More colorful street art in Pacific Beach!

Today is Free Comic Book Day!

Before heading up to Southern California Comics in Kearny Mesa for their big event, I enjoyed a random walk around Pacific Beach, my eyes searching for street art I haven’t photographed before.

Street art–any art that is seen while heading down the street (as I define it)–is often very similar to art you’ll find in a comic book. It’s usually bold, colorful, impactful and memorable. Whether it’s on a wall, sidewalk utility box, above a door or in a window, it’s art that quickly grabs and engages attention!

These images represent my walk a short distance north on Ingraham Street, then west along Garnet Avenue nearly to Mission Boulevard. Some of the art is faded and obviously years old. Some appears to be more recent.

Art on the street is ever changing, with a life of its own…

Four cool new murals in San Ysidro!

I spotted four cool new murals today in San Ysidro!

My last walk through this border community was back in October. I believe the great street art I discovered today was painted since then.

The first three murals decorate fences in San Ysidro’s Cultural Corridor, which is located on Cypress Drive, north of San Ysidro Boulevard and south of the trolley tracks.

First up is one I really like.

If you’re curious about the image, CBX is the Cross Border Xpress pedestrian bridge that connects Tijuana International Airport with a terminal in San Diego…

Next up is a mural with many diverse characters that was painted this year by Yvette Roman (@yvette_roman).

Right beside it is another mural by Yvette Roman…

Finally, here’s a super colorful street mural spray painted on a building’s side and adjacent construction wall. I spotted the artwork on San Ysidro Boulevard a bit west of Cypress Drive…

Fantastic fish on a building in Skyline!

Driving through San Diego’s Skyline neighborhood, have you noticed an enormous, fantastic fish?

I’ve seen this amazing fish mural the past few years while riding the Orange Line trolley. I finally walked over to the corner of Imperial Avenue and 69th Street to have a closer look and take photos.

The abstract fish is by San Diego artist Maxx Moses. You’ve probably seen his wildly creative murals around the city and at several trolley stations. Often cultural, technological, and organic imagery are fused together to create eye-popping art.

You can see other examples of distinctive Maxx Moses work by clicking here.

The Chrome Lady robot of San Diego!

Walking along El Cajon Boulevard after my visit to the Rolando Street Fair last weekend, I noticed a very cool mural painted on the side of a tattoo parlor. I had discovered The Chrome Lady!

The silvery female robot indicated I’d arrived at The Chrome Lady Tattoo.

I asked one of the tattoo artists if he knew who painted the robot, but he wasn’t sure. I didn’t see a signature on the mural.

If you’re ever near the intersection of El Cajon Boulevard and 62nd Street, look for it!

Two cool murals in a Chula Vista alley.

Here’s one last blog post from my long walk in Chula Vista yesterday.

As I wandered down the alley directly west of Third Avenue, I discovered two very cool murals.

The first is north of Davidson Street. There’s a signature, but I’m not sure who the artist is. Leave a comment if you know…

The second mural is south of Davidson Street and is by artist Michelle Ruby, aka Mr. B Baby. You might recognize her artwork. It contains fun, colorful characters that often populate her murals…

More fun murals along Commercial Street!

Commercial Street east of downtown San Diego is an excellent place to spot colorful murals and other fun public art!

Perhaps you’ve already seen the giant robot, the trashy whale, and the fence full of comic book characters.

Yesterday I rode the Orange Line trolley into the Logan Heights neighborhood on a mission. I wanted to photograph more murals on Commercial Street between the 25th Street and 32nd Street trolley stations.

The first mural, which you can see below, depicts famous jazz singer Billie Holiday. This artwork was painted a couple years ago by the Southeast Art Team (@southeastartteam) on their Oya Art Gallery and Boutique building, a bit west of 28th Street.

The next series of murals can be found between 31st and 32nd Street. Read the photo captions…

This cool shoe mural was painted very recently at SD Custom Footwear by @colorsoner713

Colorful bird mural painted in late 2022 by @espy_dpt_znc

Mural painted late 2022 depicting piñata character Chucho and roses by SoCal artist Michelle Ruby (@MrBBaby).

Finally, at the intersection of Commercial Street and 32nd Street, a mural is now being painted on what appears to be a new home for San Diego beer company Little Miss Brewing…

(Spider-Man, Cyclops, Wolverine and other Marvel comic book characters were on this building a few years back.)

UPDATE!

A new mural was painted at a later time to the immediate right of the Michelle Ruby artwork (visible on the far right in the next photo). The new mural is by (@misterhir).

Swinging Friar at Chula Vista’s Vogue Theater!

San Diego Padres mascot the Swinging Friar is hanging out in Chula Vista!

You can find him on a construction wall in front of the historic Vogue Theater, which is now undergoing its big renovation. The Swinging Friar was painted by Ground Floor Murals.

The temporary wall includes other bits of street art, including a couple more images inspired by the San Diego Padres.

Around the corner, a cool Manny Machado mural is painted on the old theater’s north side. See that mural by clicking here.

Go Pads! World Series this season for sure!

Another beautiful face in Normal Heights!

Over the years, several beautiful female faces have been spray painted on this wall in Normal Heights.

The wall is to one side of a tiny parking lot on Adams Avenue, between Adams Avenue Tattoo and the El Zarape restaurant. I noticed the date on this mural is 2022.

Back in 2019, I photographed another face on this same wall. See it here!

Elephant and flower in Mission Beach!

At the end of 2021, some very cool art was being painted on two garage doors in Mission Beach. I happened to see the work in progress during this walk. At the time I knew nothing about the artist.

I walked past these two murals again today and noticed they’re completed! And they’re by San Diego muralist Carly Ealey!

It’s an elephant and flower!

You can see this beautiful artwork just north of Ostend Court on Mission Boulevard.

Huge graffiti mural completed at UC San Diego!

A huge 10,000-square-foot mural has just been completed at UC San Diego! You can’t possibly miss the super colorful artwork on the east side of the UCSD Visual Arts Facility, facing the new Epstein Family Amphitheater.

I spied the giant mural from the San Diego Trolley as it pulled into the UC San Diego Central Campus station. I rapidly jumped off!

A gentleman on a cherry picker informed me the mural is now finished. I couldn’t distinguish his name above the roar of nearby machinery, but this web page explains much about its creation, and how the artwork depicts authentic wild-style and contemporary graffiti styles that are rooted in Southern California, and was developed with the guidance of a committee comprised of Department of Visual Arts faculty and representatives of the campus community...

(The other mural referred to in the article can be found here. A bit of it is visible in the next photo, taken from the elevated trolley station.)

Construction fences limited what I could see. But still, check it out!

UPDATE!

Here are pics of the mural’s right half. I took these during a later visit to UCSD…
