Rigors of Flight at new Sweetwater Park!

The new 39-acre Sweetwater Park opened earlier this month in Chula Vista. It’s located on the edge of San Diego Bay, adjacent to Sweetwater Marsh National Wildlife Refuge. It you’ve had a chance to visit the public park and walk its nature trails, you’ve no doubt seen a towering 25-foot tall sculpture that looks exactly like a wishbone!

The steel sculpture, created by artist Roberto Salas, is titled Rigors of Flight.

Why the wishbone shape? The wishbone is a forked bone found in most birds. It strengthens the bird’s skeleton, helping it to withstand the rigors of flight. Birds are plentiful in the park!

I walked through Sweetwater Park yesterday and approached the sculpture. I took these photographs.

Identify these 10 shadows in Balboa Park!

Ready for a visual puzzle?

I walked all around Balboa Park today and noticed all sorts of mysterious shadows. I took photographs, then decided to make a game of it! I like having fun! How about you?

Can you identify the actions or things that produce these interesting shadows? Here’s a hint: the people are regular street performers you’ll see almost every weekend along El Prado. What are they doing?

There’s no prize to win here–sorry.

Walking the Coastal Trail at Cabrillo National Monument.

The Coastal Trail provides an incredibly scenic walk at Cabrillo National Monument. It runs for about half a mile along rugged sandstone bluffs beside the Pacific Ocean.

The easy to moderate trail, with occasional steep steps leading up and down, begins by the park’s Tidepool Parking and winds north to Sea Cove Parking.

I asked a park ranger her favorite aspect of this trail. She loved how lines of pelicans soar along the ocean’s edge at eye level. I love that too.

I went for a walk along Coastal Trail the other day and took photos as I proceeded north. One comes to the tidepools very quickly. If you’d like a closer look at the tidepools, you can click here.

The scenic trail is very popular. Misty fog drifting in from the ocean is common.

Visitors like to pause and relax in this wide area just north of the tidepools.

A climb is coming up…
This stretch of steps is fairly long. I took it slow and easy. The steps are uneven in places.
Here comes something interesting…
This is an underground searchlight shelter from World War II. Visitors must safely stay off the unstable roof.
More stunning ocean vistas ahead as walkers proceed through native coastal vegetation.
The farther north you go, the fewer walkers you’ll likely encounter.
Brown pelicans soar along at eye level. Your spirit might soar, too.

Walking down to Cabrillo National Monument’s tidepools!

In April, 2024, a new trail opened at Cabrillo National Monument. The Oceanside Trail starts at the Kelp Forest and Whale Overlook south of the Old Point Loma Lighthouse, and descends via several switchbacks to the Coast Trail, intersecting it a few steps from the main tidepool parking lot.

The Oceanside Trail is fairly steep and rugged, but if you’re in good physical shape, wearing good shoes and carrying plenty of water, the hike is really great!

I enjoyed the hike recently and took photographs as I walked down to the tidepools through incoming wisps of ocean fog!

Here’s where you start, from the looping path south of the lighthouse, just beyond the whale overlook.
Map shows the Oceanside Trail. It’s about a 2.5 miles round-trip and can be strenuous.
Approaching a World War II observation bunker, which guarded the coast from a potential Japanese invasion.
The trail leads around the old military bunker.
You can see the New Point Loma Lighthouse in the distance by the water. It’s a residential area for Coast Guard officers.
Watch your step!
There are several switchbacks. Most feature steps.
A walker heading up. You can see how wisps of fog were drifting inland from the Pacific Ocean.
There are a couple of benches for resting and viewing the scenery, too.
Native coastal plants along the Oceanside Trail provide additional beauty and interest.
We’re approaching Cabrillo Road, which descends to the tidepool area from the Cabrillo National Monument entrance gate. Before the Oceanside Trail opened, it was the only way down.

A park ranger told me the circular platform with a track was used to rotate a gun during World War II.
Those people ahead are on the Coast Trail, heading between the nearby parking lot and tidepools.

I’ll be blogging about the Coast Trail shortly. It extends north from here along the rugged, sandstone bluffs, providing amazing views.

Street art at Vision Culture Foundation in National City!

This cool street art painted on a long wall is visible from Highland Avenue at the Vision Culture Foundation in National City. When I recently walked by they appeared to be closed. I paused to take these photographs from the sidewalk just outside their gate entrance.

Here’s the Vision Culture Foundation website. The organization focuses on creative arts, and their center strives to empower and uplift youth and the community. They are a safe space that nurtures goals and dreams.

Fun photos of 2025 East Village Block Party!

This morning, before the East Village Block Party officially began, I walked down J Street just north of Petco Park and checked out a bunch of very cool lowrider cars. You can see those photographs by clicking here.

I returned to the block party in the mid-afternoon as it was in full swing!

The huge crowd wasn’t surprising. The San Diego Padres seem more popular than ever. The East Village Block Party celebrates the beginning of a promising 2025 baseball season.

Enjoy some fun photos!

Mariachi Internacional was performing on the stage at the east end of the block party. As you’ll see, they’d later walk down J Street playing their instruments with big smiles.

The pitching game must be tough. I didn’t see a single person succeed.

New structures appear at Sweetwater Park!

Sweetwater Park will be opening later this year beside San Diego Bay in Chula Vista. Everyone will be able to enjoy recreation, nature trails, a big playground and more in the 21-acre public park.

Sweetwater Park will stretch from Bayside Park (to be redeveloped into Harbor Park) and the new Gaylord Pacific Resort and Convention Center, north to Sweetwater Marsh and the Sun Outdoors San Diego Bay RV resort.

Back in October, I walked up the footpath that was already open along the east side of the park (which I now see is called Sweetwater Bicycle Path & Promenade). The park itself was fenced off at the time, and it still is today. But changes have occurred!

You can see how Sweetwater Park appeared late last year by checking out my old blog post here. Since then a number of new structures have been built, including landmark signs at either end, a tall, quite strange wishbone-shaped sculpture near the center of the park, and the big, awesome-looking playground!

Springing toward Spring in Balboa Park!

Daylight Savings began last night, causing everyone in San Diego to spring forward one hour. Can you believe it? In less than two weeks Spring will have sprung!

It’s beginning to look a lot like Spring in Balboa Park!

Today was a warm sunny Sunday, with thousands of visitors enjoying the park’s museums, gardens, the weekly organ concert at the Spreckels Organ Pavilion, and picnics on the grass.

I wandered about…

Cherry blossoms have added color to the Lower Garden at the Japanese Friendship Garden. Their big Cherry Blossom Festival is next weekend!
The sun has been rising higher and higher, so rented umbrellas are a welcome thing during another free Sunday afternoon concert at the Spreckels Organ Pavilion.
You can always find lots of bright color in the House of Mexico cottage.
I noticed more and more flowers. These were blooming near the Balboa Park Club building.

What’s all this activity in front of Balboa Park’s Activity Center?
It’s the epic annual Thursday Club Rummage Sale! That means it must be almost spring!
Across Park Boulevard, a banner promotes the 33rd Annual Multi-Cultural Earth Day, coming Sunday, April 20th, at the WorldBeat Cultural Center.
A perfect sunny day for car enthusiasts to show off their wheels in the park!
It’s even greener than usual between the House of Hospitality and the Casa de Balboa.

Three cool murals in South Oceanside!

You might enjoy checking out these photographs of three cool murals in South Oceanside. I saw them about a month ago when I walked up South Coast Highway.

The first celebrates “South O” with a view of the Oceanside Pier (to the north) at sunset. The mural is painted on a side of the building at 1821 S. Coast Highway. The artist is Taylor Gallegos (@taylorgallegosart).

The next mural is tagged #ThePearlofSouthO. It’s another Oceanside Pier at sunset–but more abstract. You can find this work of art at 1745 S. Coast Highway.

Finally, anyone traveling along South Coast Highway has undoubtedly observed the next mural at Sea Hive Marketplace. The address is 1555 S. Coast Highway. It states: Greetings from Oceanside USA!
