A little known, unmapped park in La Mesa.

There’s a small park in La Mesa that is little known and unmapped, even while hundreds of cars pass it by every day. This park doesn’t appear on Google Maps. There is no record of it on the internet. (Until now!)

According to a plaque near the center of the grassy park, embedded in a boulder among plants and flowers, this beautiful place is called George Felix Memorial Park.

It is located where La Mesa Boulevard meets University Avenue.

The old plaque reads:

DEDICATED IN MEMORY OF

GEORGE FELIX

1934 – 2002

IN RECOGNITION OF HIS COMMITMENT TO THE CITIZENS OF LA MESA THROUGH HIS TIRELESS EFFORTS FOR THE BETTERMENT OF THE COMMUNITY

DEDICATED JULY 17, 2002

Walk through the park and you’ll find this bench:

The Art of Science exhibit by UC San Diego.

The Art of Science is a photographic exhibit that explores the intersection of art and science. Curious eyes can view this cool exhibit inside the Sally T. WongAvery Library at UC San Diego, and at the Natural History Museum in Balboa Park.

The above fluorescent image of a pine tree stem cross-section was taken using a microscope. A stem that is scientifically examined might be a natural object, but like any art the resulting image is human-created, and can stimulate complex thought and emotion.

Many would say the above image is beautiful.

Do you consider it to be beautiful?

Why or why not?

Aren’t all things in this world potentially beautiful?

Is beauty entirely in the eye (or mind) of the beholder?

The Art of Science presents several intriguing images that appear simultaneously familiar and strange.

Here’s a web page that describes the exhibit, including: Now in its third year, the Library’s Art of Science contest celebrates the beauty that can emerge during scientific research at UC San Diego and beyond. This year, librarians and staff pre-selected items from the Research Data Collections repository. From these selected images, winners were chosen by the campus and the broader San Diego community via online voting.

Evening’s golden hour on the Embarcadero.

This series of photographs attempts to capture the magic of the “golden hour” along San Diego’s Embarcadero. This evening, about an hour before sunset, I walked south from the Maritime Museum of San Diego to Tuna Harbor.

As the sun approached the horizon across San Diego Bay, its light reflected from downtown’s many windows, creating a magical scene.

When San Diego’s blue sky contains big fluffy clouds, the drama is heightened! The weather experts say a small storm is approaching–showers late tonight.

A damp New Year’s Eve walk in Balboa Park.

It was a bit damp on the morning of New Year’s Eve in Balboa Park. It had rained overnight.

Big weekend crowds wouldn’t turn out until the afternoon, which made my early walk quiet and easy.

I wandered about randomly, turning right or left with no clear destination. The sky was overcast and the air was chilly.

Kids splashed in puddles. Artists were setting up along El Prado. Street musicians were already filling the air with music. Ambitious tourists pointed at new sights, as they explored San Diego’s crown jewel. The faces of friends were already smiling.

Even on a gray, damp, chilly morning, Balboa Park is very alive.

I’m sure in the coming year this special place will bring more joy to you and me.

Finding winter beauty in the Zoro Garden.

Visitors to Balboa Park during the winter might walk past the sunken Zoro Garden without seeing its enduring beauty.

On a cold, gray day late in the year, fallen leaves, puddles and a big patch of bare dirt might seem the main attraction of this stone grotto garden. But those who stroll down any of the winding pathways will discover small flowers, surprising color, and perhaps gleaming raindrops on bright green leaves.

Please enjoy these photographs. I took them today on a New Year’s Eve walk through Balboa Park. It had been drizzling earlier in the day.

Beautiful face on North Park street corner.

For many years, the face of Jimi Hendrix could be seen at the corner of Adams Avenue and Ohio Street in North Park. The cool spray painted art decorated a tattoo parlor. You can see a photo of that now vanished mural here.

During a recent walk, I noticed a new image has appeared in the same spot! Do you recognize this beautiful face? Leave a comment!

Flaming woman: hidden art in Middletown!

Extraordinarily beautiful public art can be found in a seldom seen corner of San Diego’s Middletown neighborhood. A tile mosaic appears to depict a fiery, spiritual woman, rising above surging waves of colorful artwork composed of individually made tiles.

The mosaic is mostly hidden in a cranny by Kettner Boulevard, east of the Middletown trolley station, near the bottom of stairs that climb to the pedestrian bridge over Interstate 5. Few people use these stairs.

I can find no information about this mysterious public art. I took these photos today. The last time I observed it, about four years ago, the mosaic hadn’t been completed. You can see those images here.

San Diego wonderland of Christmas ornaments!

One of San Diego’s most beautiful Christmas displays can be enjoyed inside the Timken Museum of Art in Balboa Park. Jewels of the Season has returned for 2023!

Over a thousand uniquely hand-crafted, jewel-like ornaments dangle from the museum ceiling, frame bright windows, fill display cases, and decorate a large Christmas tree. Visitors stepping into the Timken might feel they’ve entered a twinkling Christmas wonderland!

Thank goodness a lady at the Balboa Park Visitors Center reminded me of this annual display. I really loved last year’s Jewels of the Season and blogged about it. Check out that past blog post if you want to read about the artists and learn why these ornaments are so special!

The beautiful new Piazza Costanza in Little Italy.

On November 28, 2023, the new Piazza Costanza was dedicated in San Diego’s Little Italy neighborhood. The public space, filled with inviting tables and umbrellas, honors Margaret “Midge” Costanza, a trailblazer who became the first woman to hold the title of Assistant to a United States President.

Costanza was a daughter of Sicilian immigrants. Her illustrious career included fighting for the cause of civil rights. In 1978 she moved to Southern California and eventually worked in the San Diego District Attorney’s office advocating for senior citizens.

The beautiful Piazza Costanza is located at the corner of Columbia Street and Ash Street. It features a bronze bust, historical photographs and several inspiring quotes.

I walked through the piazza late yesterday afternoon…

It is the link from the present to the past that gives us a spirit to address the future.

I will never apologize for allowing people to participate in a government they help select and that belongs to them.

Human dignity is a right, not a privilege, a right inherited at birth.

Hubbell art at new SDSU Mission Valley river park!

Nine beautiful works of art by world-renowned sculptor James Hubbell can now be enjoyed by those visiting SDSU Mission Valley and its newly opened river park!

A soft opening of the river park at SDSU Mission Valley includes portions of the two-mile pedestrian and bike pathway that circles Snapdragon Stadium. Every quarter mile, medallions fashioned by James Hubbell and Emilie Ledieu (artist in residence at Hubbell’s Ilan-Lael Foundation) are embedded in the path marking the distance. Each mosaic medallion depicts a significant plant in local Native American Kumeyaay culture.

The first medallion you see in the above photograph can be found a very short distance west of the Stadium trolley station. The image represents Basket rush (Juncus textilis). It’s where our two mile walk will begin.

1/2 mile marker. Coffeeberry (Frangula californica).

3/4 mile marker. Mojave yucca (Yucca schidigera).

1 mile marker. Wild rose (Rosa californica).

1 1/4 mile marker. Coast live oak (Quercus agrifolia).

1 1/2 mile marker. Elderberry (Sambucus nigra).

1 3/4 mile marker. White sage (Salvia apiana).

2 mile marker. Eastwood manzanita (Arctostaphylos gladulosa).
