As I walked around Coronado before the big Fourth of July parade, I noticed all sorts of cool public artwork I’d never seen before.
Most notably, a whole bunch of utility boxes have recently been jazzed up with images that represent the life and history of Coronado. The project, called Art Outside the Box, is sponsored by The City of Coronado Cultural Arts Commission and Caltrans. I photographed two of the eight boxes. I suppose I’ll swing by the other six some other day.
I also saw a couple of cool public restroom trailers that the City of Coronado uses during special events. I’m not sure how many of these exist, but I do recall seeing one years ago during a walk near the Hotel Del and Coronado Shores. It didn’t occur to me to photograph that one back then!
The two trailers I spied today at either end of Spreckels Park celebrate Coronado’s railroad history and the fun Tent City carousel, which today makes its home in Balboa Park.
Finally, I got some photos of a public piano that had been set up in Rotary Plaza. A plaque on it suggests that people passing by Sit a Spell and Play a Tune! It’s covered with images of Coronado landmarks.

Six teams of firefighters from California play stickball in Little Italy on a fine summer Sunday.
My walk today began on Cortez Hill and proceeded down through Little Italy until I reached the Embarcadero. I then headed south along the water.
It’s a simple walk that never gets old.
Good times on Columbia Street.Bayside Fire Station No. 2 is finally open!A friendly firefighter told me the engines arrived on Friday!Volunteers pull a huge rope together on the deck of Star of India.Climbing up into clouds of sail.Visitors to the Maritime Museum of San Diego exit from the Soviet submarine.More museum volunteers handling ropes and chains by the water.The museum’s longboat was out on San Diego Bay. An overcast but very pleasant start to the morning.Two huge ships at the Cruise Ship Terminal. The superyacht Attessa IV and impressive U. S. Coast Guard cutter Healy (WAGB-20).Someone rides a scooter along Broadway Pier past the Coast Guard’s newest, most advanced polar icebreaker. I haven’t spotted any ice off San Diego!Family boards a Coronado ferry near Broadway Pier.Many people were out on the Embarcadero today enjoying wonderful San Diego.America, replica of the racing yacht that won the first America’s Cup, cruises past.And so does a sailboat.Walking and sitting above the shining water.Creating music.Out on a harbor cruise.Simply standing by the blue water.An easy float through the Marriott Marina.The San Diego Symphony is set up and ready to go for their outdoor summer concerts at Embarcadero Marina Park South.Bayside Summer Nights will feature lots of great concerts, and fireworks.On the water in a boat, and above it on a pier.I see the Coronado Island Marriott Resort beyond those fishermen.And here’s my favorite Coronado ferry, Silvergate. It usually departs near the San Diego Convention Center.

This morning I jumped off the trolley at the Rio Vista station, which is located beside the San Diego River in the heart of Mission Valley.
I knew I could find some fun street art at the Rio Vista shopping mall.
I headed down a sidewalk and there it was!

North Park is brimming with street art. During a walk yesterday down 30th Street, from University Avenue to Upas Street, I encountered fresh artwork that I haven’t blogged in the past. You can see some of those old photos here and here and here.
As I proceeded down the sidewalk I noticed that a number of electrical boxes and walls have been repainted in the past couple years.

A little before noon, I enjoyed a fine walk through the Gaslamp Quarter, mostly down Fifth Avenue.
A lot of people were about for a late Saturday morning. So many exciting events going on today.
The World Cup. Taste of the Gaslamp. The Etsy market at Horton Plaza Park. People out on a walking tour, learning about the Gaslamp’s extraordinary old buildings and lively history. And the tourists, the workers, and downtown residents like me.

What a crazy week. I was so busy tracking down Comic-Con trolley wraps, I didn’t have time to sort through photographs I took in Balboa Park last Sunday.
When I finally reviewed the photos this morning, I noticed they all had a wonderful something in common: simple sunshine and happiness.
Balboa Park never grows old.

Today I enjoyed one of my favorite places. I took a slow walk through the Japanese Friendship Garden in Balboa Park.
Beauty is cultivated and revered in this very special garden.
It’s almost like heaven–so close to perfection.
After strolling along the clear stream in the Lower Garden, I headed up out of the canyon and paused for a few moments in the Exhibit Hall. I sat on a bench, near a window overlooking the Dry Stone Garden. Several participants in an afternoon Japanese Tea Ceremony were quietly practicing.
Refinement and elegance.
Deeper meaning.
A joy for life.
So close to perfection.

This afternoon I also enjoyed a visit to Balboa Park’s lush Botanical Building. When I got home, I used my computer to convert photographs of plants and flowers into colorful oil paintings!

This long, lazy weekend I’ve been sifting through my computer, searching for fun photos that I haven’t used yet. I discovered a few that I’d like to share.

So far this Memorial Day weekend I’ve enjoyed short walks through several favorite places. I’ve done a lot of sitting, reading, writing, eating ice cream, enjoying sunshine. And I’ve taken photos, of course. I always carry my little camera in hand. So why not?
