Here come the San Diego Comic-Con offsites!

Comic-Con is back in full force! After a few difficult years, due to COVID and a writers strike, it seems that in 2024 the epic international pop culture convention is going to be bigger and more exciting than ever! And outside the San Diego Convention Center there will be many fun offsites for the public to enjoy!

Many of those offsite activations are now under construction with less than a week to go until Comic-Con begins.

I walked around downtown San Diego, the Gaslamp and the convention center this morning and found all sorts of exciting activity. Check out these photos…

First up, The Lodge is under construction at the Happy Does Bar on Fifth Avenue. The Lodge is an activation that will showcase Paramount+ shows…

Next, at Gaslamp Square, Peacock’s unique Those About to Die Chariot Racing offsite is under construction. I was told visitors can actually ride around the tiny colosseum that is being built!

When I walked over the Harbor Drive pedestrian bridge, I noticed a lot of canopies are being prepared outside the San Diego Convention Center! It’s summer, the lines and crowds will be big, and shade will be welcome!

Between the convention center and the Hilton San Diego Bayfront, FX is setting up on the grass in their usual spot. I suspect that big building wrap on the Hilton will promote What We Do in the Shadows…

Not much is ready with Adult Swim’s offsite, yet. Looks like their usual setup…

I believe that next behind the convention center is the Hulu offsite. I’ll have to wait and see. I read the Abbott Elementary A.V.A. Fest offsite will be somewhere back here, too…

The Marriott Marquis San Diego Marina’s Terrace is where Dragon Ball will have their always super cool offsite. Workers were cleaning to get ready this morning…

A Shaun of the Dead offsite will be at 520 Fifth Avenue during Comic-Con 2024. I spotted a Winchester Tavern sign on the sidewalk outside!

What are these mysterious props coming down the street in a truck? Time will tell!

UPDATE!

The following morning I walked around to see what progress had been made…

First, I found where the Abbott Elementary offsite will be–at the end of the superyacht landing. They were getting ready to erect the A.V.A. FEST’s big swing ride!

Then I walked past Hulu’s huge site, which they continue to work on…

I passed the Adult Swim offsite by, where not much had happened yet, and then checked out FX’s progress, including their big wrap on the Hilton…

I crossed over to the Gaslamp where I checked out Peacock’s Those About to Die chariot racing offsite. My next blog post will show what I saw here this Sunday morning in more detail.

On the grass to one side of the Hilton San Diego Gaslamp some workers had begun conferring. I didn’t speak to them, but I’m assuming the Marvel Champions Ferris wheel will be here.

Some more construction going on at The Lodge…

And the Shaun of the Dead offsite up Fifth Avenue is making progress..

Photos of San Diego preparing for Comic-Con!

It’s less than a week to go before the start of Comic-Con 2024. Preparations for the big international event in downtown San Diego have accelerated into high gear!

If you’ve been following this blog, you’ve seen a number of trolley and building wraps that are already finished or in the process of being applied. Today, however, completely new building wraps are appearing by the waterfront, and “offsite” activations have begun construction!

I walked around East Village early this morning and the Gaslamp Quarter late this afternoon. I’ve captured a number of photographs that provide a taste of the exciting pre-Comic-Con action in downtown San Diego!

Peacock’s Those About to Die Chariot Racing offsite is under construction in Gaslamp Square. It’s near the big new video board, which is showing an advertisement for the Roman gladiator series that premiered yesterday! (You can spy the growing wrap for FOX’s Animation Domination on the Omni hotel in the background.)

Presumably chariots will be racing here!

Here’s a relatively new trolley wrap design that I hadn’t seen until today. It promotes The Boys on Amazon Prime.

The Hard Rock Hotel is being wrapped with SpongeBob graphics. I posted other photos recently.

Is this Comic-Con? No, this is Patrick!

Wrapping the Fifth Avenue side of the Hard Rock Hotel is now beginning in earnest.

On the convention center side of the Hilton San Diego Gaslamp Quarter, a wrap goes up promoting Anne Rice’s Immortal Universe on AMC. I’ve photographed a couple of other related wraps on the hotel already–one of which you can glimpse here.

I’ve spotted a couple of Comic-Con logos now on the San Diego Convention Center.

On the Marriott Marquis, looks like a Star Trek wrap is going up. The thing on the left is an Esri User Conference wrap now being removed. That convention in San Diego is over.

A huge wrap is also going up on the Hilton San Diego Bayfront. It will likely promote a show on FX.

Advertisements posted along Fifth Avenue promote a special Comic-Con cruise!

Walking Dead’s Daryl Dixon, The Book of Carol characters in the windows of the Pendry hotel.

Graphic in the window of the Sonic the Hedgehog Speed Cafe pop-up. I plan to go there tomorrow!

A simply painted Dungeons & Dragon 50th Anniversary expanded into this awesome mural a few days ago. It’s outside Super7.

Some of the fun collectibles in BAIT in the Gaslamp Quarter. They’re going to have all sorts of activities during Comic-Con 2024!

Comic-Con building wraps, banners appear in San Diego!

Here we go! Comic-Con 2024 is a little over a week away, and gigantic building wraps and banners have begun to appear in downtown San Diego!

Late this afternoon I walked near the San Diego Convention Center and through the Gaslamp Quarter, and observed how many workers must have been very busy today!

First, I noticed the tall Park 12 high-rise near Petco Park has a humungous double building wrap promoting Nickelodeon’s Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, which will be streaming on Paramount+ on August 9.

On the Harbor Drive side of the Hilton San Diego Bayfront hotel parking garage there’s now a big banner advertising the video game Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree.

On the San Diego Convention Center side of the same parking garage there’s an even bigger banner anticipating DRAGON BALL: Sparking! ZERO. The video game is coming on October 11, 2024.

On the corner of the parking garage is this…

While walking near Gaslamp Square, I looked up at that new big video board and discovered a long advertisement for Those About to Die, a Roman gladiator series on Peacock that begins on July 18! NBCUniversal usually has their offsite here.

Look what’s going up on the Hard Rock Hotel! A wrap that celebrates SpongeBob’s 25th anniversary! SpongeBob Squarepants premiered on July 17, 1999.

Finally, I noticed a big mural at Happy Does on Fifth Avenue. It indicates that Paramount+ offsite The Lodge will be here!

Woohoo! Comic-Con 2024 is getting very close, so I’m taking Cool San Diego Sights into “Comic-Con mode” for the next couple weeks!

Don’t fret if you don’t care for this stuff, however. I’ve got San Diego photos that I’ll share after Comic-Con ends that many of you might like. Stay tuned!

UPDATE!

The following day (July 16) I took this photograph of the Hard Rock Hotel. I learned from a hotel employee that the interior will have a SpongeBob theme this year.

Fantastic Four banners appear before Comic-Con!

Reed Richards and Johnny Storm on a Comic-Con street lamp banner in San Diego.

Banners promoting Marvel’s popular superhero team Fantastic Four and their upcoming movie (due to open in 2025), have appeared in San Diego for Comic-Con 2024!

The news that Marvel will have a panel in Hall H this year probably means they’ll be promoting Deadpool & Wolverine, which opens during Comic-Con, plus the highly anticipated The Fantastic Four.

I personally look forward to the movie. The Fantastic Four is one of my favorite teams. Cosmic enemies and super science and a warm family dynamic usually result in stirring, highly imaginative stories.

Hopefully the Reed Richards in the upcoming film is a wee bit smarter than the one who got himself turned into spaghetti by the Scarlet Witch!

Sue Storm and Ben Grimm.

Giant videoboard in Gaslamp activated!

A gigantic videoboard, installed in Gaslamp Square, has been activated! Two huge LED walls are mounted high in the air, attracting the attention of people near the San Diego Convention Center, Petco Park and the Gaslamp Quarter!

When I walked past the videoboard this morning, at least one worker was still up a ladder finishing the installation.

Bright videos that were running included promos for the Padres, MTS, and our beautiful City of San Diego. Mixed in were several advertisements, including one for a popular baseball video game.

Gaslamp Square, located directly next to the Gaslamp trolley station, has become a hub for many downtown activities such as Comic-Con. Now this outdoor space will be even more lively!

Chula Vista resort and convention center rises!

The massive Gaylord Pacific Resort and Convention Center now under construction in Chula Vista is looking very impressive. I walked past the project site last December and saw nothing but mounds of dirt and several large cranes. Look at how the main hotel building has risen since then!

When completed, the hotel will have 1,600 guest rooms and suites, as well as more than 477,000 square feet of function and convention space. Upper floors of the hotel will offer views of the Pacific Ocean across San Diego Bay and the Silver Strand.

I took these photos on a sunny South Bay morning, just before my visit to the Boston Tea Party anniversary event near the Chula Vista Marina. My first (and most picturesque) photograph is from the Bayside Park fishing pier.

What’s better than cartoons on Saturday morning? Comic-Con!

Inspector Gadget and Gamisodes have descended on San Diego for Comic-Con 2023!

Could anything possibly be better than those Saturday cartoons you watched as a kid?

Yes! Saturday morning at Comic-Con!

Alvin. Alvin! ALVIN!!!

This dog was unimpressed by cartoon Snoopy.

You won’t see this on Saturday morning television!

People download a game to gain a donut.

Cool guy from Zander Comix has appeared at other San Diego events!

These guys with the creepy heads informed me they’re from Cinema Makeup School in Los Angeles.

Speaking of peculiar heads. Perhaps the Jack in the Box character could star in a fun cartoon.

Heading over Harbor Drive toward the area behind the San Diego Convention Center on Saturday morning of Comic-Con.

News flash! Harley Back At Arkham! Why do lunatics always run the insane asylum?

Huh? I thought the pandemic was over.

I told you this is fun, didn’t I?

Where else can you stand in line with a dinosaur?

These unsuspecting people will soon be transformed into two dimensional cartoons themselves!

Hopefully the Planet Express doesn’t fire up its engine.

Burgers on a Saturday morning? Why not.

Voodoo Ranger beer on a Saturday morning? Too early for me.

Someone here is determined to make the most of Saturday morning.

A guard permitted me to take a photo of the back of the Only Murders in the Building activation. Two hour wait line. I’ll try later perhaps…

Saturday morning breakfast to go.

This is what fun looks like!

Waiting at Grand Central-42 Street Station. Might be a long while before transportation arrives.

Four strange beings have emerged through the Quantum Leap portal.

Nelvin of the Union Tribune documents another lifeform that must have come through that portal.

Hellfire Clubbers no doubt recovering from a party late Friday.

Someone should mention something to this unsuspecting guy.

Yikes! This shark must get more respect than Jabberjaw. Some of you older folks remember Jabberjaw, right?

All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.

It’s the 25th Anniversary of That 70s Show.

We had a station wagon similar to this when I was a kid.

A street artist was displaying his cool artwork on the Fifth Avenue sidewalk.

Not sure what this is, but looks like fun!

Lots of Comic-Con related donuts can be found at the Donut Bar Pop-Up Shop inside the Pendry hotel.

A big, crazy San Diego party begins!

Here we go! One of the biggest parties in San Diego has begun! It’s Preview Night for Comic-Con 2023. For the next four days massive crowds will descend upon downtown San Diego to celebrate popular culture!

Late this afternoon vendors and fans were converging on the San Diego Convention Center. The exhibit floor opens at 6 pm. Those with Preview Night tickets will be able to get an idea of the cool stuff they will see when Comic-Con begins in earnest tomorrow.

Meanwhile, areas around the convention center and the Gaslamp Quarter were nearly ready for the big crazy party. A few pop-ups and offsite activations are being readied at the last minute. A huge line of people was waiting to enter the Dragon Ball offsite near the Marriott Marina. The Lodge offsite by Paramount was already open, too.

Many members of the media have arrived on the scene, too, as Comic-Con 2023 will receive international coverage.

Enjoy some fun photographs from a mid-afternoon walk!

Comic-Con 2023 officially begins tomorrow in San Diego. This evening thousands will converge on the San Diego Convention Center for Preview Night.

Is San Diego ready for the big event? Almost!

This morning I noticed how most of the outside activations are in the last stages of completion. I also saw groups of vendors and other participants streaming through the Gaslamp heading for the convention center. Walking about, I even spotted some cool cosplay!

CVS created a unique Comic-Con 23 display using soft drink boxes!

The Lodge now has snowy trees around its entrance. Perhaps it snowed overnight.

SpongeBob is hanging out inside The Lodge!

Are those guys in black vampires from the Immortal Universe?

Quantum Leap HQ is ready to transport visitors through spacetime.

Before you travel through spacetime, grab some grub at the Quantum Cantina.

Live shows overlooking Gaslamp Square will be held on this balcony. Watch for celebrities!

Promotional graphics are everywhere.

The Abbott Elementary wraps on Petco Park are finished.

Another wrap promoting Abbott Elementary.
