On a clear morning, viewed from Pantoja Park, many of the highest buildings in downtown San Diego shine brightly. Particularly those that rise north and northwest of the park.
These photos that I took today provide a glimpse.

Shark street art on a utility box at the corner of Shelter Island Drive and Rosecrans Street.
This morning I headed to Point Loma to visit three sites participating in the San Diego Architectural Foundation’s 2019 OPEN HOUSE SAN DIEGO. All three are located in a neighborhood at the foot of Shelter Island–an area once populated by many Portuguese fishermen. I think you might enjoy a look at Little Portugal’s history and some of its landmarks.
Before I sort through all those photographs, however, please enjoy others photos I took during a fun walk down Shelter Island Drive, from Rosecrans Streets to the recently improved Shelter Island boat ramp.

The Union Bank on the corner of Shelter Island Drive and Rosecrans Street has a colorful mural near its entrance. Tuna fishermen with poles out on the Pacific Ocean.Plaque describes the above artwork. Sean Wells – Art Teacher. Mural completed Spring 2010 depicting historic scenes of the Point Loma region.As I began walking along Shelter Island Drive, a gigantic yacht passed down the street!A few benches overlook a corner of the Shelter Island Yacht Basin. It’s a nice place to sit in the sun and relax.I spotted this cool stained glass panel in a window of The Marlin Club.I remember seeing several huge fish suspended here years ago, before I began taking photos for this blog.Someone bikes past a huge boat lift at the Shelter Island Boatyard.Those yachts being repaired seem to be up in the sky!People bicycle near the Ocean Song sculpture in front of Humphreys Half Moon Inn. This cool public art was created by Alber De Matteis.As I approach San Diego Bay, I see the Pacific Portal sculpture by local artist James T. Hubbell.I’ve arrived at the recently improved and enlarged Shelter Island Launch Ramp. Many recreational watercraft enter San Diego Bay here.Looks like these guys backing their boat into the water intend to spend the day fishing.Someone hangs out nearby, sitting among beached dinghies.Looking across the boat launch basin, the San Diego downtown skyline in the distance.I see some sailboats racing in the distance, between here and Harbor Island.Here comes an amphibious SEAL tour boat. Tourists float out toward the entrance of San Diego Bay, then turn around near the submarines at Naval Base Point Loma.These cool vessels drive right out of the water and up onto the boat ramp!After walking a bit, I’m nearer those small sailboats that were racing in the distance.Some people by the rocky shore watch even more distant sailboats with binoculars.My small camera zooms and just manages to capture a nice image.Look! Here comes San Salvador, the Maritime Museum of San Diego’s amazing Spanish galleon replica!Now that is one very cool sight!

Taking the ferry from downtown San Diego to Coronado is like crossing into a dream. It’s a journey to a magical place. The island is like a small, carefree paradise.
I had a variety of photos from my ferry ride and walk yesterday, so I thought I’d try converting a few into oil paintings! I cropped selected images then used the Oilify artistic filter that comes with the GIMP graphics editor.
It was a beautiful misty winter day.
Those are sea lions lying on a buoy in the bay!

Today I enjoyed a short walk in Coronado. I strolled along the edge of San Diego Bay, from the Coronado Ferry Landing to Tidelands Park, then turned around and made my way back. The overcast winter day was chilly and even a few raindrops fell.
I was in the mood to walk slowly, while gazing across the gray water.
As I began south, a flock of seagulls stood preening on a strip of wet sand below the rocks near the Coronado Island Marriott Resort. From time to time gulls stretched their wings. Some would suddenly launch into the sky. I paused to watch and take photos.
When I reached Tidelands Park, I spotted a great blue heron and a few shorebirds that I believe were marbled godwits.
I took a few random photos of this scenic stretch of the Bayshore Bikeway as I made my way back to catch the ferry. San Diego’s skyline beckoned in the distance.

The following series of photos represents a span of time from about 45 minutes before sunset to about 10 minutes after sunset. I took these shots this evening.
I lifted my camera periodically as I sat on a bench beside Tuna Harbor, on San Diego’s beautiful Embarcadero.
It was interesting to watch how the light would subtly change.
Our world’s inexorable journey through space and time gradually transformed Tuna Harbor’s fishing boats, the water and the sky, and various downtown buildings.
I took these photos as I sat working on a new short story. I’m pretty sure it will be titled Light at the Edges.
I hope the story will be finished to my satisfaction in the near future. When the words feel right, I’ll publish them here.
Hydro-foiling GC32 catamarans race across San Diego Bay during the 2018 Extreme Sailing Series.
What an amazing day out on San Diego Bay! Here come a bunch of cool photos!
I began my walk at the Maritime Museum of San Diego, where the Star of India sail crew was getting ready for their ocean journey next month. I then walked along San Diego Bay to Harbor Island to view a variety of events during this weekend’s 2018 Extreme Sailing Series.
As I arrived at Harbor Island, kids were racing O’pen BIC boats in an Un-Regatta. Next came an exhibition and race by world-class kite boarders. A lack of sufficient wind made the Element Sports Kite Boarding Invitational a real challenge for those great athletes.
At two o’clock the main event began. Seven hydro-foiling GC32 catamarans competed in the San Diego leg of this year’s Extreme Sailing Series. I watched the first race, then, while devouring a yummy quesadilla from a food truck, enjoyed a look around the Race Village and its US Sailing Education Zone.

The Star of India will sail next month upon the Pacific Ocean. Seven teams would participate this weekend on San Diego Bay.The first race has begun! One catamaran tips upward in the wind, as its crew tries to obtain maximum speed.Team Mexico works hard to reach the finish line before the other competitors.Element Spark Compass, the United States team, is a wild card entry for this weekend. The members raced really well, even though they have very limited GC32 experience.The fast catamarans maneuver up the course into the sun. The wind was a bit disappointing today due to the mild Santa Ana-like weather this weekend.Someone on Harbor Island points toward one of the racing teams.They’ve navigated around a race mark buoy and are coming back downwind.Here they come again! Alinghi, the Swiss team, seems to always be in front. Their crew members have won multiple America’s Cup titles.Red Bull Sailing Team is tacking on San Diego Bay.Here comes the Element Spark Compass catamaran! The crew works hard to capture every inch of wind.Lots of action aboard Red Bull’s GC32 catamaran.Sails of many types were spotted today out on beautiful San Diego Bay!

Part of a cool mural on a building behind the Park ‘N Fly Lot 1 on Pacific Highway.
Today I got off from work a little early, so I decided to use my extra time for a walk from the Middletown trolley station down to the Embarcadero.
My main intention was to get photographs of a long mural I’ve glimpsed while driving along Pacific Highway near San Diego International Airport. The mural is a fair distance from the street, on the back of an old building behind the Park ‘N Fly Lot 1.
I snapped some photos of the cool mural, but as you can see, the results were not all that great. After doing some internet searching, I still know nothing about this artwork.
My walk turned west on Laurel Street as a series of airplanes came in for landings overhead. My eyes moved right and left searching for interesting sights, but nothing struck my fancy until I came to the big white anchor in the grassy median at the intersection of Harbor Drive and Laurel Street.
I vaguely recall learning something about this historical anchor–where it came from–but now when I do some searching I come up with nothing. The big anchor has been a landmark occupying that spot for as long as I can remember.
My leisurely walk south along the Embarcadero stalled when I came to the Maritime Museum of San Diego. I’m a member, so naturally I had to enjoy the elegant passenger deck of the steam ferry Berkeley to do some quiet reading. When I noticed through a window that the sun was about to slip behind clouds, I ventured outside and took more photos.
The photograph of Sea Shepherd’s vessel Farley Mowat reminds me that I blogged about their mission to protect the critically endangered vaquita porpoise a couple years ago.
My walk then resumed, and I proceeded along the water to Broadway Pier.
