Drift into a weird place at the Timken Museum!

At the front desk of the Timken Museum of Art, I learned some visitors really love the museum’s current exhibition Drift, while others hate it. I’m not entirely sure what my own reaction is.

Drift was created by the Timken’s summer artist in residence Margaret Noble. As the exhibition webpage explains: Drift brings together sculpture, sound, and moving images to explore the ways in which space and perception are experienced. Drawing inspiration from François Boucher’s Lovers in a Park (1758), Noble reinterprets Rococo ideals by introducing motion and layered context through reverse glass animation, revealing and disrupting the painting’s serene, ornamental narrative.

During the unsettling video, thick black paint creeps into the frame of Lovers in a Park in unexpected ways. Black birds (crows?) fly through the Rococo painting, as does a drone. A robot, a sinister masked face, ants and a rat appear. Tiny human figures tumble into consuming blackness. The intruding images tend not to be pleasant. The video feels subversive, juvenile, but not entirely so. To me, the effect is mostly experimental and weird.

Does the artist mean to say contemporary thinking is dark and cynical, and opposed to the Rococo ideals of pure beauty and love? Contemporary art often seems that way.

Perhaps the creepiest part of the video was when the two lovers became slowly covered by a big black blob. From it a claw-like hand emerged, reaching toward the passing peasant girl. (Reminding me of the black symbiote in Spider-Man!)

In the Timken Museum’s atrium, people can use black cut-out shapes to create their own altered Lovers in a Park. The figures visitors are provided with are less creepy and include butterflies, dragonflies and dogs.

What does it say about the artist’s intentions and broader human nature–that the video is very different from what museum visitors can happily assemble?

More great art in Oceanside’s Artist Alley!

It’s been well over a year since I visited the Artist Alley in downtown Oceanside. I walked through it again today!

Look what my camera found!

Most of this art must be fairly new, because it was painted in places where earlier murals existed.

(The two murals just inside the entrance of the multi-suite building that opens into the alley might have been there a long time–I don’t know. My first four photos are of those.)

I love how the artwork changes in the alley over time. Every time I walk through it I discover new creations!

Oceanside’s very cool, very magical Artist Alley can be entered directly south of the city library and civic center. Simply cross Pier View Way and you’ll find it!

Willy Wonka and Oompa-Loompas at Comic-Con!

Starbucks at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront will be home to Willy Wonka and his Oompa-Loompa pals during Comic-Con 2026!

Local artist Shirish Villaseñor (@shirishtheartist) is now painting the windows of Starbucks with movie characters adapted from my favorite book when I was a boy: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory!

Willy Wonka, as he slowly materializes, is holding the Golden Ticket! Perhaps you, too, can sample an Everlasting Gobstopper!

I hope no naughty children are nearby!

Mortal Kombat painted outside Comic-Con!

The windows of Sweet Things Frozen Yogurt are being painted for Comic-Con again!

Shirish Villaseñor (@shirishtheartist) decorates these windows every year with a different pop culture theme. You can find Sweet Things outside the Hilton Bayfront hotel near the San Diego Convention Center.

For 2026? Images from Mortal Kombat!

Shirish was just getting started today. How many Mortal Kombat characters do you recognize?

Once these windows are done, she’ll be painting the windows of nearby Starbucks with a different mystery theme!

UPDATE!

Next day photos…

Where the Sea Meets the Sky art exhibit!

If you love art that portrays coastal California landscapes and wildlife, you’ll love a free exhibition now showing in Balboa Park’s always wonderful Spanish Village Art Center. Simply step into Gallery 21!

The exhibition is titled Where the Sea Meets the Sky.

Three artists have beautiful pieces on display. I forgot to ask, but it appeared most or all of the art is available for purchase.

The work of Ira Cosmos, Elena Miller and Karen Haub is truly eye-catching.

Ira Cosmos is Ukrainian born. She has contributed to the Art for Ukraine initiative. I noticed today that at least one of her beautiful paintings is dedicated to Ukraine.

During my visit, I was personally drawn to the ceramics created by Elena Miller. They’re organic, complex, full of life.

Approach Gallery 21 and you’ll notice a huge butterfly outside!

Friendly local artist Karen Haub was present and working on a canvas when I poked my head into the gallery. Her paintings are full of life, too, and bright California sunshine!

She described her plein air coastal landscapes as in the style of California Impressionism.

Make sure to visit Balboa Park’s Spanish Village Art Center this week. The exhibition ends soon.

Where the Sea Meets the Sky continues in Gallery 21 through July 13, 2026.

Horse racing mural at Del Mar Fairgrounds.

In my previous blog post, I shared photos of a colorful fair mural at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. It decorates one side of the long tunnel under the horse racing track. The tunnel connects the Grandstand with the infield.

Now I’ll share photographs of the mural that decorates the tunnel’s opposite side. Also painted by artist Tom Fagan, it depicts the history of horse racing at the racetrack!

The Del Mar Racetrack was added to the fairgrounds in 1936 by the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club. Founding member Bing Crosby led the effort. You know, he who famously sings “Where the turf meets the surf down at old Del Mar. Take a plane, take a train, take a car. There is a smile on every face and a winner in each race…”

Back in the day, Hollywood movie stars and celebrities would flock to the races, including frequent visitor and avid horseplayer Jimmy Durante. The mural shows some of that.

Students paint boxes outside Central Library!

Students attending e3 Civic High were painting an electrical box on a sidewalk next to San Diego’s downtown Central Library today!

The charter school is actually located within the Central Library. It serves grades 9-12 with a mission to “Engage, Educate, and Empower” students through a partnership with the library.

After looking at the young artists’ progress painting the San Diego skyline, I walked around the corner and found another box that is nearly finished!

A new City Workshops mural in City Heights!

I discovered this cool mural during my most recent walk in City Heights. I took photographs and wondered about it.

A little research shows the mural was painted several months ago at City Workshops, a shared woodshop at 3615 University Avenue.

According to their Instagram page, City Workshops offers dedicated individual bench areas and shared big machines like wood saws, routers, sanders, planers and laser cutters. They are now accepting long-term tenants.

Notice the many artist signatures in one of my photos.

Sunshine and flowers in Solana Beach!

Here’s a bit of colorful art you might spy while walking down a sidewalk in Solana Beach. You can find it at 129 North Highway 101.

Solana Beach’s coastal sunshine brightens a landscape filled with many different flowers native to California. Flowers include Sea Dahlia, Leafy Daisy, Morning Glory, Fiesta Flower, Prickly Pear, Padre’s Shooting Star, Fiddleneck, Frankenia, Southern Pink, Fuchsia-Flowered Gooseberry, Matilija Poppy, California Rose and California Poppy.

The artist signature indicates this beautifully painted scene was created by Bailey Valdivieso.

Children together with nature in Golden Hill!

This happy mural was painted in 2017 at the Golden Hill Recreation Center. It depicts children together with nature.

Members of the community and volunteers with I Love a Clean San Diego came together on Coastal Cleanup Day to paint the colorful art. It decorates a retaining wall behind the center near the playground. You can see a photograph of the event and people working on the mural here.

Despite a little vandalism, the mural remains bright and beautiful almost ten years later. Flowers, butterflies, a hummingbird, coyote and rabbit populate a world where children jump and play.
