Dog rescuers of San Diego/Baja region save lives!

Fido Fest was held yesterday in Santee’s Town Center Community Park East. Organizations and vendors that support dogs gathered together for the free, very popular event.

I was astonished by the number of organizations present that engage in dog rescue. They came from all around the San Diego and Baja California region. Between them, hundreds of dogs were up for adoption.

Would you like to adopt a dog? Would you like to support those good people who are rescuing dogs and providing them with a loving home?

I walked about Fido Fest and saw many of these good people.

My first photo, above, shows Woofs and Wags Dog Rescue. Their goal is to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome dogs rescued from from San Diego and Baja California. Their website is here.

Labrador Rescuers has been dedicated to the noble cause of rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming Labrador Retrievers for two decades. Their website is here.

Open Arms Rescue, based in Imperial Beach, is giving dogs a new start at a happy life! Their website is here.

Friends Humane Services Tijuana supports street rescues, mass spay and neuter clinics, pet owners with extremely limited resources needing veterinary care for their animals as well as public education programs, adoption programs for rescuers, and a pet food distribution program for animals in need. Chihuahua Rescue of San Diego County is dedicated to rescuing and caring for homeless, abandoned and injured small breed dogs. Their website is here.

San Diego Humane Society needs no introduction. They do much good work. Visit their website here.

Paws 4 Thought Animal Rescue is an all-breed animal rescue organization. They rescue dogs from shelters at risk of being euthanized, as well as abandoned, abused, and stray dogs in both the U.S. and Tijuana/Rosarito areas. Their website is here.

Calexico Border Paws relocate their visiting animals to forever loving homes that match their needs, while avoiding as much euthanization and as possible. Their website is here.

DeTommaso Dogs Rescue aims to save as many animals in need as they can. They rescue animals from the streets of Baja California. They provide medical care, food, shelter, and rehome dogs. Their Instagram is here.

Southern California Golden Retriever Rescue is the third largest Golden Retriever Rescue in the country, finding homes for over 300 dogs annually. Their website is here.

Ruger’s Rescues is for those individuals and families up and down the state (and even in other states) that found that special dog, but are unable to get to the shelter in time or transport them home. Their website is here.

Rescue Fenix is an all volunteer all breed rescue mobilized by the feeling of compassion for animal welfare: those animals who are in danger, sick, abused and neglect. Their website is here.

Leonberger Rescue Pals is an all volunteer national organization dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and re-homing of unwanted, abandoned or abused Leonbergers and Leonberger mixes. Their website is here.

Labradors and Friends Dog Rescue‘s mission is to help save the lives of homeless Labradors, Labrador-mixes, and Labrador “friends” from kill-shelters in California and across the southwest. Their website is here.

Checking out the Wienermobile in Santee!

The Oscar Mayer Wienermobile was in Santee today for Fido Fest! The iconic vehicle attracted lots of curious people, who could even enjoy a peek inside!

I took photos!

The two smiling drivers (hotdoggers) were greeting everybody and passing out hotdog whistles. Several signs on the grass nearby provided information about the Wienermobile. I learned there are six wieners-on-wheels that travel around the country.

Let’s see . . .

The Wienermobile weighs the same as 140,500 hot dogs. It has a hot dog shaped dashboard. It has a ketchup walkway and condiment splattered carpet. The bunroof is removable. It has an official Wiener Jingle horn…

Also, Carl Mayer, nephew of Oscar Mayer, designed the first Wienermobile in 1936…

I had a fast look inside. Looks quite comfortable!

Community celebrated at Santee Street Fair!

The big 2025 Santee Street Fair was held today! Thousands of happy people came together at Santee Town Center to celebrate the start of summer! It’s Memorial Day weekend!

From entertainment on the main stage . . . to plenty of food . . . to carnival rides for the kids . . . to community organizations and vendors . . . there was plenty to see and do!

I walked around taking in the atmosphere while meeting some friendly people.

As I arrived, cheerleaders from Santana High School were performing for the gathered crowd…

As the next photograph suggests, this is one of the most popular street festivals in San Diego County!

Some of the cool rides in the fun zone…

I learned about animal sanctuary Lions Tigers and Bears in Alpine. I often see them on the TV news. It’s a place I have yet to visit.

Viola makes yummy cookies and other treats. She once was interviewed on CBS News 8!

The City of Santee was well represented at the street fair.

Santee offers many public activities for residents, including families and seniors. The Santee Summer Concerts are coming up!

Somebody spun a prize wheel and won!

The San Diego County Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) trains you to protect yourself, your family, your neighbors and neighborhood in an emergency situation.

I got an emergency kit that includes a Safety Lightstick, which I’ve placed within easy reach in case my power goes out.

These smiling folks were full of information about Santee Lakes Recreation Preserve. If you like freshwater fishing, that would be a great place!

Food galore at the Santee Street Fair!

Mr. Fun smiled for my camera, and probably wondered who the heck I was.

Grama Rose hosts a radio show, which always includes heart, wisdom and a recipe!

American Legion Riders had some wheels near their canopy.

I coaxed a smile out of this VFW gent!

An honest-to-goodness chimney sweep! Did he fly in to Santee from London?

A brilliant karate demonstration receives oohs and aahs from a large audience!

The Santee Food Bank needs your help!

Copper Line trolley gets ready to open!

A new line of the San Diego Trolley is set to open tomorrow–Sunday, September 29th!

The Copper Line will run from the El Cajon Transit Center to the Santee Town Center trolley station, taking over a short stretch of the present Green Line. The change is being made by MTS to provide better, more reliable service.

I happened to be walking through downtown San Diego’s Gaslamp trolley station this morning when I spied these workers replacing some signs. The old signs on this side of the tracks indicated To Santee. The new signs tell passengers the Green Line will now end at El Cajon!

A big smile appeared for my camera! The San Diego Trolley is number one!

Santee plaque and trail honors U.S. Marines.

A bronze plaque in Town Center Community Park in Santee honors local U.S. Marines. The plaque stands behind an outdoor performance stage near a flagpole, and points the way to the Marine Memorial Trail, which runs around the perimeter of the public park.

I photographed the plaque a number of weeks ago during an event in Santee promoting San Diego FC’s inaugural soccer season in 2025. As you can see in these pictures, it was raining that day. Today as I sit here it’s raining, too, and I’m going through old photos.

San Diego FC brings Chrome Ball to Santee!

San Diego’s future MLS soccer team, San Diego FC, brought its Chrome Ball Tour to Santee today!

A huge crowd turned out at the Town Center Park East recreational fields to watch and play in a big multi-team soccer tournament. In addition to the games, there were opportunities to learn about San Diego FC, meet sports fans and enthusiastic booster clubs, obtain team merchandise, and generally have a good time. The party continued even when the rain began!

The fun included the big, shiny Chrome Ball, which features the names of tour cities throughout San Diego County. The Chrome Ball Tour will continue through the end of 2024 and stop in 18 cities! You can see which cities are coming up by clicking here.

As I walked around and spoke to participants, I learned that the Star Wars group 18th Battalion supports San Diego Football Club, and that the Riptides are super passionate fans who also perform community service. And there were others–click here to see many diverse supporters of San Diego FC.

Are you excited that Major League Soccer is coming to San Diego? I absolutely saw that many people are!

A green February walk at Mission Trails.

Today was the perfect day for a walk at Mission Trails Regional Park.

It’s February. The sun was out . . . a pleasant breeze . . . temperature low 70’s.

The trails were almost dry after our recent winter rain. The footing was neither muddy nor dusty.

Best of all: plenty of green!

Most of the year the native vegetation covering San Diego’s undeveloped landscape is dry and drab. But in the spring or after winter storms there’s a transformation. Today, the grass near much of the trail was bright green!

My walk started from the paved Father Junipero Serra Trail at the trailhead south of the Kumeyaay Lake Campground. I headed up the Kwaay Paay East Trail, which skirts private residential property before sharply turning and commencing a fairly steep climb. At a junction with the main Kwaay Paay Peak Trail, I turned back down toward the original trailhead, to complete a loop that’s a little less than one mile long.

I’ve called this a “walk” even through it’s really a wilderness hike. I’d say in places the hike is moderately difficult. You can see in my photos what the trail is like.

Flags, flavor and fun at the Santee Street Fair!

The annual Santee Street Fair returned to East County today!

I rode the San Diego Trolley up to Santee Trolley Square to enjoy an event I hadn’t previously experienced.

The festival began with the presentation of colors, the Pledge of Allegiance, and the singing of the Star Spangled Banner. In addition to youthful dancing and martial arts demonstrations, a Gold Star family took to the main stage. They were thanked for their sacrifice with a standing ovation.

Lots of neighbors came out to enjoy food, fun and fellowship. The kid zone’s rides were whirling. Smiling artists, vendors and community organizations were plentiful. I’ve never seen so many prize wheels!

After a bit, the sun peeked out from the clouds above. And it felt like a perfect Memorial Day weekend had begun!

Monument to historic radio station KCBQ in Santee.

I remember listening to KCBQ 1170 as a youth. For decades it was one of San Diego’s leading radio stations, featuring radio personalities that are legendary, including “Shotgun Tom” Kelly and Charlie Tuna.

This groundbreaking AM radio station has had a complicated history, its many different owners moving the studio about from time to time and playing everything from contemporary music to country music. A detailed Wikipedia article can be found here.

A monument to the original KCBQ, which was influential in popularizing the Top 40 music format for the rest of the nation, now stands at the radio station’s old Santee transmitter site. It was dedicated on August 28, 2010. You can find the monument on Mission Gorge Road just east of Carlton Hills Boulevard, in front of an In-N-Out Burger fast food restaurant.

Scan the list of past on-air personalities and you’ll see names that have been well known in San Diego radio for decades. Personally, I easily recall the unique voices of Frank Anthony, Gene Knight and Gary Kelley, not to mention “Shotgun Tom” Kelly.
