Dean, Rosie, Nat and Sinatra appear in National City!

Four legendary singers are coming to National City. Dean Martin, Rosie Hamlin, Nat King Cole and Frank Sinatra are gradually materializing outside Cafe La Maze Streakhouse!

Check out this amazing spray paint mural that is being created by Paul Jimenez and Signe Ditona of Ground Floor Murals!

Most people know Dean Martin, Nat King Cole and Frank Sinatra. But do you recognize the name Rosie Hamlin?

Rosalie “Rosie” Hamlin was lead singer of Rosie and the Originals. The musical group’s 1960 hit single Angel Baby is now considered an oldies standard. Versions of the song has been recorded by numerous famous artists, including John Lennon and Linda Ronstadt.

Rosie Hamlin wrote Angel Baby while attending Sweetwater High School in National City!

Very cool!

Next time I walk by it, I’ll take photos of the completed mural and post them as an update.

Monsters, myth and love in National City!

At the corner of Plaza Boulevard and Highland Avenue in National City, you’ll find monsters, myth and love!

These four electrical boxes have been painted this way for many years. Today I enjoyed a long walk through National City before the rain started. As I approached the intersection, I remembered that I hadn’t yet photographed this particular street art!

So here we go!

One box has a cool design that appears to have been inspired by mythology. Another shows Godzilla battling King Ghidorah. Then there’s the abstract elephant, a feline rocket ship and a rainbow-powered cat! And love on roller skates!

New dreams, same Normal Heights corner!

Dreams live in Normal Heights on the corner of Felton Street and Adams Avenue. These dreams are given life by artists.

But dreams are fleeting. They eventually fade; new dreams appear.

I photographed different dreamlike street art on this San Diego corner almost seven years ago. The group of electrical boxes has been decorated for as long as I can remember. Some of the past artwork was nightmarish. See those old photos here.

New, happier dreams have been painted since then.

Beautiful face on North Park street corner.

For many years, the face of Jimi Hendrix could be seen at the corner of Adams Avenue and Ohio Street in North Park. The cool spray painted art decorated a tattoo parlor. You can see a photo of that now vanished mural here.

During a recent walk, I noticed a new image has appeared in the same spot! Do you recognize this beautiful face? Leave a comment!

Two happy skeletons party in Barrio Logan!

A happy skeleton couple (and their dog) have been partying day and night on a street corner in Barrio Logan. Perhaps you’ve seen them, drinks in hand, having a good time, on the side of a building at Logan Avenue and Sampson Street!

I spied this mural for the first time a few days ago during a Barrio Logan walk. According to the spray painted signature, the mural was designed by Diego Romo and painted by Dent Angeles (@dentloktattooarts) earlier this year.

Padres mural honors, remembers Peter Seidler.

Thank you Peter Seidler. 1960-2023.

A mural has been painted in downtown San Diego that honors and remembers Padres owner Peter Seidler, who passed away earlier this week.

Peter Seidler will be missed by many. He was a friend to all of San Diego.

The mural, on the north wall of the Copley Building at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, was created by the artists of Ground Floor Murals. You’ve possibly seen their other Padres murals around San Diego.

New downtown mural celebrates San Diego!

I spotted this awesome new mural yesterday during a walk in downtown San Diego. It’s painted on a wall by the small parking lot on India Street north of A Street.

The colorful artwork appears to celebrate San Diego’s Columbia District, with musical notes from the nearby Music Box, a train (Santa Fe Depot), a cruise ship and distinctive Emerald Plaza. But I’m not certain. Because I also see an image of Balboa Park’s distant California Tower and part of the Padres logo.

I searched for an artist signature but found none.

Does anybody reading my blog know who created this great mural? Is it a work in progress? There’s a difficult-to-reach section on the right end of the wall that is blank.

If I learn more I’ll provide an update.

UPDATE!

I’ve learned the mural is by international artist and downtown San Diego resident David Feucht. It was finished just recently.

Very cool!

Two cool murals in another Escondido alley!

Welcome to Grand Avenue. Escondido, California. The Beautiful Hidden Valley. Mural by Zane Kingcade, 2023.

The Esco Alley Art project has brought dozens of murals to the alley south of Grand Avenue in downtown Escondido. Now they’re expanding to the alley just north of Grand. See their first mural, which debuted a few weeks ago, here.

During my recent Escondido walk, I noticed two other murals previously painted in this same alley. They’re located just east of Kalmia Street.

Both are painted by prolific local muralist Zane Kingcade, who operates the art and clothing store Street Life at 254 East Grand Avenue. He has painted many cool murals all over Escondido!

Cool street art in south Oceanside!

These street art photographs are from a walk I enjoyed a couple days ago. They were taken as I wandered down several blocks in south Oceanside, from 1719 to 1840 South Coast Highway.

Street art shows reasons to Visit Escondido!

A love for Escondido shines brightly from an electrical box that is situated near the corner of Valley Parkway and Broadway. Award-winning local artist Suzanne Nicolaisen (aka Zanniki) painted this street art, infusing it with light, color and life.

What small scenes on the four sides of this box do you recognize?

I believe I see the Escondido gateway arch on Grand Avenue, Maple Street Plaza, the old train depot at Grape Day Park, City Hall, not to mention sunshine, palm trees, flowers, grapes, avocados, and above all an airplane towing a banner that reads: Visit Escondido!
