave people confront danger in La Jolla!

Yesterday a group of unsuspecting people confronted imminent danger at UC San Diego in La Jolla!

The large group could not know the sort of peril they’d be facing. We had gathered in Revelle Plaza to witness a performance by Cirque Inextremiste, but many didn’t realize that WE would be the performers!

Yann Ecauvre appeared and proceeded to drag long, very heavy wooden beams out to the surrounding audience. He stood the beams on end and then had ordinary hands (some of which were rather small) hold them upright. When unsteady beams began to precariously tip, the danger was safely overcome. Whew!

Then audience members began to build a wooden structure made of more beams. Higher and increasingly impressive the construct grew . . . those vertically held beams were added . . . then a chain of courageous humans holding hands mounted the crazy, tipsy structure!

The performance was called Damoclès. It was part of this weekend’s free La Jolla Playhouse 2024 WOW event!

Would you like to bring out your own courage? Damoclès will be repeated this afternoon. See the 2024 Without Walls Festival schedule by clicking here!

(By the way–were you there? That was me, surprised, given a yellow danger tape necktie, and helping to hold up the second beam. Taking photos during the ordeal was a challenge!)

These kids were fearless!

The most magical day in San Diego!

I’m sure many would concur. Saturday during Comic-Con is the most magical day of the year in San Diego.

It’s definitely one of the craziest, must surreal and weirdly wonderful days!

In the afternoon and into the evening the crowds grow and become ever more colorful. Strange worlds of imagination–perhaps summoned by magic–fill the streets and sidewalks of San Diego.

Comic-Con craziness is back in full gear!

Look at these photographs! I took them this Friday afternoon! It’s obvious that the usual craziness outside Comic-Con is back in full gear! And it’s not even Saturday–typically the wildest day of all!

In 2020 and 2021 Comic-Con was cancelled due to the COVID pandemic. In 2022 lingering worries about the pandemic reduced the crowds noticeably. But look at 2023! Even while the writers and actors in Hollywood are on strike, it’s apparent that the love for Comic-Con and all that it represents is as strong as ever. Stronger, perhaps?

I saw a passion for creativity and good-natured fun. I saw dreams made real. I saw sudden smiles and many people coming together.

A big, crazy San Diego party begins!

Here we go! One of the biggest parties in San Diego has begun! It’s Preview Night for Comic-Con 2023. For the next four days massive crowds will descend upon downtown San Diego to celebrate popular culture!

Late this afternoon vendors and fans were converging on the San Diego Convention Center. The exhibit floor opens at 6 pm. Those with Preview Night tickets will be able to get an idea of the cool stuff they will see when Comic-Con begins in earnest tomorrow.

Meanwhile, areas around the convention center and the Gaslamp Quarter were nearly ready for the big crazy party. A few pop-ups and offsite activations are being readied at the last minute. A huge line of people was waiting to enter the Dragon Ball offsite near the Marriott Marina. The Lodge offsite by Paramount was already open, too.

Many members of the media have arrived on the scene, too, as Comic-Con 2023 will receive international coverage.

Enjoy some fun photographs from a mid-afternoon walk!

Craziness downtown on Padres Opening Day!

Is Opening Day for the San Diego Padres crazier and more exciting this year than ever?

Check out these photos and tell me what you think!

Look at the huge crowds that were already lined up outside Petco Park a couple hours before the season’s first baseball game would begin!

The atmosphere around the ballpark and in the Gaslamp is electric. Very, very big things are expected of the Padres in 2023!

Go Pads!
