Comic-Con Museum inspires real life heroes!

One cool thing about San Diego’s Comic-Con Museum in Balboa Park is that it can inspire heroism. Sure, we ordinary mortals might not possess superpowers, but we do have the power to do great good in this world.

After museum visitors check out the current, very extensive The Myth of Superheroes exhibit, they pass a display concerning real life heroes. Three boards indicate that Heroes are windows to our PAST, PRESENT, FUTURE.

Rooftop views from San Diego Natural History Museum!

The rooftop of the San Diego Natural History Museum in Balboa Park is seldom open to the public. I was lucky that the rooftop happened to be open today, the first Tuesday of the month, when The NAT is free to San Diego residents and active military and their dependents. But I was told that’s not always the case.

The rooftop is indeed reliably open to the public the third Friday of every month, when the museum presents Nat at Night and remains open until 10 pm.

The Natural History Museum’s rooftop not only offers spectacular views, but there’s food and drink and plenty of tables. Today The Craft Taco had their menu available. Later this year, the food will be provided by San Diego’s Restaurant of the Year in 2024 (according to San Diego Magazine): Wolf in the Woods.

Rooftop views are to the east and south. To the east, one can see Balboa Park’s beautiful Desert and Rose Gardens, Morley Field and Florida Canyon, and in the far distance, the Cuyamaca Mountains. To the south is the Bea Evenson Fountain, the Fleet Science Center, and glimpses of downtown San Diego skyscrapers through treetops. In the distance one can recognize a slice of South Bay, and, on a clear day, one can see all the way to Mexico.

An amazing transformation at San Diego High School!

An amazing transformation is now underway at San Diego High School!

The school’s once drab appearance as seen from Park Boulevard is being radically altered. As you can see from these photographs taken today, a very cool new entrance is being built. San Diego’s oldest high school is being modernized!

The San Diego High School Administration & Classroom Building (Building 100) was an addition completed in 1976, and had all the stark aesthetics of many buildings designed in that era. The building serves as entrance to the campus.

Take a look at what’s coming!

You can see how the new glassy entrance with its cantilevered, sleekly projecting roof will make San Diego High School a new downtown landmark at the south end of Balboa Park! (Yes, the school is actually located inside Balboa Park.)

Spreckels Organ’s historic 110th Anniversary Concert!

The famous Spreckels Organ in Balboa Park celebrated its “birthday” today with a special anniversary concert. The organ debuted in 1915 on New Year’s Day for the Panama-California Exposition. Officially the world’s largest outdoor musical instrument, the Spreckels Organ has provided free weekly concerts in San Diego for–can you believe it–the last 110 years!

San Diego Civic Organist extraordinaire Raúl Prieto Ramírez is in Spain visiting his family for the holidays, so concert-goers today enjoyed music performed by well-known organist Russ Peck–another San Diego favorite! It’s the New Year, so he chose several traditional pieces by Johann Strauss Jr., including Wine, Women, and Song and, of course, The Blue Danube.

During the special concert, the public was invited to enter the organ building and see (and really hear!) the King of Instruments with its over 5000 pipes in action. Experiencing the organ this way is typically a once-every-year opportunity.

A sunny New Year’s Day walk in San Diego.

New Year’s Day in 2025 was the perfect day for a long, sunny walk in San Diego. So that’s what I did!

I took these photographs as I strolled from beautiful San Diego Bay to Balboa Park.

Happy New Year to all!

A couple sits at the end of Broadway Pier gazing across San Diego Bay toward many sailboats. It’s the San Diego Yacht Club’s annual New Year’s Day Race.
Many people were enjoying a sunny New Year’s Day by walking along San Diego’s Embarcadero.
The Children’s Park playground was super busy.
Family plays foosball at Children’s Park.
A quiet day to fish out on San Diego Bay.
A perfect day for friends to throw a baseball on the grass.
The big 2-day New Year’s FNGRS CRSSD concert takes place at Petco Park.
People enjoy walking through Balboa Park’s rose garden.
Yes, a very fine day for a walk.
Musician plays in the Plaza de Panama near Balboa Park’s House of Hospitality.
Many eyes gaze down into the lush Lower Garden of the Japanese Friendship Garden.
A good crowd listens to the 110th Anniversary Concert of the Spreckels Organ in Balboa Park.
You never know what you’ll see in Balboa Park!
Nearly all of the International Cottages in Balboa Park were closed for New Year’s Day. At the House of Scotland cottage, the door was wide open, welcoming one and all!
Another year gone by. The effort to reopen the historic Starlight Bowl continues.
The United States flag above the San Diego Automotive Museum is at half-staff on New Year’s Day. President Jimmy Carter passed away at age 100 on December 29, 2024.

A dazzling indoor Christmas display in San Diego!

Jewels of the Season has returned to the Timken Museum of Art in Balboa Park. The elegant lobby of the museum is decorated with over a thousand of jewel-like ornaments, creating perhaps the finest, most dazzling indoor Christmas display in San Diego!

Take a look at these photos. I’ll let you judge for yourself.

These one-of-a-kind ornaments were hand crafted by artists Florence Hord and Elizabeth Schlappi over the course of decades. Many of these precious works of art include colorfully embroidered and sequined patches that feature the San Diego Zoo, the Padres, the Star of India and other local attractions.

Visitors might stand in the museum lobby and simply stare with astonishment at the richly decorated Christmas tree, or the ceiling from which many ornaments hang like glittering stars.

Jewels of the Season can be freely enjoyed during the Timken‘s open hours until December 29, 2024. If you love Christmas, it’s a can’t miss for the entire family!

The whimsical Skinny Art of Mark Smith!

If you love whimsical, inventive works of art, head over to Spanish Village Art Center in Balboa Park. The walls of Gallery 21 are now bursting with happily tipsy, distorted watercolor paintings known as Skinny Art. Skinny Art is the specialty of San Diego artist Mark Smith!

Buildings, rooftops and landscapes tilt every which way in Mark’s delightfully elongated images. While his perspectives might be dizzy and uncertain, his sharp watercolors are minutely detailed–he paints over pencils. One might say his unique art is kind of realistic, kind of surreal.

Mark also creates totem-like sculptures containing old objects from years past. When I viewed these skinny sculptures I felt a sweet rush of nostalgia. You must see them with your own eyes! Then perhaps bring some great artwork home–all the pieces in Gallery 21 are available for purchase.

Mark is a super cool guy who loves to talk with those visiting the gallery. I really enjoyed my visit a few days ago!

You need to step into Gallery 21 by December 16, 2024, which is the final day of this very cool exhibition.

The restored Botanical Building opens in Balboa Park!

In 2024, the highlight of December Nights in Balboa Park is the opening of the restored Botanical Building, one of San Diego’s iconic landmarks!

After a two and a half year restoration project, which saw its steel skeleton repaired and new wood lath installed, the Botanical Building now more closely resembles how it originally appeared when it first opened during the 1915 Panama-California Exposition!

Enjoy these photographs, taken shortly after the historic structure reopened this afternoon.

WOW!!!

The interior of the Botanical Building now appears much more airy, light-filled and spacious. The amazing lath roof is more prominent, now that tall, leafy old trees have been trimmed down or removed.

Most of the new plants and trees still have much growing to do. Two beautiful new fountains greet visitors at either end of the garden. And, for the holiday season, many poinsettias are colorfully displayed!

Thank you Forever Balboa Park, the City of San Diego, and all those involved in restoring one of our city’s true treasures!

Holiday crafts made by blind and low vision creators!

Can you believe it? All of these beautiful holiday crafts were hand made by blind and low vision creators!

I was stunned to see all the amazing work. The Blind Community Center of San Diego has a booth along El Prado in Balboa Park during December Nights. It features these amazing crafts, all of which are for sale. Make sure to swing by and be inspired, too! Perhaps make a purchase!

The Blind Community Center of San Diego, which has been enriching the lives of blind and low vision people for over 70 years, has a broken elevator. I was told that if you provide funds to repair the elevator, they’ll gladly name the elevator in your honor!

The Grinch invades San Diego at December Nights!

The grumpy, grouchy, grievous green Grinch has invaded San Diego this weekend during December Nights!

Happy people beware! I spotted the Grinch all over the place as I walked around Balboa Park during San Diego’s epic holiday event!

Once again, the Grinch is trying to steal Christmas at the Old Globe theatre! He seems very persistent.

Oh, my! The Grinch is peering over the Old Globe’s gift shop!

Thank goodness! That’s just a watercolor painting by Spanish Village artist Gabriel Stockton!

Now a grinning green Grinch has invaded the Festival of Trees inside the Casa del Prado!

The sneaky Grinch has managed to hide inside a Christmas tree!

No Grinch hiding here that I can find.

The Grinch wouldn’t dare hang out around this big, happy Santa bear at the Japanese Friendship Garden!

Does the Grinch work for the City of San Diego? Once again, San Diego’s Community Christmas Tree in Balboa Park has been completely ignored or forgotten.

There’s so much joy and happiness at December Nights, I can’t imagine the Grinch would linger here.

Santa Claus at the International Cottages is working on expanding his jolly belly.

These merry Santa helpers are ready to fend off the Grinch with their sticks.

My heart skipped a beat when I thought this was a green Grinch. It’s actually a happy Christmas tree!
