The famous Jessop’s Clock coming to Balboa Park!

The incredible, famous, one-of-a-kind 1907 Jessop’s Street Clock is coming to Balboa Park! The elegant clock, which was removed from Horton Plaza in 2019, has been given to the San Diego History Center, and it will be a centerpiece of their museum’s future redesign and renovation!

Did you know the several million dollar Jessop’s Street Clock was once San Diego’s biggest tourist attraction? Did you know that much of its movement is gold plated, and that it is decorated with precious gems mined in San Diego County? Did you know the one day the clock’s 300 moving parts stopped working was also the day its creator died?

Eight years ago I wrote this and more, and posted photographs of the incredible clock here.

Four years ago I posted a blog about its removal from Horton Plaza. See that here.

To learn more about the San Diego History Center’s planned renovation, and see renderings showing the 22 foot high Jessop Clock standing just inside the museum entrance, check out the San Diego History Center’s web page here. You’ll also view historical photographs of the clock from a century ago!

How awesome is this!

Postcard depicting San Diego’s Famous Clock, in a display case at San Diego History Center. Published circa 1946. SDHC Document Files Collection, Jessop Family. “It is the most completely jeweled and the finest made street clock in America, and the first clock of its kind ever built in a retail jewelry store…It took 15 months to build…”

Our amazing Balboa Park forever in transition.

One of the most wonderful aspects of Balboa Park is its dynamism. Every day, with every walk, new discoveries come into view.

This evening, as the sun cast lengthening shadows, I wandered about photographing a park that is always in transition, forever new.

A new exhibition of Korean art is coming to the San Diego Museum of Art.

One end of the Botanical Building’s steel structure has been renovated.

New love, perhaps?

Inflating the huge screen at the Spreckels Organ Pavilion for Silent Movie Night.

What’s coming next at the Casa Del Prado Theater?

Painting patio tiles at Spanish Village Art Center.

Flowers fall away as new flowers appear..

Walking into the light through one wonderful park.

Symphony brass, a World Premiere, and the Spreckels Organ!

When San Diego Symphony musicians team up with San Diego Civic Organist Raul Prieto Ramírez, you know extraordinary music will follow. When the concert includes a World Premiere by noted composer Texu Kim, it’s an experience you won’t soon forget!

This evening, in San Diego’s always amazing Balboa Park, a Brass and Organ Stereophonic Stravaganza was enjoyed by a huge crowd at the Spreckels Organ Pavilion.

Fine music flowed from the brass instruments of eight San Diego Symphony musicians. Their notes were often accompanied by the mighty Spreckels Organ, world’s largest outdoor musical instrument. A stream of emotions was summoned almost magically, as excellent music will do. It all resulted in a prolonged final standing ovation.

The World Premiere of the piece Mir by Texu Kim was surprising, innovative and a whole lot of fun. I heard audience members gasp when the piece concluded. Learn more about the featured guest composer Texu Kim here.

If you haven’t been to any of this year’s 35th Annual San Diego International Organ Festival free concerts, you should go! There are three more scheduled in Balboa Park. Next Monday the organist is from the Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris! The following Monday is Silent Movie Night–a crowd favorite every year!

Interested? Check out the schedule for the remaining concerts here.

America connects in amazing Escondido tile mosaic!

Earlier this year, stunning public art debuted in Escondido. You can find this tile mosaic mural near Maple Street Plaza, on an outdoor wall west of the John Paul the Great Catholic University building.

The amazing “America Connects West Region Mural Mosaic” unites small works of tile art painted by over 1500 participants, ages 7 to 97, representing America’s Western States.

According to the official website, Mural Mosaic’s Global Roots is a unique initiative that aims to bring people from around the world together through the power of art. Each collaborative Mural Mosaic production invites people from communities everywhere to connect and celebrate their unity through their diverse expressions of art. With each tile placed in a mural, Global Roots is reconnecting the world through the joy of art – one tile, one mural mosaic, one country at a time.

Not only is this a very cool concept, but the finished Global Roots murals, which often depict beautiful trees and landscapes, are spectacular!

This particular West Region project was finished in collaboration with Esco Alley Art in Escondido. You can see other Esco Alley Art murals here and here.

I took these photographs yesterday…

Cool photo memories from August 2018.

I can’t believe how many cool photographs I captured five years ago, back in August 2018!

There were so many great events. There was the Lemon Festival in Chula Vista . . . RC boats racing on Mission Bay’s Model Yacht Pond . . . the Sea Chantey Festival at the Maritime Museum . . . and a celebration of Californio history in Old Town!

And there was that strange mathematical sculpture being assembled at University of San Diego . . . a special look at a model of Lane Field, which long ago was home of the Padres . . . an exhibition of truly bizarre furniture . . . the US National Beat Poet Laureate performing in Balboa Park. . . and, last but not least, a look inside one of San Diego’s most amazing and little known museums!

Curious?

Click the following links to enjoy lots of photographs!

The stunning Tekken activation at Comic-Con!

One of the most visually stunning activations I’ve seen outside Comic-Con 2023 so far was put together by Bandai Namco Entertainment. They are showcasing their ever popular Tekken fighting video games.

I didn’t even know this Comic-Con offsite existed until I walked down MLK Promenade a day or two ago. Well, today it is open. I stepped inside and my eyes almost popped out of my head!

Right as you enter, four actors portraying classic Tekken characters pose on a platform, and the lighting inside the darkened room makes them look unbelievably awesome–almost unreal. They slowly shifted their poses as I took several photos.

Nearby, visitors could play Tekken at many stations. There are also cool photo ops like the one you see above, free refreshments (thank you for the cold can of Sprite on a hot day), and face painting!

Keep your eyes peeled as you walk down Martin Luther King Jr. Promenade across from the San Diego Convention Center. This small but very cool Tekken activation is not far from Camp Snoopy.

Design In Wood at San Diego County Fair!

I must confess that my favorite part of the San Diego County Fair every year is the Design In Wood exhibition of fine woodworking. The amazing creations of woodworkers around the San Diego region always blow my mind!

Check out some of the creations you will see. You’ll find beautifully crafted furniture such as chairs, tables and cabinets. There are extraordinary carved sculptures. There are imaginative works of art made of wood that you can hang on the wall. There are surfboards. There are clocks. There are fantastic guitars. There are elaborate, very detailed model ships. There are wooden toys. There’s even an Addams Family pinball machine made almost entirely of wood!

What’s really cool is that several woodworking organizations from around San Diego County provide expert demonstrations, too. Small items that you can buy for a donation such as spinning tops and writing pens are fashioned while you watch.

Design In Wood is presented in association with the San Diego Fine Woodworkers Association. You can find this awesome exhibition at the Del Mar Fairgrounds in the Mission Tower next to the Gems and Minerals exhibit.

Flower Show at San Diego County Fair!

Every year the San Diego County Fair attracts a good crowd to its Flower Show. This year was no exception.

Today I meandered past tables of beautiful floral displays at the Paul Ecke Jr. Flower Show inside the fairground’s spacious O’Brien Hall. Don’t ask me how ribbons are awarded in a competitive show such as this. The flowers all appeared perfectly amazing to me.

I saw different types of flowers and some carefully assembled floral arrangements. I took these photos as I walked along.

I spent several hours at the 2023 San Diego County Fair today and now have a boatload of fun and interesting photos coming up! Stay tuned in the next few days!

Nearly 1000 photos of San Diego street art!

San Diego boasts an amazing quantity and variety of street art. Artists have added color to almost every community. Head down any street and there’s a chance you’ll discover a new mural or unexpected bit of art!

I’ve been posting photographs to Cool San Diego Sights for almost ten years now. During my walks around San Diego, my camera has scored numerous such discoveries. So many, in fact, that I created a Pinterest page that now contains almost 1000 street art images!

Links on my Pinterest page allow you to navigate to the associated blog posts on Cool San Diego Sights, where I usually provide a description of the artwork.

This week the big Our Walls Speak event is being held in and around Barrio Logan. Given the renewed interest in our city’s outdoor murals, I figured now would be a good time to share that Pinterest page.
