The holiday season wouldn’t be the same without a new San Diego tradition: the Holly Jolly Trolley!
Excited people gathered this morning for a festive ride aboard the original, now vintage 1001 car of the San Diego Trolley.
Today only, the Holly Jolly Trolley travels in a loop through downtown San Diego. Before and after the trip, passengers meet Santa, enjoy hot cocoa, get a trolley Christmas tree ornament, take photographs at a special booth and more at the Gaslamp trolley station.
This year–the event’s Second Annual–seats were quickly sold out, but that didn’t prevent me from walking around the Gaslamp station and seeing the fun!

Natalie Miragliotta, 2024 California Cinderella Teen, smiles at the La Jolla Holiday Festival!
Before the 68th Annual La Jolla Christmas Parade kicked off today, a Holiday Festival beside the parade route got underway in the late morning. Fun-seekers and families gathered for the colorful event in front of the Athenaeum Music and Arts Library!
A variety of activities could be freely enjoyed, including robotics demonstrations by students, a kids entrepreneur exhibit, face painting, and, of course, the opportunity to take photographs with Santa Claus!
I arrived for the afternoon’s Christmas Parade much too early. To pass the time, I took a long walk around the Village of La Jolla, which included a visit to the Holiday Festival!
I found plenty of smiles and fun!
Look at all the Santa hats!Photos were snapping at the Kiwanis Santa’s Village. Was that dog naughty or nice?La Jolla Youth Robotics had a cool demonstration table.A sophisticated robot created by Overclocked, Team 2485, a FIRST Robotics Competition team from Francis Parker School in San Diego.Table featuring Young Entrepreneurs Club. The grumpy, grouchy, grievous green Grinch has invaded San Diego this weekend during December Nights!
Happy people beware! I spotted the Grinch all over the place as I walked around Balboa Park during San Diego’s epic holiday event!
Several cynical Grinches view visitors to December Nights from a vendor’s booth.Once again, the Grinch is trying to steal Christmas at the Old Globe theatre! He seems very persistent.Oh, my! The Grinch is peering over the Old Globe’s gift shop!Thank goodness! That’s just a watercolor painting by Spanish Village artist Gabriel Stockton!Now a grinning green Grinch has invaded the Festival of Trees inside the Casa del Prado!The sneaky Grinch has managed to hide inside a Christmas tree!No Grinch hiding here that I can find.The Grinch wouldn’t dare hang out around this big, happy Santa bear at the Japanese Friendship Garden!Does the Grinch work for the City of San Diego? Once again, San Diego’s Community Christmas Tree in Balboa Park has been completely ignored or forgotten.There’s so much joy and happiness at December Nights, I can’t imagine the Grinch would linger here.Santa Claus at the International Cottages is working on expanding his jolly belly.These merry Santa helpers are ready to fend off the Grinch with their sticks.My heart skipped a beat when I thought this was a green Grinch. It’s actually a happy Christmas tree!Happy Holidays in Balboa Park!Don’t look so worried, Santa. I think you’re safe.Oh, no!

Hey, San Diego, would you like to Light the World this holiday season? Head on down to Old Town San Diego this month and visit the Giving Machine!
The Giving Machine is located on Twiggs Street, near Old Town Trolley Tours, beside the parking lot opposite the Cygnet Theatre. The machine might be mistaken for a typical vending machine, but when you operate it, a charity of your choice benefits!
Charities that benefit when you use the Giving Machine include Save the Children, Catholic Charities, Corazon de Vida, Birthline of San Diego, Gently Hugged, and Mentors International. Struggling people, including the homeless, are helped locally and around the world.
Donations that you can make range from $5 to $120. I was told that donating $20 for a live chicken is a popular choice. There are places in this world where an egg-laying chicken would make a big difference to a seriously impoverished family.
I learned that the machine has been up for two days now, and has already had 209 transactions for a total of $16,000 in giving. The Giving Machine will be operating in Old Town through December, 2024.
I also learned that these Giving Machines can be found around the nation, including another in Irvine, California. It’s a project of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, so it’s no surprise the machine is located a short distance from the Mormon Battalion Historic Site in Old Town.
Whatever you might believe, certainly compassion is very important. The Golden Rule is universal.
This is one fun and easy way to help others! Take a photo by the nearby Christmas tree, too!
By the way–San Diego Padres ace pitcher Joe Musgrove and ex-Chargers superstar Eric Weddle will be at a big ribbon cutting ceremony at the Giving Machine this coming Tuesday at noon! It’s rumored Santa Claus will be present, too!

Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) was celebrated today by the Old Globe in San Diego’s Balboa Park. Lots of family-friendly activities and theatrical performances were enjoyed by the public in the Old Globe’s outdoor Copley Plaza!
I enjoyed the first performance of this magical event: actors portraying Mexican folk passed through the audience, came to a grave in front of a beautiful Día de los Muertos altar, and summoned the spirit of a deceased loved one. The spirit came and danced with them, before finally departing.
The event would go on to feature other performances, including a puppet play and Drummers Without Borders. My camera captured their smiles before I headed off, as you can see in the final two photos.

Hundreds of smiling people participated in the Walk4ALZ 2024 walk this morning in Balboa Park. The annual event is a fundraiser for Alzheimer’s San Diego, a local nonprofit organization that helps many of the approximately 100,000 San Diegans living with dementia. Every dollar that was raised will stay in San Diego County.
I took these photographs as I walked near the group. I saw teams holding signs, many families in support of loved ones who have Alzheimer’s, folks along the route cheering on the walkers, and some fun costumes, too!

That’s the phrase for the day if you’re a San Diego Padres fan!
A home game . . . National League Division Series tied 1-1 . . . The greatly disliked (I almost used another stronger word) Dodgers in town . . . Petco Park is going to go completely bonkers once the game begins!
Around the time the gates opened, the Beat Los Angeles sentiment was visible on streets and sidewalks in the Gaslamp Quarter and near the ballpark. As were other optimistic messages!

Before today’s free Sunday afternoon concert, I spotted a very young man sitting at the Spreckels Organ in Balboa Park. San Diego Civic Organist Raúl Prieto Ramírez, one of the world’s finest organists, was teaching young Aaron how to play!
Aaron is a frequent concert goer, I learned, who also likes sketching while sitting in the audience. You can see a pic of him posing with Raúl on the Spreckels Organ Society website here!
Will Aaron grow up to be a future San Diego Civic Organist? It wouldn’t surprise me!
I just want to say how fortunate San Diego is to have Raúl in our midst. Energetic, always smiling, enhancing our city’s culture, bringing beautiful music every week to one and all.

On the streets outside Petco Park, before today’s Postseason game, not only did I see dozens of different shirts that root for the Padres, but some of the designs were created by the fans themselves! For example, the Crone Zone shirt (and sign) above!
I also spotted fans with homemade signs to hold up in the ballpark during the game. Lots of creative swag chains, too!
