Horrifying scenes in Balboa Park!

Several horrifying scenes were observed by those visiting Balboa Park this evening!

An enormous crowd eagerly watched as Stan Laurel, Oliver Hardy and Buster Keaton were frightened out of their wits by a series of absurdly hilarious incidents. All the while accompanied by music from the Spreckels Organ!

Yes, tonight was Halloween Silent Movie Night at the Spreckels Organ Pavilion. Organist Mark Herman provided musical notes of suspense and humor for three spooky silent films during this last performance of the 33rd San Diego International Organ Festival.

Mark Herman performs over 30 concerts and silent film presentations around the world every year. His international awards and accomplishments are numerous. This was his very first visit to the mighty Spreckels Organ, world’s largest musical instrument!

The organ added emotional flair to the nonstop slapstick action on the screen. Laughter erupted frequently!

How can you not laugh when Laurel & Hardy finally manage to break into a graveyard, then encounter a prankster in a ghostly sheet!

Amusing photos for an almost weekend!

It’s almost Friday. That means it’s almost the weekend. Right?

Works for me.

So that we can all anticipate the weekend properly, I’ve curated an odd batch of amusing photos.

Taken during the past month or so. No particular order…

What label beverage is this?
New superhero in town? Villain?
Not much of an agenda.
Discarding seven years bad luck.
Biggest coupon ever.
Truck successfully smashed through a brick wall, only to hit that pole.
Guitarist crossing.
Padres trying out a new outfielder.
Now that’s genuinely scary!

Brise Birdsong street art at Civita!

Look at all this fun Brise Birdsong (@breezy_bird) street art in Civita!

I took these photos during my recent walk through the large Civita residential development in Mission Valley.

Brise Birdsong is a local artist and illustrator whose street art can be seen all over San Diego. What you see here is a good example of her style. It appears all of these boxes were painted in 2017.

She particularly likes dog art. I like how the electrical box in my first few photos has had its panels mixed up, presumably by a utility worker.

Should you walk the sidewalks of Civita you’ll discover these and other happily painted boxes!

Halloween comes early in Balboa Park!

Halloween was celebrated a bit early today in Balboa Park–if you’re a Pomeranian!

Furry participants in cute and humorous costumes were running about near the Bea Evenson Fountain when I walked through Balboa Park late this afternoon.

I had stumbled upon the 7th Annual Pom Pom Halloween Walk In Balboa Park, a fun event with members of the San Diego Pomeranian Meetup Group.

Which costume do you like best?

(I’m trying to decide: taco or cupcakes.)

Gerardo Meza art near Beyer Boulevard station.

I found more great Gerardo Meza street art in San Ysidro!

I was waiting for the Blue Line trolley at the Beyer Boulevard trolley station recently when I spied these two electrical boxes. Both are located at the intersection of Beyer Boulevard and Caminito de los Ninos, close to the San Ysidro Health building.

Gerardo Meza has a distinctive cartoonish style that usually conveys humor or political satire. It seems his brush just creates and creates and creates like a perpetual motion machine.

Every time I walk through San Ysidro, I see his art everywhere!

Check out his Instagram page here.

Love wins at La Mesa’s Weiner Dog Races!

The Weiner Dog Races at the 2021 La Mesa Oktoberfest made for an exciting spectator sport. The crowd cheered. Dog athletes raced down a short track into the outstretched arms of loved ones. Some dogs became confused in all the excitement and ran the wrong way. Love can do that.

One race saw all four contestants wander off in different directions, tails wagging. The judges were forgiving and restarted that one.

The Weiner Dog Races were brought to La Mesa Oktoberfest by the Dackeldorf Dachshund Village. There was also a doggie fashion show, which I missed.

Enjoy some photos that show love wins every time. Even if the furry arrival is a bit tardy.

Dogs surf freestyle in Del Mar!

The world-famous 2021 Surf Dog Surf-a-Thon was held today in Del Mar!

The non-stop surfing action took place at Dog Beach, and dozens of furry athletes did their best to score style points as they conquered the waves and entertained the crowd in support of Helen Woodward Animal Center.

The surfing I observed was freestyle. That meant two or three dogs per surfboard! Whether contestants faced forward or backward seemed unimportant!

I took the following photos of this amazing canine sporting event for your enjoyment and amusement. Yes, it’s all a bit silly, even crazy. But you know what? It was evident that the excited dogs were having a blast! Many were jumping back toward the ocean the moment they landed on the sand!

Amusing photos from an Oceanside walk!

ON THIS SITE IN 1897 NOTHING HAPPENED. A funny plaque on the Inner World Smoke Shop building.

This morning I took the first scheduled Coaster train up to Oceanside. I wanted to watch the annual Annual Labor Day Oceanside Pier Swim, but it was already over when I arrived. Oops!

But I did go on a long random walk and discovered a bunch of cool stuff!

First off, enjoy this collection of amusing photos. It appears many people in Oceanside have a good sense of humor!

I spotted these as I sauntered down various sidewalks…

Only COOL people allowed. A humorous COVID-19 sign.
It seems even the chef at Mary’s Family Restaurant has to wait in line.
Yellow hand seats at Alfredo’s Mexican Food.
Beer speaks. People mumble. Here’s lookin’ atcha, Oceanside!
Is he heading for Trestles? Malibu? The Jetties?
Beware the hammerhead shark at the entrance to Sandy Toes Gift Store. That’s one big mouth!
A slice of metal pie is included in the patio fence at Carmine’s Pizza.
A giant rooster guards the entrance to Carrillo Pottery.
A funny face painted on a window at Knuckleheads Barbershop.
O’side or No Side. Humorous graphic at the Real Surf Shop, on the rear of their old Chevrolet Apache.

A fistful of fun photos for Friday!

Unusual lifeguards occupy Tower 2 in Imperial Beach!

I know it’s not quite Friday yet–there’s still a few hours to go as I post this. But no matter.

The weekend is almost here!

For your enjoyment, I now present these random fun photographs that I took in the past few weeks!

A nostalgic Pinball Machines sign in a Gaslamp Quarter window.
A colorful koi pond mural in Ocean Beach.
Flowers are like friends…they bring color to your world.
Ladies who were dancing on the Embarcadero this evening pose and smile for my camera!
Colorful graffiti art on the side of a produce delivery truck in Mission Valley.
An awesome calavera San Diego shirt in a shop window!
A happy wood stove. I spotted this neon art on Main Street in Ramona.
A beautiful flower at the County Center/Little Italy trolley station.
Gazing out at San Diego Bay from the Broadway Pier, shortly before sunset.

Hippie Dog in an Ocean Beach alley!

There’s a mural in an Ocean Beach alley that perfectly captures the vibe of this laid-back San Diego community. The spray painted artwork depicts a Hippie Dog!

I saw the mural today as I walked down Cable Street, just south of Newport Avenue. It’s on one side of Maxoto Auto Service.

The artist is @monocrew, and I see from their Instagram page the mural is a tribute to nearby Dog Beach and a particular dog named Tigger. It was painted back in February this year.

That’s one very cool dog!
