The world’s No. 1 tennis player from Balboa Park!

Did you know one of the best players in the history of tennis made Balboa Park her home?

Maureen Connolly grew up in San Diego and played at the Balboa Tennis Club. (Which recently celebrated its centennial.)

“Little Mo” would go on to win nine major singles titles in the early 1950s, and would be the first woman to win the Grand Slam. She was the number one ranked female tennis player from 1952 through 1954, and was also voted female athlete of the year from 1951 to 1953!

Should you visit the Balboa Tennis Club, you’ll see a special tribute to Maureen Connolly outside their Pro Shop. I took these photos during a walk through the Morley Field Sports Complex a few weeks ago.

Incidentally, did you know tennis phenom Michael Chang, the youngest man in history to win a singles major, also made the courts in Balboa Park his home?

A dreamy, surreal mural in Oceanside!

This dreamy, surreal mural was painted in 2017 at Pappy’s Market in Oceanside. Visible from the corner of Surfrider Way and Cleveland Street, the artwork, spilling its weirdness, spirituality and symbolism, decorates the south side of the building.

The artist is Elna (@eln4), who is half of the Brothers of Light duo.

The two artists’ distinctive murals have been painted internationally, but primarily in Israel, where they grew up.

Balboa Park readies for Valentine’s Day!

Valentine’s Day is two days away!

As I walked through Balboa Park this afternoon, I saw signs that several of the International Cottages are ready.

Not to be outdone, the Marie Hitchcock Puppet Theater is heralding an out of this world Alien Valentine!

At work in Star of India’s sail maker’s cabin!

Master woodworker Kevin Deal was working today in the sail maker’s cabin of Star of India. I saw him chiseling away at some wood as I visited the Maritime Museum of San Diego, and I had to ask what he was doing.

I learned that Kevin was improving a belaying pin rail that is part of Star of India’s poop deck. A length of brass trim applied to one edge of the pin rail will protect the wood from being slowly eroded by ropes that run across it.

He showed me a few small hand planes that he will use. They are genuine antiques–from 125 to 150 years old! It seems only appropriate, as the pin rail is part of a historic tall ship that is turning 160 year old!

Kevin was also training today to be a Sail Rigger on the Maritime Museum’s tall ships.

The museum’s volunteers, young and old, come from all walks of life. Their diverse talents are put to good use!

House of Turkey raises earthquake relief funds.

The House of Turkey in Balboa Park is now raising earthquake relief funds. I learned this today as I walked through the International Cottages.

According to a House of Turkey flyer, one hundred percent of the money donated will go toward the earthquake relief effort, which includes providing life saving supplies.

Smiles at City Heights Multi-Cultural Festival of Love!

Today the City Heights Multi-Cultural Festival of Love was held in Officer Jeremy Henwood Memorial Park. The annual event roughly coincides with Valentine’s Day.

City Heights is one of San Diego’s most culturally diverse neighborhoods, and the heart-filled festival celebrates all the many people who make this community so vibrant!

Not only was there a diversity of entertainment on the main stage, but one could see in the crowd so many unique lives, backgrounds and stories.

During the festival everyone came together, making new friends, enjoying the unity that is found in community.

The parade through City Heights that preceded the festival ended with the Hoover High School marching band taking the stage. Then, at eleven o’clock, the festival officially began with opening comments by those who’ve made this wonderful event possible.

I stayed for a good while, looking at cool cars, exploring the booths of local organizations, and enjoying performances by Majesty in Motion, the Vietnamese Youth Dance Group and the Fern Street Circus.

Drummers Without Borders then invited kids in the crowd up onto the stage to learn how to drum and play tambourine! Then, with the help of the San Diego Guild of Puppetry, many participated in a small parade through the festival!

Festival of Love Parade through City Heights!

Before the start of today’s City Heights Multi-Cultural Festival of Love, there was a parade!

Smiling faces headed west down University Avenue, starting from The Neighborhood Cafe and Youth Print Shop. They arrived at Officer Jeremy Henwood Memorial Park near the City Heights Library just in time for the Festival of Love to begin!

The parade was a celebration of the City Heights community’s rich cultural diversity. And, of course, a celebration of love!

Surprised onlookers, standing on the sidewalk and in front yards, were urged to follow the parade to the fun Valentine’s Day themed Festival of Love!

I first spied the parade as it headed along University Avenue. I saw the Hoover High School marching band, lowriders and classic cars, the Fern Street Circus, and other local organizations from around the neighborhood.

My camera captured the excitement!

Nautical Neighbors swim through Oceanside!

An exquisite stained glass mural titled Nautical Neighbors was installed last summer in the heart of Oceanside.

All the abundant sea life swimming through the mural was designed and created by Don Myers and assembled by the citizens of Oceanside.

You can see this very beautiful public art at the intersection of Mission Avenue and Ditmar Street, across from the MainStreet Oceanside downtown information center.

Murals outside 1927 Riviera Apartment Hotel.

Two small murals decorate the original entrance to the 1927 Riviera Apartment Hotel. When I walk up Park Boulevard from downtown to Balboa Park, I often wonder about them.

The historic Riviera Apartment Hotel exists today as the WorldMark San Diego – Balboa Park, and what originally was the building’s front entrance is now the locked back door. Consequently, these panels are seen by few people.

Here’s a photograph of the building taken circa 1930. It’s hard to determine whether these panels are present inside the original entrance. (The vintage automobiles in the photograph resemble those in the second mural!)

The Riviera Apartment Hotel building has been designated Historical Landmark No. 468 by the City of San Diego.

A heart-shaped Love Wall stands on the patio of the Spanish Village Art Center in Balboa Park.

Many of us have a love affair with Balboa Park.

If life were a scrapbook containing our most cherished memories, pages would be filled with smiles in the park.

It is a place full of beauty, sunshine and laughter. It is a place that makes us feel happy and whole. Balboa Park loves us back.
