I headed back to North County today. During my walk through Encinitas, along Coast Highway 101, I noticed many signs of the Holiday Season!
Not only did I spy workers hanging holiday lights on the Golden Lotus Tower of the Self-Realization Fellowship ashram, I saw the marquee of La Paloma Theatre features Elf and Die Hard XMAS.
Along the sidewalks and in shop windows I noticed poinsettias, wreaths, Christmas trees, and even ugly sweaters!
Enjoy a few fun photos!

The old downtown San Diego Superior Court building that once stood on Broadway was demolished over two years ago.
On the vanished courthouse’s large city block a 37-story mixed-use tower, called West, has risen. The project is now rapidly approaching completion.
New windows installed on the building’s exterior have brightened downtown with more mirror maze reflections!
I took these photographs today as I walked west on Broadway, then north up Union Street beside the Hall of Justice toward San Diego’s five-year-old Central Courthouse.
On a sunny day the blue sky seems painted on the shining glass!

Isabel Garcia is painting the windows of Starbucks for 2022 Comic-Con! I saw her today as I walked behind the convention center near the Hilton San Diego Bayfront!
Isabel is a local artist and muralist, part of Arte Atolondrada. Her creative partner is Shirish Villaseñor, who paints the windows of nearby Sweet Things Frozen Yogurt during Comic-Con!
If you’d like to check some of their mural work around San Diego, click here or here or here!
In the past few days, I’ve photographed the progress of Shirish’s windows for 2022 Comic-Con. You can see that here and here!

The Hard Rock Hotel in San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter is welcoming back Comic-Con! The big event had a two year’s absence due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
An awesome window display on the Sixth Avenue side of the Hard Rock Hotel contains a tribute to 2022 Comic-Con. There are all sorts of fun images and several very cool life size helmets that will be familiar to lovers of pop culture!
Superheroes reunite!

Look at all the cool stuff appearing in downtown San Diego as everyone prepares for the huge event!
All along Martin Luther King Jr. Promenade, banners have been hung promoting The CW superhero shows The Flash and Superman & Lois.
Dozens of trolley cars have been wrapped and are now seen cruising all over San Diego.
Here’s one that looks like a school bus. This was the first design to appear a few weeks ago. It promotes ABC television’s show Abbott Elementary.
Special trolley service will be offered by MTS during Comic-Con.
A Special Event Line will run between the Balboa Avenue station and 12th and Imperial. Needless to say, all the trolley lines will be quite busy! Read the notice. They can be obtained on the trolleys.
Fences now surround areas along MLK Promenade where offsite activations will be.
I was told by someone who appeared knowledgable that FOX will have an offsite near The New Children’s Museum. (I’m assuming it will be where FOX had their Ferris wheel one year.)
Childrens Park with its fountains is presently being renovated and won’t be used this year for Comic-Con.
The next photo is the grassy area by the Hilton Gaslamp. I look forward to seeing what pops up here!
On the convention center side of the Hard Rock Hotel, a wrap is being applied that promotes Apple TV+ show Severance.
San Diego artist and muralist Shirish Villaseñor (@shirishtheartist) has been adding color to her figures on the windows of Sweet Things Frozen Yogurt, at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront…
That huge Teen Wolf the Movie wrap on the Park 12 high-rise now has a second side! The pack is back!
And look what I spotted from the Harbor Drive pedestrian bridge. Another new trolley wrap! This one promotes The Gray Man in select theaters from NETFLIX.
I was then able to get a quick ground level photo as it went by…
Check out these super cool wraps in the Gaslamp Quarter that went up today. They promote Amazon Prime Video’s new series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.
Awesome! Looks like a third wrap is still going up…
Finally, the Fifth Avenue side of the Pendry San Diego hotel is almost done being wrapped. It promotes AMC’s new show Interview With The Vampire.
The friendly workers who were nearby gave my camera a thumbs up!

What’s this? It looks like 2022 Comic-Con has begun to slowly materialize by the San Diego Convention Center!
Local artist and muralist Shirish Villaseñor (@shirishtheartist) has begun painting the windows of Sweet Things Frozen Yogurt at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront. She’ll be working to complete the fun artwork in the coming days.
I’ll swing by to take more photos as these many painted characters assume color and life.
Meanwhile, for the next two weeks Cool San Diego Sights is in full Comic-Con mode! I live downtown, an easy walk from the huge international pop culture event.
Fear not! I’ll return to more “normal” San Diego sights once Comic-Con concludes!

Is it too early to get excited about Comic-Con returning full force to San Diego?
Of course not!
It’s been two years since the crazy, wonderful, international phenomenon known as Comic-Con filled the Convention Center and streets and hotels of San Diego!
As I walked down Fifth Avenue through the Gaslamp Quarter this morning, looking right and left for interesting material, I remembered that the big pop culture celebration is less than two months away now.
I’m starting to get fired up!
As usual, I’m taking Comic-Con week off from work. I’ll be walking randomly around downtown (where I live) making fun discoveries and photographing the endless cool sights!
Pretty soon the Comic-Con trolley wraps should be appearing! My eyes are peeled!
Not much to see yet, but these shop windows anticipate the big event…
UPDATE!
I spotted Sailor Moon a week or two later!

Students from the 8th Grade Culture Class at Barona Indian Charter School have created a Heritage Project concerning Kumeyaay culture and history. Their work will be displayed in an upcoming exhibition at the Mingei International Museum in Balboa Park!
The exhibition is titled Kum ‘Enyaawapch Ewuupch which is in the northern dialect of the Kumeyaay language. Translated to English, it means The Way We See It.
The exhibition has its big opening celebration on May 26, 2022. See all the details here!
I learned about this exhibition as I walked past the entrance of the Mingei International Museum last weekend. Photos of students filled one window, near an informative sign.
You can hear introductions by the participating students on the Barona Cultural Center & Museum website here!
