The San Diego Zombie Walk took place last evening. The spooky Halloween season event was staged at Childrens Park, across Harbor Drive from the Convention Center. I got some photos!

Zombies could be seen converging on the park from every direction. There seemed to be no stopping them.

Here comes an undead bride in her blood-splattered bridal gown. Pedestrians have fled every which way!

This towering, bloody butcher has nearly captured a helpless victim. Everyone in downtown San Diego surely heard the lady’s blood-curdling scream of terror!

The walking dead, some of them terribly decayed and disfigured, gathered in the park with a singular purpose. To feast on flesh!

Some of these zombies might smile, but don’t let it fool you. The one in the cowboy hat is about to get a surprise!

Tattered, ghostly sails of the haunted Star!

As Halloween approaches, I’ve noticed some changes during my walks about San Diego. A few scary decorations have begun to appear here and there among houses, shops and offices. One change in particular is difficult to miss.

The Star of India has put on her tattered sails!

A spooky Star of India makes a very cool October sight on San Diego Bay. This year, visitors who experience Haunting Tales from our Seafaring Past, in addition to touring the venerable old ship, will hear ghost stories and scary legends about life at sea. Kids attending are encouraged to dress in costume. In the days ahead, I’ll probably see a lot of pint-sized pirates shuffling along the Embarcadero!

The Star of India, owned by the San Diego Maritime Museum, recently turned 150 years old. The world’s oldest active sailing ship, she was originally named Euterpe, after the Greek muse of music and poetry. During her lifetime she’s made 21 circumnavigations of the globe, and has hauled cargo, emigrants and even fish in Alaska. Various people have died on board, including her first captain, and there have been reports of ghostly sightings. Some visitors say they feel the touch of a cold hand when they stand near the mast where a young sailor, a stowaway, fell from the rigging to his death in 1884. Step aboard if you dare!

Funny skeleton tries to get a bone tattoo!

This morning, as I began to climb Bankers Hill, I casually glanced into this tattoo parlor and was immediately horrified.

Just inside the window, a poor skeletal artist was attempting to apply ink to a sadly bony customer. Not much progress was being made.

Seriously, I believe this funny window display was created for Halloween!

Yesterday morning, as I walked through the Gaslamp, I spied some spooky new banners hanging from the lamp posts. Looks like Halloween is coming!

Monsters, aliens and trolls on a Haunted Trail!

Yikes! Look at the creatures I spotted lurking among the trees on the west side of Balboa Park! That big one looks like a gigantic bloody yeti with goat hooves. Watch out!

What are scary monsters, aliens and trolls doing in Balboa Park? They’re being created for Halloween . . . to populate The Haunted Trail! Sunday afternoon I spotted the huge creatures under construction behind a fence. Look how high that bloody monster stands compared to the step ladder! I also observed a human dummy in an electric chair and loads of more weird, grotesque scenery.

San Diego’s unique Haunted Trail has been raising goosebumps for years now. Looks like visitors to this dark outdoor “haunted house” will be in for a lot of screaming!

Here’s a fun pic of an artistic Halloween display seen on a random shop wall in Seaport Village. I don’t recall the name of the store. The colorful arrangement of crafty witches, owls and pumpkins is a feast for the eyes!

I notice this morning that temperatures outside are cooling. Autumn is in the air and Halloween is around the corner!
