Passengers beware! Super powered individuals have been observed on a San Diego trolley–and there’s no escape from the mayhem!
I should say–you can’t escape seeing this bold new trolley wrap that promotes the popular Amazon Prime series The Boys!
Pop culture fans can look forward to riding this cool The Boys trolley during Comic-Con 2024. It’s the seventh different Comic-Con trolley wrap that I’ve seen running through the city so far!

Music lovers gathered at Waterfront Park on San Diego’s Embarcadero this afternoon for a special event. They had come to listen to the second concert of San Diego’s newest arts and music series, Blanket Sounds!
As concert time neared, blankets, beach chairs and umbrellas multiplied by the stage, and the growing audience anticipated performances by DJ Mr. Hek and San Diego’s World Punk Band QUEL BORDEL!
Everyone was welcome at this multicultural and multigenerational community gathering. Kids ran and played on the grass. Families enjoyed picnics.
I lingered for a bit, enjoyed the mellow Sunday afternoon atmosphere, and took these photos. There are two more free Blanket Sounds concerts to go this summer. Find out more here!

The House of USA hosted a special program today in San Diego’s always amazing Balboa Park. Independence Day was celebrated at the International Cottages!
The Sons of the American Revolution and the National Society of the Children of the American Revolution were a big part of the patriotic event. Members in colonial attire were eager to educate the public about our nation’s early history.
I learned how the Children of the American Revolution is the nation’s oldest and largest patriotic youth organization. Members are under the age of 22, and have descended from an individual who provided military of civil service or gave material support to the cause of independence during the American Revolution. Their mission is to train future leaders and promote love of the United States and its heritage among youth. The young members I met were fine, well-spoken representatives of the organization.
The event included inspiring verbal presentations concerning the women of the American Revolution. Speakers represented historical personalities, including groundbreaking African American poet Phillis Wheatley; activist, author and Bill of Rights advocate Mercy Otis Warren; Deborah Sampson who disguised herself as a man to join the Patriot forces; and Lydia Darragh, who hid in a closet to eavesdrop on a secret meeting, learning about a surprise attack by the British on Washington’s troops.
The speakers were followed by several dances that would be typical during this era of American history. The Folk Dancers of Balboa Park danced to She’ll Be Coming Round the Mountain, the Virginia reel and other familiar tunes.
Then the San Diego City Guard Band, which was founded way back in 1880, took to the stage and performed music fit for the occasion, starting with America the Beautiful.

Independence Day was celebrated today, the Fourth of July, in Old Town San Diego State Historic Park!
A festival atmosphere drew families to the central plaza, where the public could freely enjoy live music, crafts, old-fashioned outdoor games like sack races and tug of war, and even a simulated telegraph office! The Boosters of Old Town San Diego, raising funds for the park, raffled off a valuable quilt and offered fun handmade gifts for those passing by.
California State Park employees and volunteers wore 19th century attire. With a little imagination, strolling through the grassy plaza would feel like stepping back in time. Lovers of Americana, nostalgia and San Diego’s early history were all smiles.
Red, white and blue could be seen throughout the State Park. The various museums were open and welcoming. Spinners and quilters were demonstrating their craft at Threads of the Past, while several blacksmiths were hammering red hot iron at the Blacksmith Shop. Curious visitors could listen to explanations as they looked on.
It was a special day in a very special place.

The third trolley wrap to appear in San Diego for Comic-Con 2024 promotes the ABC television series Abbott Elementary. And you can’t possibly miss it!
The fun circus graphics refer to the Abbott Elementary A.V.A. Fest (or A Very Abbott Festival), which originated in a classic episode in the show’s second season.
Critically acclaimed through its first three seasons, Abbott Elementary has been renewed for a fourth season. The humorous interactions of its well-rounded characters has kept the good-natured sitcom fresh and enjoyable!

The Switchfoot Bro-Am was held today on Moonlight Beach in Encinitas. The popular surfing and live music Beach Fest celebrated its 20th anniversary!
Back in 2005, internationally famous rock band Switchfoot, whose members grew up in San Diego surfing and making music, held their first Bro-Am on the beach. They started Bro-Am to help local, at-risk youth, and lift them up.
Since then, the surf competition and musical offerings have grown. I saw thousands out enjoying the day today, sunbathing on blankets before the main stage, wandering about the sand, playing, watching surfing action, and checking out the booths of various charities that benefit from this wonderful event. I saw folks from Rady Children’s Hospital, Feeding San Diego, the Monarch School and the Challenged Athletes Foundation! (Just a few.)
At heart, Bro-Am is about celebrating kids. They represent our future. And lots of kids were out on the sand, having a blast!
The Rob Machado Bro-Junior surf competition was for younger athletes. A second smaller stage featured youthful performers from the School of Rock.
I didn’t hang around long enough to hear Switchfoot perform–as I left for the Coaster train station to head back home, the great group Jettee was up on the main stage rocking the beach!

The Snowpiercer train was seen moving through San Diego today!
The second trolley wrap for Comic-Con 2024 promotes the popular drama, whose fourth season will premier in July on AMC!
As I snapped a several photos at a trolley station, I recognized new cast members, particularly Clark Gregg, whose well-known visage has appeared in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., The Avengers, Thor, and umpteen other MCU movies. (He’s not a robot, is he? Just kidding.)
Well, come to think of it, I doubt this was the actual Snowpiercer train, seeing how there weren’t hundreds of cars barreling along, and no snow whatsoever to be seen in sunny San Diego…

An odd collection of ghosts has materialized on a San Diego Trolley for Comic-Con 2024!
The first trolley wrap for San Diego Comic-Con this year features three shows that can be viewed on Paramount+. Let the fun begin!
Ghosts is a comedy that has been renewed for a fourth season. Perhaps the deceased characters became tired of haunting the same old place for so many years, and decided to startle trolley riders in San Diego!
This new wrap on a trolley car also includes promotional images for Elsbeth and Tracker.
I wonder if Justin Hartley will use some of his tracking skills acquired while wielding a bow and arrow as Oliver Queen in Smallville? Just kidding. I liked Smallville.

The annual Fringe Festival returns this week to San Diego!
For a stretch of 11 days, unusual, innovative, sometimes bizarre performances by relative unknowns will be enjoyed at venues in Balboa Park and across San Diego!
Bad Behavior. Messes Solo Circus. I Need a Beer. Puppet Bash. Kid Goblin. Taptastic. Spiked Punch. Pirates of Hamlet. These are some of the numerous theatrical acts that you’ll be able to enjoy with the purchase of affordable tickets. Proceeds go entirely to the artists!
The two main venues for the Fringe Festival in 2024 are the Marie Hitchcock Puppet Theater and the Centro Cultural de la Raza in Balboa Park. Tickets can be purchased outside each show or online.
I’ve randomly bought tickets to several shows in the past, not knowing what to expect. I noted the actors are all striving hard to achieve success. The performances can be a bit unpolished or crazy or unconventional, but they’re super creative and fun!
