Why is there a big yellow bison standing on the roof of an apartment building in Golden Hill?
You can see this very odd sight on the southeast corner of Broadway and 21st Street.
I spoke to some folks walking across the street. They’ve lived in the neighborhood for ten years. They told me the big yellow bison has been standing up on that rooftop for at least a decade. They guess the building owner must really like bison!
Seems as good an explanation as any!

I appreciate your wanting to find out why the bison is there, but I find I’m enjoying the mystery, as well as the beast. (Mystery & the Beast…) How wonderful the possibility that, even in a big 21st-c city, sometimes something just is! Unexplained, unjustified, and there it is.

Me too! (I began my working life as a copy-checker for a national magazine…) And if/when you learn the story of the golden bison, I’ll want to hear it. Meanwhile, even so, I love the idea of something that just up and happens, just up and is there, and we don’t know why. I remember a house in an old district of Calgary (“old” being relative) that had a vintage cannon mounted on the roof. Very small, very harmless, not pointed at anything, but there it was, atop the home of a little old widow lady…

I live here. The art on the west side of the building are bison’s painted by a prominent family artist back in the day. The building is known as the Buffalo building.
