The Futurism and Tech Pavilion at 2017 San Diego Comic-Con occupies a large area of one floor inside the Omni Hotel.
There’s a super cool, free attraction during 2017 Comic-Con that relatively few people seem to know about. It’s the Futurism and Tech Pavilion, located up that long glass-enclosed escalator in the Omni Hotel.
You’ll discover the very latest entertainment technology (some of which will blow your mind) and no badge is required! If you are interested in virtual reality, this place is absolutely a must see.

This cool, free Comic-Con venue allows organizations and businesses to showcase their latest efforts in technology, artificial intelligence and virtual reality.The AI Innovation Fair area includes artificial intelligence, robotics and other related technology.Hyperloop Transportation Technologies and RE’FLEKT demonstrate a futuristic transportation concept with virtual reality.This guy representing Brain2Bot demonstrated simple AI in a robot that mimics a dog. Eating magnetic pellets that it gathers with a tongue makes it happy!These interactive Professor Einstein robots challenge people with brain games.Inside a second room, many entertainment companies demonstrated their latest technology, including VR, holograms, video game controllers, and more.The Sonic the Hedgehog booth had people jump for a ring in front of a green screen for prizes. They could see themselves in a video game.Project Cars 2 had these super cool driving simulators.Artist Rob Prior had a booth with some of his cool pop art. I learned he includes a chicken head hidden in every piece.Bruce Lee and Joker.Kirk and Spock.The Mira Prism uses your iPhone to produce holograms in your field of view!

The Comedy Central series Broad City has a cool, free attraction where people can paint the walls of a room with colorful scenes from the show! It’s paint by numbers! It’s a brilliant idea that inspires fan interaction! Take a look!
Anyone can enjoy this Broad City special attraction during Comic-Con. Rabbits have been created to commemorate the history of San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter, which once was nicknamed Rabbitville.
A “hop-up” art gallery can be found in the Gaslamp during 2017 San Diego Comic-Con! This fun Rabbitville exhibition, located at 453 Fifth Avenue, features a roomful of large colorful rabbits created by local artists! Their artwork celebrates the rich, unique history of the Gaslamp Quarter and San Diego.
You might recall we saw the Willabee rabbit at the Jacaranda Spring Thing, when I blogged about it here. Well, now you can enjoy a whole warren of art bunnies!

Observe his fingers. He’s ready to play a Jedi mind trick on me!A really good Assassin’s Creed cosplay at Comic-Con.A friendly artist has lots of cool art for sale along MLK Promenade near Harbor Drive and First Avenue. These are painted on plastic.More of his cool artwork. I see Storm and Catwoman.A young Sheldon Cooper is coming to CBS! A humorous sculpture stands on the sidewalk outside the Ron English POPaganda art exhibit in San Diego.
There’s a small but eye-popping exhibit a few blocks from most of the Comic-Con action that many art lovers should enjoy–particularly those who are fans of Ron English and his style of humorous, anti-corporate art.
I visited his POPaganda exhibit and captured a few photos to provide an idea of what you will see. This is the first US stop of his “Make America GRIN Again” tour. I wonder who is grinning? Personally, I found it a bit ironic that the effort to sell profuse merchandise seems to eclipse his few (but delightful) pieces of anti-consumerist art. But what do I know?
You can find this fun pop-up exhibit at 1037 J Street. It’s open Wednesday through Saturday 11:00am to 6:00pm. Ron English will be present and signing from 3:00pm to 5:00pm, Thursday through Saturday.
The Statue of Liberty is grinning like a skull during 2017 Comic-Con.Looks like a Hulkish, supersized Ronald McDonald with red stretchy pants. He must work out after taking in all those calories.It’s Sugar Diabetic Bear!Looks somewhat like Franken Berry. Uh, oh! This subversive exhibit is making me hungry for sugary cereal!

Models of characters in the stop motion animated film ParaNorman displayed inside the Laika Experience San Diego for 2017 Comic-Con.
The Laika Experience San Diego opened this afternoon! This very cool exhibit created in the Gaslamp by Laika Entertainment runs through the end of Comic-Con. It’s free to the public and well worth checking out! You can find it at 520 Fifth Avenue.
Here are a few photos I took of the many highly detailed models, props, sets and puppets used by Laika in making their four films: Coraline, ParaNorman, The Boxtrolls, and Kubo and the Two Strings.
Laika still uses the stop motion method to create their awesome animation. I learned they only use CGI sparingly, for things that are difficult to animate, like fire and water. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and the kids in our small group had a blast. There are lots of amazing models from each of their four movies, and a video and informative displays that explain the stop motion animation process.

Local artist Suzka has created some colorful artwork that includes elements from San Diego Comic-Con, popular culture and comic books.
Check this out! There’s a bunch of cool, original San Diego Comic-Con artwork on display in an eatery not far from the convention center! Head a couple blocks up First Avenue and step inside Simon’s Cafe to see these colorful Comic-Con paintings!
The artist’s name is Suzka, and you can read her bio in one of my photos–click it to enlarge for easier reading.
This morning I had a lot of fun looking at this art inside the cafe while waiting for my breakfast burrito. (Which was pretty good, too!)

A number of fine sculptures by artists T.J. Dixon and James Nelson can be spotted around San Diego. During a walk down San Diego Avenue in Old Town, I paused to photograph their 1995 sculpture of two life size female figures in terracotta. Here come lots of photos of street art in Normal Heights. I captured these while walking east along the south side of Adams Avenue, from I-805 to 35th Street. Then I crossed the street and walked back west to the bridge that spans the freeway.
