Late this afternoon I discovered strange and wonderful beauty.
As I relaxed on a comfortable wooden bench on the poop deck of the Star of India, enjoying the sea breeze and sunlit bay, my eyes were drawn to the riot of ropes that were coiled, knotted, stretched and dangling all about the deck, in every direction. How strangely beautiful they appeared.
I took a few photos.

Sailing ships have an awful lot of rope. But yes, they are beautiful. I once queued for ages to get on board a replica of Captain James Cook’s Endeavour. I was amused to hear a little girl say, despondently, “There’s nothing here but ropes!”

It was. A disappointing result (for her) after spending so long in the queue. The ropes also made me rethink pirate movies. In reality, there wasn’t too much room to swing your cutlass about.
