Today I headed down to Imperial Beach to enjoy the Sun and Sea Festival. The annual summer event is famous for its popular sand sculpture contest near the pier. You might’ve seen photos I took in past years.
In 2018 the theme for the sand sculpture competition was Superheroes In The Sand.

I hope Thanos doesn’t have that gauntlet on.Watch out Thanos! Hulk is finally really angry and ready to smash.The Coastal Carvers were creating the IB Bears. I’m not sure how exactly this fits with the superhero theme.Howie’s Crew was creating Gotham City out of sand. I see the Bat Signal and the Bat Cave!And I see Wayne Manor, too!Scooby Doo is a superhero, right? The Guardians of the Sandlot had scenes from that favorite cartoon. Here’s the Mystery Machine!And here’s a super scary creature! It’s probably an old disgruntled lighthouse keeper in a yellow slicker somehow cleverly disguised as a big monster. Just my wild guess.According to the San Diego Sand Castles, you don’t need a cape.Wonder Woman has no cape, nor She-Ra.A local guy working on sand art that celebrates She-Ra. You’ll see why, shortly.A variety of heroes gathered in Imperial Beach the week before 2018 San Diego Comic-Con.Archisand was crafting a sandcastle fantasy and a beautiful sleepy face.There were sand sculptures on either side of the Imperial Beach Pier. Lots of surfers out today, too.Sandytales was creating Dreaming, an imaginative sand sculpture with another sleepy face and whimsical castle.Here’s the castle and a smile. Creating that looks like fun!Team Sandstorm was creating their sand sculpture just north of the IB Pier.Forever Heroes. It’s a big Purple Cross.Sand spheres are sculpted to become helmeted war heroes.Many heroes behind the medal.The Sandcastle Man Team was creating a fantastic Star Wars setting.A sand sculpture rendition of a far distant world. Rebels and Resistance.The I.B. Posse created a new chest emblem for Superman. It features a firefighter’s helmet.Superman entered a phone booth in my very first photo . . . then emerged as a true hero firefighter!Here are some hero lifeguards.Why do several local sand artists like the heroine She-Ra?This sculpture by the Sand Squirrels honors a former member. I believe her name was Shera. Her surviving brother works with sand for the first time.My Heroes, by the I.B. Six teams of firefighters from California play stickball in Little Italy on a fine summer Sunday.
My walk today began on Cortez Hill and proceeded down through Little Italy until I reached the Embarcadero. I then headed south along the water.
It’s a simple walk that never gets old.
Good times on Columbia Street.Bayside Fire Station No. 2 is finally open!A friendly firefighter told me the engines arrived on Friday!Volunteers pull a huge rope together on the deck of Star of India.Climbing up into clouds of sail.Visitors to the Maritime Museum of San Diego exit from the Soviet submarine.More museum volunteers handling ropes and chains by the water.The museum’s longboat was out on San Diego Bay. An overcast but very pleasant start to the morning.Two huge ships at the Cruise Ship Terminal. The superyacht Attessa IV and impressive U. S. Coast Guard cutter Healy (WAGB-20).Someone rides a scooter along Broadway Pier past the Coast Guard’s newest, most advanced polar icebreaker. I haven’t spotted any ice off San Diego!Family boards a Coronado ferry near Broadway Pier.Many people were out on the Embarcadero today enjoying wonderful San Diego.America, replica of the racing yacht that won the first America’s Cup, cruises past.And so does a sailboat.Walking and sitting above the shining water.Creating music.Out on a harbor cruise.Simply standing by the blue water.An easy float through the Marriott Marina.The San Diego Symphony is set up and ready to go for their outdoor summer concerts at Embarcadero Marina Park South.Bayside Summer Nights will feature lots of great concerts, and fireworks.On the water in a boat, and above it on a pier.I see the Coronado Island Marriott Resort beyond those fishermen.And here’s my favorite Coronado ferry, Silvergate. It usually departs near the San Diego Convention Center.

Public artwork is being installed outside the new City of San Diego Bayside Fire Station No. 2, at the corner of Cedar Street and Pacific Highway
Some cool public artwork is rising at the corner of Cedar Street and Pacific Highway, right next to the new Bayside Fire Station No. 2 in Little Italy!
For the past couple weeks I’ve been watching the unusual sculpture slowly grow, like flowers and vines sprouting from a base of urban concrete. And, according to what I’ve read, that’s exactly the effect that’s intended. The artists Ingram Ober, Marisól Rendón-Ober and Chuck Moffit are known for their unusual, thought-provoking creations, which are often sublime or humorous. The old Victrola horn-like brass elements of the sculpture will broadcast gentle music, which will contrast with the noise of the nearby streets and sudden fire engine sirens.
I can’t wait to see (and listen to) this artwork when it is completed!
Construction of the new Bayside Fire Station No. 2 appears to be almost complete.Twisting metal structures rise up like whipping fire hoses.Gentle music will play out of the brass trumpet-like forms.A red vine seems to be growing around those two horns! This might make a nice place to sit when finished.When completed, this new public art should to be pretty interesting!Cool art seems to be growing out the sidewalk in front of the new Bayside Fire Station in San Diego!

During my walk this morning through downtown San Diego I saw numerous firefighters and fire engines participating in a Sunday fire drill. It was a simulation of an emergency in a high-rise.

An important event in San Diego history took place over the Labor Day weekend. It involved a firefighter hero who saved lives during 9/11, his two sons, and the game of stickball.

The 2017 Labor Day Stickball Tournament in Little Italy was one of the largest in its 19 year history with a field of 16 teams, four from New York and one from Tampa Bay, Florida. New York transplant Bob Ortiz and a group of players brought the Bronx-style tradition of street baseball to California in the early 1990s, later passing the torch to brothers Louie and Joey Centanni.
This year’s tournament held a special meaning for the San Diego and New York stickball communities, bringing the return of Skylar and Austin Mercado, sons of former Emperor’s Stickball League President Steve Mercado. Mercado and his family brought the team to San Diego from the Bronx in 2001 when the boys were 6 and 2 years old. The Mercado family made a lasting impression on many San Diegans, including SD City Firefighter and Stickball League Commissioner Willie Blas and Fire Marshal Mark George. After saying their goodbyes, Steve returned to NYC and went straight to work on 9/11, courageously saving lives. He was one of 12 of 13 from Engine 40 and Ladder 35 to lose their lives on that day, along with over 400 NYC first responders.
This weekend, Skylar and Austin Mercado brought the legacy of their Dad and Grandfather to Stickball in San Diego. Their team, the Tampa Chargers, was undefeated going into the Championship Game on Monday but could not best the local Sultans of Swat, who took home the trophy this year. We hope the Mercados experienced the outpouring of love and support for these two fine young men, their family, and the entire NYC community of heroes.
So that Steve and all heroes on that day will be NEVER FORGOTTEN, Mark and Willie as sponsored by 4 Heroes 4 Life and Veteran Adventures will be hosting a 9/11 NEVER FORGOTTEN Charity Golf Tournament and Community Extravaganza on September 11. Proceeds of the event will benefit the Steven Mercado Foundation, and funds for Engine 40 and Ladder 35, and the NYC Emergency Fund. A simple but elegant old firehouse stands in downtown San Diego at the corner of Columbia Street and Cedar Street. Those who step inside are in for a very big surprise.
The San Diego Firehouse Museum today occupies what was once an active fire station–San Diego Fire Station No. 6. Located in Little Italy, this unique museum isn’t large, but it’s crammed with so much cool stuff and so much fascinating history, you could easily spend an hour enjoying the many exhibits. There are shiny red vintage fire engines, a steamer equipped with a huge boiler, antique hand pumpers, firefighting apparatus of every sort, helmets, badges, a big display of model vehicles, historical photographs . . . and just lots and lots of firefighting artifacts, dating as far back as the mid 1800s. Much of what you’ll see represents the history of firefighting in San Diego; other objects in the museum come from fire departments around the United States.
Here are some photos which I took during a recent visit. The volunteer on duty was very friendly and provided some interesting historical information. I learned that private events can be held in the old firehouse, and that kids love having birthday parties among all the fire engines. Museum admission is only 3 dollars for adults and 2 dollars for children and seniors. Quite a bargain!
The San Diego Firehouse Museum is manned by friendly firefighter volunteers. It’s located in old Fire Station No. 6 at 1572 Columbia Street in Little Italy.A look inside the Firehouse Museum, which is absolutely jam-packed with cool historical exhibits. Kids love this place.Two of the many vintage fire engines in the old firehouse. The museum’s walls are lined with interesting objects that tell the story of firefighting since the mid-1800s.The San Diego Firehouse Museum was founded in 1962 and is operated by the nonprofit Pioneer Hook and Ladder Company.A closer look at a 1914 Seagrave Pumper. During my visit, I learned that fire engines are also called pumpers.Even more old fire engines can be seen in a second room inside old Fire Station No. 6.Water pressure controls on the side of one pumper.This white fire engine was stationed at the 1915 Panama-California Exposition in Balboa Park. It can be seen in old photographs and postcards.Another look at the historic 1915 Panama-California Exposition fire engine. This section of the Firehouse Museum is a bit dark and close, which makes it hard to take a good wide photo.This glass display case in the museum contains all sorts of old fire fighter helmets and protective headgear.One corner of the Firehouse Museum showcases many old fire insurance marks which were affixed to buildings. One of the San Diego Fire Department’s two firefighting helicopters fills its water tank using a hose lowered into the San Diego River in Mission Valley.
I was lucky late this afternoon to capture some cool action pics! After work, I was eating at Jack in the Box in Hazard Center when I saw a helicopter swooping rapidly down toward the nearby San Diego River. A hose was dangling underneath, so I knew it was a firefighting helicopter arriving to suck up some river water!
I hurried down to the center of the action to watch and snap a few photographs. It’s the first time I’ve witnessed this activity up close.
Someone on the river path said there was a fire to the northwest in Linda Vista, but I couldn’t see any smoke. I watched five different instances of helicopters filling their tanks, then the action ceased. The fire must’ve been quickly contained.
A wildfire must be nearby because here comes a firefighting helicopter swooping rapidly down over Mission Center Road and the raised trolley tracks toward a wide spot in the San Diego River!The chopper slows and carefully makes its descent in order to suck water into its belly tank to eventually drop on a wildfire.The air from the rotor blades causes spray to fly up from the surface of the San Diego River. Several joggers and walkers on the nearby paths stopped to watch.The long hose quickly sucks a good quantity of water from the river. The pilot is highly skilled, hovering the helicopter close above the water, steady as a rock.A couple minutes later one of the San Diego County Sheriff’s three firefighting helicopters arrives! You can see the external belly tank underneath the chopper’s body!This firefighting helicopter got so close to the water I had to hold my breath. These brave hero pilots are amazingly precise.ASTREA is the Sheriff’s Department aviation unit. Up their aircraft goes, quickly swinging overhead and heading to the northwest. Someone thought there was a fire in Linda Vista, but I didn’t see smoke from the bottom of Mission Valley in any direction.A San Diego Fire Department chopper has sucked up more water from the river and flies in a big hurry again toward the northwest! The fire must have been small, because the action above the river didn’t seem to last for more than 15 minutes.

Comic book characters promote Webtoon (a digital comics platform) in the Gaslamp during 2015 San Diego Comic-Con.
Yeah. San Diego Comic-Con has changed. What years ago was a small convention for dedicated comic book lovers has turned into a big insane Hollywood hype machine. Diehard fans and awestruck consumers geek out over every conceivable new entertainment, and promoters try to get Comic-Con goers to post photos on social media under a hundred different hashtags. It’s all about hyping an upcoming movie, a television show, a video game, a celebrity, a brand. It’s more than a bit ridiculous. It’s silly. It’s loud. It’s often superficial. And, if you don’t mind massive crowds, it can be exciting, wonderful, eye-opening and lots of fun!
So here’s one last blog post concerning huge glorious 2015 Comic-Con.
These photos mostly show riotous doings in downtown San Diego outside of the convention center. And all this fantastic contrived drama is concluded with a bit of actual nail-biting reality. Oh, my!

The Beast Rises! And so does the hype!Red-bereted soldiers from Colony television show march in file up Fifth Avenue through San Diego’s Gaslamp.The Colony troop files past shark head-wearing Sharknado 3 girls and an Outlander bagpiper! It’s complete mayhem.Uncle Sams on stilts with sharks through their chests add to the absurdity of the already ridiculous scene.Deliciously insane. You have to be here to believe it.I asked this lady about her cosplay. She said it was nothing in particular.A cool Dragon Ball Z poster in window of a Gaslamp eatery.Numerous zany Colonel Sanders sculptures placed about San Diego transmitted free Wi-Fi for Comic-Con visitors. KFC seems to have adopted an attention-getting marketing strategy.Cool Star Wars cosplay. These people want to Experience the Realm.Another cheerful Poison Ivy. All the fabricated hype and escapist fantasy is rudely interrupted by real sirens and flashing red lights!A kitchen grease fire broke out in a restaurant during Comic-Con on Saturday. The fire was on the 900 block of Fourth Avenue. Reality intervenes!Firefighters, dealing with a potentially serious crisis, provide unexpected nail-biting entertainment for one and all.

Today a small army of San Diego firefighters are volunteering to collect donations for the Burn Institute. The Burn Institute’s mission is to help the victims of severe burns recover from a devastating and very difficult situation. The organization has a strong focus on children. Be generous!

New Cisterra building rises behind Tony Gwynn statue at Petco Park in East Village.
As the local economy has improved, I’ve noticed a spate of new construction underway in downtown San Diego. Several skyscrapers are on the rise!
Last weekend I walked past the rapidly progressing Cisterra building which will overlook East Village. It stands just a block north of Petco’s Park at the Park. The future home of gigantic Sempra Energy, the high-rise is being built directly next to one of San Diego’s most interesting old buildings: Fire Station 4. The beautiful little firehouse is San Diego’s oldest, dating from the 1930’s. Once the shiny new skyscraper is completed, the two buildings side-by-side will create quite a contrast!
