Solar eclipse breaks through in Balboa Park!

Would this morning’s solar eclipse be seen in San Diego? An overcast sky worried many who wished to observe the highly anticipated event.

A huge crowd lined up in Balboa Park near the Fleet Science Center to obtain eclipse glasses. Amateurs set up telescopes, large and small. With the help of Fleet scientists and volunteers, kids enjoyed several fun educational activities, including the creation of pinhole boxes for safe indirect viewing of the eclipse. At one side of the plaza, a laptop showed live images of the eclipse from some cloudless location. Families sat waiting on the edge of the park’s nearby fountain. Minutes were ticking away. Would those clouds above us thin in time, as everyone hoped?

And then–there it was! The crowd cheered! The moon was glimpsed off and on as it gradually passed over the sun’s disk in an annular eclipse that would, at its maximum, obscure about 70 percent of Earth’s own life-giving star.

Several minutes later, the sky would mostly clear, and many in San Diego would take delight in the awe-inspiring spectacle.

Exhibit for San Diego City Clerk’s Archives Month!

A great exhibit is now open to the public inside the lobby of downtown San Diego’s City Administration Building. The San Diego City Clerk is celebrating its 5th Annual Archives Month with displays concerning our city’s historic 1935-36 California Pacific International Exposition in Balboa Park!

Step into the City Administration Building in the next few days and you’ll discover old photographs and documents concerning the exposition, and even the big coin you see above!

This original coin, inscribed Welcome To America’s Exposition, was actually the welcome sign for San Diego’s second world’s fair, which followed the 1915-16 Panama-California Exposition, also held in Balboa Park.

The above 1935-36 California Pacific International Exposition Sign was donated to the City Clerk Archives for safekeeping.

There are many fascinating images on display, including photos of American presidents, dignitaries and celebrities who visited the expo almost a century ago. You also have an opportunity to take a selfie with a replica of the coin that is light enough to hold above your head!

Exquisite masterpieces come to Comic-Con Museum!

Visitors to the Comic-Con Museum are in for a treat! A large gallery on the second floor of the museum now features exquisite masterpieces by multiple award-winning artist Colleen Doran. The exhibition, which opened about a week ago, is titled Colleen Doran Illustrates Neil Gaiman.

It doesn’t matter if, like me, you are unfamiliar with the artist, or the author of short stories that she illustrates. The pieces of gorgeous original art on display will dazzle and enchant you.

The meticulous, lush art transports the viewer to another place, where fairy tales and Arthurian legends blend easily with this ordinary world we all know.

The centerpiece of Colleen Doran Illustrates Neil Gaiman is artwork from her Eisner-winning graphic novel Chivalry. The moment my eyes gazed into the first painted page of Chivalry, I was spellbound.

I suppose I need to read the story. It’s described on Amazon as a delightfully humorous and sweet fantasy. A sign at the Comic-Con Museum explains Chivalry is a story about memories, trust, and relationships. The characters are modeled on the artist’s own family. Her questing hero Galaad (Sir Galahad) isn’t ridiculed or vilified, as he would be in most contemporary literature, but is found worthy of the Grail he seeks.

Doran’s painted scenes convey to my eyes a deep love for life, where the human heart triumphs.

A short walk at Moonlight Beach Overlook.

There’s more than a beautiful view of the Pacific Ocean at the Moonlight Beach Overlook in Encinitas. There are a few bits of art, too!

Two trashcans are decorated with colorful tiles painted by youth.

The parklike Moonlight Beach Overlook isn’t large, but it’s a great place to relax, gaze down at the beach below, or perhaps enjoy a picnic on the grass.

The following overlook sign can be spotted just south of the main Moonlight Beach parking lot.

The Pacific Playground mural at Moonlight Beach!

An extraordinary mural depicting life in (and above) the ocean can be found on Moonlight Beach in Encinitas. Titled The Pacific Playground, the mural, composed of stained glass, stands next to the Moonlight Beach Marine Safety Center tower where lifeguards are stationed.

The 7 1/2 foot-by-15-foot mural was made possible by the Surfing Madonna Oceans Project and installed in 2018. The original design was conceived by artist Peggy Sue Zepeda; the mural was built by Don Myers and Manny Corona with the help of hundreds of volunteers from the community. Here’s an article about The Pacific Playground, published shortly after its installation.

The stained glass shines brightly in the Southern California sunshine. The words SAVE THE OCEAN crown colorful images of sea life. This inspired public art makes Moonlight Beach even more special.

Big poinsettia Christmas tree returning to Balboa Park!

The huge Christmas tree made of colorful poinsettias will be returning to Balboa Park this upcoming holiday season!

My friends at the San Diego History Center told me the exciting news during my recent visit!

Holiday preparation for Encinitas Heritage Tree!

The lighting of the Norfolk Island pine (star pine) at 4th and C Street, an Encinitas Heritage Tree, is anticipated by many families every holiday season. Hundreds turn out and count down to the moment when the tree’s cheerful Christmas lights flick on.

As I walked past the Encinitas Historical Society’s old 1883 Schoolhouse today, I noticed volunteers laying out new strands for the tree’s Christmas lights!

I learned that the enormous pine requires 18 strands, each 110 feet long. The combined strands will support a total of 1600 lights!

The friendly volunteers filled my ears with many old stories, and explained how Louie led the effort to decorate the tree 29 years ago. This Heritage Tree, which they call Louie’s Tree, is a little over 70 years old.

The lighting of the Heritage Tree in 2023, I’m told, will feature four children’s choirs. The program will take place on December 1, from 4 to 6 pm. You can’t miss the beautiful tree. It stands high above Moonlight Beach, a bit south of the main parking lot.

Dave grows Veterans Rock Garden in Encinitas!

Dave Dean has been adding painted stones to the new rock garden in front of American Legion San Dieguito Post 416 in Encinitas. I spoke to him today when I happened to walk down the sidewalk. He was working in what he calls the Veterans Rock Garden.

Many more stones will be painted with patriotic designs at future events. Dave hopes that the garden will one day contain thousands of colorful additions!

Yes, this is the same Dave responsible for Dave’s Rock Garden on B Street, a few blocks east of Moonlight Beach!

UPDATE!

In early 2025 I walked past the garden again and noticed it has grown!

Lobsterfest attracts hungry crowd in San Diego!

A large crowd has gathered on San Diego Bay today for Lobsterfest!

The big extravaganza for lobster lovers is taking place this morning on the pier between Seaport Village and Tuna Harbor–the same pier where the Tuna Harbor Dockside Market is held every Saturday.

Spiny lobsters on ice, freshly caught by local fishermen, are for sale to the public under a row of canopies.

Lobsters are also being prepared for eaters sitting at shady tables. The smell of lobsters on the grill is mouth-watering!

There’s even a band playing live music!

Going “back to the future” in San Diego!

It’s now possible to go “back to the future” in San Diego. A newly opened exhibition at the Comic-Con Museum, POPnology, takes visitors back in time, demonstrating how fantasies in the popular culture have often predicted future technology!

Artificial intelligence, smartphones, robotics, 3D-printing, virtual reality . . . many technological developments were first depicted in science fiction (including pulp magazines, novels, television, movies) long before they became real. POPnology celebrates how fantasy can become reality!

Do you know that author Jules Verne, in the 19th century, dreamed up videoconferencing, moon rockets and electric submarines? And that H. G. Wells predicted genetic engineering, lasers and automatic doors? And that Ray Bradbury anticipated earbuds, self-driving cars and ATMs, long before they existed?

This extensive exhibition is loaded with nostalgic artifacts, models and interactive displays. If you’re interested in the history of technology, there’s plenty of information for your brain.

And for fun? There’s a Back to the Future DeLorean, complete with flux capacitor! (Will time travel be in our future?) Kids can remotely manipulate a robot arm to transport dinosaur eggs. (Jurassic Park!) There’s an honest-to-goodness 3D-printed automobile. There are lots and lots of cool robots–a sure kid-pleaser. And much more!

There are surprising new discoveries at every turn!

POPnology is certain to fascinate both the young and the old, as it transports curious minds from the past (and present) to the future.
