Like a waterfall producing rainbows, Luminous Flux now splashes the Joseph Clayes III Gallery at the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library with color and light!
Luminous Flux is part of a new Athenaeum exhibition titled Anne Labovitz: The Blue Hour. It opened yesterday.
Anne Labovitz, who resides in Minnesota, has created beautiful works of art that connect the viewer with surprising light. The radiated and reflected light inspires awe. Of course, luminosity is abundant in this world, but our eyes at times miss it.
Should you visit the Athenaeum to experience the work of Anne Labovitz, you won’t be disappointed. In addition to Luminous Flux (14′ x 20′ x 5’6″ acrylic on Tyvek), you’ll find tall slender stacks of tiny, many-colored books, and shining, colorful, illuminated windows. You really must see them!
The exhibition Anne Labovitz: The Blue Hour will be on display through January 13, 2024.

One of the most wonderful aspects of Balboa Park is its dynamism. Every day, with every walk, new discoveries come into view.
This evening, as the sun cast lengthening shadows, I wandered about photographing a park that is always in transition, forever new.

San Diego architect Sim Bruce Richards is best known for designing houses that appeal not only to the eyes, but to other human senses as well. The museum exhibit, with its many photographs and drawings, celebrates the unique vision of an architect whose creations feel both rustic and modern. It’s an aesthetic that appeals to an essential human connection with nature.
His houses are truly homes. They are warm and welcoming. They contain natural, textured materials that are pleasant to the senses, like stone, adobe, and beautiful woods, including mahogany, redwood and aromatic cedar. Fireplaces are centerpieces where life gathers. Natural outdoor light shines through large windows. As one display explains: Richards took inspiration from his Cherokee heritage, his apprenticeship with Frank Lloyd Wright, and fondness for the work of San Diegan Irving Gill and other early twentieth century architects…
Reading the fascinating displays, I learned he often collaborated with noted San Diego artist James Hubbell.
Richards also designed commercial and church buildings using the same aesthetic. Did you know the Morley Field Tennis Club building in Balboa Park was one of his projects?
Beautifully inviting furniture that he designed is also part of the exhibit.
The Sensuous Environment – Sim Bruce Richards, Architect presents material from the archives of the San Diego History Center and UC Santa Barbara’s Art, Architecture and Design Museum.

Enjoy a dozen photographs I took late this afternoon, about an hour before sunset.
I started at Broadway Pier and walked east into the heart of downtown San Diego.
I always enjoy this time of day. Light is reflected from many windows, creating a magical effect.
Tall ship Exy Johnson, docked at the Broadway Pier, is visiting San Diego.The buildings of the Research And Development District (RADD) are under construction where much of the old Navy Broadway Complex used to be.Looking north along the Embarcadero. Those clouds are left over from our most recent storm.Walking east down Broadway. Sunlight shines from the silvery Pacific Gate high-rise.More late sunshine on the tops of downtown skyscrapers.West Downtown San Diego is under construction in . . . west downtown San Diego!I love reflections like these.The late afternoon light is beautiful on the Balboa Theatre.The watery dome of the Broadway Fountain shines with different colors like the scales of a fish.A corridor of waning light downtown.Another fine downtown walk.

Our recent winter storms in San Diego thrust small stones high up onto the beach in places. At Torrey Pines State Beach, smooth stones covered much of the pedestrian pathway that runs down to and under the bridge near the north parking lot.
The stones, combined with a high tide and descending sun, made for some silvery photographs this afternoon! Bands of reflected light approached the shore with every crashing wave. Newly wetted stones gleamed like magic.

A spinning Sexy Helix now stands in front of the Oceanside Museum of Art. Those who walk past the curvaceous artwork might be dazzled. The kinetic sculpture casts colorful shards of light in every direction as it turns in the Southern California sunshine!
Sexy Helix was created by artist Deanne Sabeck. The sculpture is part of the museum’s current Legacy: 25 Years of Art and Community exhibition. Visitors pausing at the front entrance can watch the wind spin the sculpture, or give a gentle push with a finger.
Rainbow fragments spill and reflect from the sensuous curve of dichroic glass.

I took these photographs of the Linda Vista Library earlier this year. It’s about time I shared them!
Look at the fascinating architecture of this very unique building. Like many projects that were designed by local architect Rob Wellington Quigley, the geometry one encounters is unexpected and complex.
Eyes wandering over the varied exterior make delightful discoveries. Then you walk through the door into the light filled interior with its many angled beams and become even more amazed!
San Diego’s current Linda Vista Branch Library opened in 1987. When I took these photos, the green trees at the front entrance obscured some of the building. But the essential beauty of the design comes through.
