A street musician on San Diego’s always dynamic Embarcadero plays bagpipes that shoot flames!
How crazy is this?
During my afternoon walk near the USS Midway Museum I spotted a street musician playing some bagpipes. But these weren’t ordinary bagpipes. These shot flames!
I meant to ask the performer how his unique flamethrower bagpipes work, but he kept playing and playing, and receiving a steady stream of donations, and I didn’t want to interrupt his performance. I’ll have to ask him a few questions should I see him again!
Very cool!
These flamethrower bagpipes drew a lot of attention at the foot of Navy Pier!An unexpected cool sight during another walk in San Diego!

A well-dressed gorilla on a plate in a funny San Diego shop window. I also see some wind-up chattering teeth.
Here comes another generous helping of funny photos! All of these pics are from past walks.
Enjoy a laugh or two!
A silly bee made of a potted plant and old metal stuff. I spotted this in front of the Hive Sushi Lounge on Golden Hill.Marshmallow Madness in the window of IT’SUGAR in the Gaslamp. This cereal has Absolutely No Nutritional Value Added! So lazy can’t move. Must be the sugar crash.World leaders on socks! Funny gifts on display in the window of the Find Your Feet store. In the middle of the day, a neon sign hopefully proclaims It’s 5:00 Somewhere.Education is important but beer is importanter, according to a sign in front of Coin Haus in La Mesa.A tiny gull stands atop the hat of a Navy sailor! (Actually it’s just an ordinary gull atop Seward Johnson’s enormous Embracing Peace statue on the Embarcadero.)Someone from Park City, Utah with a yacht is bored of the snow, or snowboarding, apparently.Perhaps Santa is tired of the snow, too. I think I spotted his beard in Seaport Village. That heavy beard is great for the North Pole, but too warm in sunny San Diego!A banner for your spoiled rotten cat.Another elegantly dressed animal–a cow! Plus a bonus funny face. These two dogs in the Michael J Wolf Fine Arts gallery must like to wine.

Marvin the Martian salutes as a space rocket rises.
I believe this cool Marvin the Martian Space Clones mural was painted during San Diego Comic-Con, but I noticed it for the first time yesterday as I walked through Little Italy. It’s painted on the front of the Blick Art Materials store on India Street.
The early morning sun was casting a tree’s dark shadow onto the mural. The effect is interesting–almost psychedelic.
Bugs Bunny watch out! Marvin has his lethal ray gun ready to zap, and he’s a tad bit smarter than Yosemite Sam!
Marvin the Martian, lurking in a mural, awaits two unsuspecting humans who are walking down a Little Italy sidewalk.Marvin the Martian was created to resemble the Roman god of war Mars. Bugs Bunny, watch out! That’s no Elmer Fudd!Marvin the Martian is ready to conquer planet Earth. But somehow I don’t think he’ll succeed.

A couple of tiny smiling scarecrows occupy flower planters on India Street in Little Italy.
It must be autumn in San Diego! Because this morning I was greeted by all sorts of pumpkins and friendly scarecrows as I walked up India Street in Little Italy! Thanksgiving is almost here!
As I walked up India Street I encountered many scarecrows and pumpkins. It must be autumn–almost Thanksgiving!Three pumpkins and three friendly scarecrows on bales of hay at the base of the famous Little Italy landmark sign.Elegant pumpkins in a Little Italy shop window.A welcoming orange pumpkin in another shop window. That scarecrow in the middle looks like a sneaky crow in disguise!Walk up India Street in Little Italy and you’re reminded that it’s autumn in San Diego!

A huge 16-feet-tall robot stands guard on Commercial Street!
Take the Orange Line of the San Diego Trolley down Commercial Street and you might encounter a giant 16-feet-tall robot! As if waiting to repel malicious invaders, the friendly-looking robot patiently stands guard near the corner of 22nd Street!
This unique public art was designed to add fun to the front of Paseo at Comm22, a housing project in Logan Heights east of downtown San Diego. The sculpture was created by artists Jamex and Einar de la Torre, who are brothers. The old school robot, complete with dials, gears and antennae rising from its cylindrical steel head, contains panels of stone that were carved in Tecate, Mexico. Many of these panels contain inventive, humorous Mayan designs!
Very cool!

Yesterday I spotted some fun new murals in the process of being painted at Sheldon’s Service Station, a popular La Mesa breakfast and lunch spot. Many years ago this coffee shop’s building was a La Mesa gas station.
A friendly guy at Sheldon’s Service Station said an artist named Kara has been working on the two murals for a couple of weeks. Take a look!

A hungry zombie eyes dinner at 2017 San Diego Comic-Con . . . and it’s me!
If you are nervous or squeamish, don’t look at these photos or read the captions. I’m warning you. It’s all quite gruesome.
The events you are about to witness happened today at 2017 San Diego Comic-Con. Some of the fans were completely unprepared for what happened…
Everyone was having a great time at Comic-Con. I was just wandering about, not paying very close attention. That place looks cool. I’ll go check that out. I wonder what they mean by Deadquarters? They’ve got a nice lounge! Awesome! My feet are tired!Let’s all sit here and watch AMC’s show The Walking Dead. How entertaining and relaxing.Oh, wow! They’ve got pinball, too! This place rocks!A lady suddenly screamed and started running! Huh? What happened?Oh my gosh. That door says Dead Inside, and some hands are trying to open it from the inside.Oh my goodness! They’ve got zombies loose in here! Where’d they come from.Thank goodness this one doesn’t seem to see me.But this one does!Get away from me! I probably don’t taste all that good! The Walking Dead Encounter! I wish I’d seen that sooner. Maybe some caffeine from a Mountain Dew will help me escape . . .I see fans of The Walking Dead are learning fighting skills to fend off these hungry zombies.A tiny version of Deadpool was swinging a bat wrapped with barbed wire. I think he nailed a couple zombies.Over here, quick! Help! Where’s that little superhero?Nobody seems to take these zombies very seriously. Watch out, people! They actually appear to be hungry!Told you so!

A humorous sculpture stands on the sidewalk outside the Ron English POPaganda art exhibit in San Diego.
There’s a small but eye-popping exhibit a few blocks from most of the Comic-Con action that many art lovers should enjoy–particularly those who are fans of Ron English and his style of humorous, anti-corporate art.
I visited his POPaganda exhibit and captured a few photos to provide an idea of what you will see. This is the first US stop of his “Make America GRIN Again” tour. I wonder who is grinning? Personally, I found it a bit ironic that the effort to sell profuse merchandise seems to eclipse his few (but delightful) pieces of anti-consumerist art. But what do I know?
You can find this fun pop-up exhibit at 1037 J Street. It’s open Wednesday through Saturday 11:00am to 6:00pm. Ron English will be present and signing from 3:00pm to 5:00pm, Thursday through Saturday.
The Statue of Liberty is grinning like a skull during 2017 Comic-Con.Looks like a Hulkish, supersized Ronald McDonald with red stretchy pants. He must work out after taking in all those calories. It’s Sugar Diabetic Bear!Looks somewhat like Franken Berry. Uh, oh! This subversive exhibit is making me hungry for sugary cereal!
