Illuminations: mosaic art near Imperial Beach Pier.

Those who approach the Imperial Beach Pier through nearby Portwood Pier Plaza might notice patterned glass tiles on curving, low beachside walls. Illuminations is the title of this colorful mosaic artwork, commissioned by the San Diego Unified Port District. The beautiful public art was created by artist Mary Lynn Dominguez in 1999.

Twenty four years later some of the tiles are damaged or missing, but the overall effect remains vibrant and cheerful. During my visit to Imperial Beach yesterday, I bent down to take several photographs of Illuminations. Then I sat down on a bench and gazed out at the ocean.

A couple years ago I posted a blog about the surfboard benches that fill Portwood Pier Plaza. You can see some of the tiles in those photos.

The new Creekside Park in Mission Valley.

A beautiful new park has opened in Mission Valley. The linear Creekside Park, located inside Civita, is centered around an elevated walkway that stretches between Civita Park and Friars Road.

I walked the length of the park this afternoon, my camera at the ready. It’s a green, tranquil place that is inviting to those who love the sunny outdoors.

Sign shows the San Diego River watershed. Runoff from the large Civita community passes from Civita Creek through Creekside Park, part of an extensive natural filtration system.

Heading south with a kids play structure ahead.

Colorful mosaics with a river theme can be enjoyed around and near this large planter. Created by La Jolla artist Jane Wheeler.

Beautiful sunrise above San Diego River.

I walked in Mission Valley early this morning.

As I passed down Mission Center Road above the San Diego River, the rising sun illuminated low clouds to the east, and beautiful colors reflected from calm water.

Our amazing Balboa Park forever in transition.

One of the most wonderful aspects of Balboa Park is its dynamism. Every day, with every walk, new discoveries come into view.

This evening, as the sun cast lengthening shadows, I wandered about photographing a park that is always in transition, forever new.

A new exhibition of Korean art is coming to the San Diego Museum of Art.

One end of the Botanical Building’s steel structure has been renovated.

New love, perhaps?

Inflating the huge screen at the Spreckels Organ Pavilion for Silent Movie Night.

What’s coming next at the Casa Del Prado Theater?

Painting patio tiles at Spanish Village Art Center.

Flowers fall away as new flowers appear..

Walking into the light through one wonderful park.

Sea life murals at Ocean Beach Hotel.

Beautiful murals depicting sea life surround the base of the Ocean Beach Hotel and its parking lot. Painted this year by local artists Carly Ealey and Christopher Konecki, the artwork stretches along Newport Avenue and Abbott Street.

The other day I walked beside long, low walls and the hotel building itself taking these photographs. You might enjoy them!

Beautiful silk art in Balboa Park’s Spanish Village!

Gallery 21 in Balboa Park’s Spanish Village Art Center is now hosting a show full of very beautiful silk art, created by members of the San Diego Silk Guild.

During my visit to the gallery this afternoon, I was interested to learn about the different types of art that can be created using silk. I was shown clothing, scarves, paintings on silk, wax batiks, Japanese shibori, botanical printing, unique sculptures . . . far more than my astonished brain could easily comprehend!

As you can see, this silk artwork can be very colorful. Some of the techniques produce a degree of subtlety and complexity one might not expect.

Looking for something beautiful to take home? Most of the pieces are for sale.

I’m afraid I forgot to take a photo of the sign in front of the gallery, but I believe the show continues until mid-August. You might want to drop by next weekend!

Beautiful garden railway runs in Balboa Park!

Perhaps you remember the Centennial Railway Garden, which was built in a small outdoor space at the San Diego Model Railroad Museum in 2015 for the centennial of Balboa Park. (You can see it here.) That model train layout is now history. Those 3D printed models of Balboa Park buildings have been replaced with beautiful handmade buildings that represent the late 1800s Victorian era.

Check out these photographs of the new Freight and Flora: A Garden Railway Exhibit!

A company called Applied Imagination constructed and donated the awesome little buildings. You can view other similar garden railways on their website!

Positive mural painted at Waterfront Park!

Several weeks ago a colorful new mural was painted in Waterfront Park in San Diego. You can find it on the east side of the restrooms, which are located a few steps south of the County Administration Building.

Diversity is a fact. Inclusion is an act! A positive message of human kindness is conveyed by the happy artwork.

The creators of this mural are REVISION (@revision_sandiego) and Hanna Gundrum (@littlehouseink).

Create and display beauty at the museum!

Would you like to hang one of your drawings at the San Diego Museum of Art?

A fun activity can be enjoyed by visitors to the O’Keeffe and Moore exhibition at the San Diego Museum of Art in Balboa Park!

Seashells, conches and smooth river stones scattered among bits of paper and colored pencils wait for inspired people.

Will your work of art rival the nearby masterpieces created by American painter Georgia O’Keeffe and British sculptor Henry Moore?

Nobody will know until you try!

Volunteers make Shelter Island more beautiful!

Shelter Island is one of the most beautiful spots in sunny San Diego.

Today, as I walked along Shelter Island’s linear Shoreline Park, I noticed two volunteers working around colorful blooms in a flower bed. They were making the bayside park even more beautiful!

Theresa and Steve are both members of the Point Loma Association’s volunteer Mean Green Team. When they saw me taking photographs of the flowers, they immediately greeted me with big smiles.

I learned that they and other Mean Green Team members maintain about ten garden spaces along Shelter Island. They not only work to make this part of Point Loma more beautiful, but they brighten the world that we all live in.

I learned Theresa was born in China, grew up in Taiwan, and is very grateful to live in the United States. She’s an author! One of her books, titled Americans the Beautiful, provides portraits of many wonderful friends. In her book’s Acknowledgments, she writes: Thank you for showing and sharing how you applied yourself to achieve wonderful dreams for humanity, creativity, entrepreneurship, independence and inspiration.

As a cooking teacher, she has also has written a book titled Fairy Tale Soup: Traditional Chinese Recipes with Related Stories. It’s loaded with authentic recipes. By just reading a few pages, I’ve already learned a lot about Chinese culture and cooking!
