This very colorful street art was painted on two electrical boxes on University Avenue in Hillcrest. It’s signed by artist Liz Lancaster (@lizmurals) and dated 2024.
Different heads appear to be growing atop multi-colored stalks. On the street-facing side of one box there are flowers and the words: Let Love Grow.
You can find this street art a bit west of Park Boulevard. It is so very unique that it’s hard to miss!

A cool opportunity for youth in San Diego to meet others, share, learn and create is coming up on June 3, 2026!
Youth Summit 2026 will be taking place in Balboa Park. The free event is hosted by the City of San Diego Office of Child and Youth Success, in partnership with the San Diego Public Library, Youth Will, Reality Changers, The LGBTQ+ Community Center, and Our Time to Act.
There will be speakers (including San Diego Poet Laureate), art presenters, breakout sessions, workshops, fun games, and hands-on activities. Youth will learn how to access useful resources, too.
I saw the above announcement in Balboa Park today and thought I’d share it. Do you know any young people who might like to participate?
This super colorful mural is painted on the side of a 7-Eleven convenience store and gas station in Hillcrest, near the corner of University Avenue and Normal Street. San Diego artist Carly Ealey created the spray paint art back in 2023.
The sunglasses of the refreshment-sipping character shine with rainbow colors. That will be more appropriate than ever, once the south end of Pride Promenade is completed directly in front of the mural! Hillcrest is home to many in San Diego’s LGBT community.

The construction of Pride Promenade in Hillcrest is making great progress. I spoke to a worker and he indicated the pedestrian promenade and its new bikeways should be completed this summer.
Yesterday I took several photographs over a construction fence, north of University Avenue. The finished promenade will stretch from this location, near the base of the Pride flag, up to Washington Street.
According to this webpage of the Hillcrest Business Association: The northern anchor of the Promenade will be a restored streetcar. In recognition of the streetcars that once traveled on Normal Street, this facility will serve as a concession stand, gathering point, and information booth. There will also be a playground north of the streetcar. Check out the above webpage to see a map and learn more.
You can also purchase a custom paver to be installed in the Pride Promenade. Funds will help create the Friends of the Promenade nonprofit. Learn more about this program here.

I spied this very colorful mural in Bankers Hill on the north side of West Hair Salon on Fifth Avenue. It appears to uniquely combine elements of Día de los Muertos calavera face painting and Pride rainbow imagery!
The artist signature is that of Genaro Garcia (@artegennaro).
I took this photograph over a parked car the other day, but you can see most of the artwork.

San Diego Loyal SC soccer player Collin Martin has been honored with a mural in Hillcrest’s colorful Art Alley. The midfielder is proudly kicking it among other alley murals, which you can find by clicking here.
I spotted this new mural during a bus ride down University Avenue east of Fourth Avenue, and I had to jump off at the next stop for a photograph. Turns out the mural was completed just a day or two ago!
The talented young artists behind this cool street art call themselves Ground Floor Murals. You’ve possibly seen their many awesome San Diego Padres murals all around the city!

I spotted a new mural in Hillcrest at the corner of University and Third Avenue! A rainbow heart and glamorous face decorate one wall of Urban MO’s Bar and Grill.
The artwork, adding even more color to the dynamic LGBT community in Hillcrest, was spray painted by cool local artist Alex Julian.

Artist creates live street art during 2015 CityFest in Hillcrest.
This afternoon I walked with my camera through CityFest. The annual street festival attracts an enthusiastic crowd of about 150,000 people to Hillcrest, a community directly north of downtown San Diego. Hillcrest might be considered one of San Diego’s bohemian neighborhoods, where free-spirited artists mingle with happy-go-lucky youth and a sizable LGBT population. Everybody I saw was just out enjoying a good time.
CityFest is a very popular summer festival held in Hillcrest along Fifth Avenue, south of University.
Main stage at CityFest features live music from noon until almost midnight.
Lots of artwork was being created while the public watched.
Another big canvas brought to life by urban artists.
Cans of paint in many colors.
Funky art could be spotted all around CityFest, as well as the usual street festival stuff, including lots of food.
I don’t know the name of this tall guy with the rainbow wings and multiple carnival mask faces. Lots of people were posing for photographs.
The most crowded tent seemed to belong to the Rad Hatter, where young and old could craft unique paper hats for free.
Many local artists had their work on display and for sale at CityFest in Hillcrest.
Colorful pop art seems to be a favorite at this annual street festival.
I see Batman and Marilyn Monroe, among other boldly painted faces.
