Today is the first Saturday of the announced COVID-19 pandemic.
I thought I’d take a midday walk in San Diego, to see what I might see.
I headed from Cortez Hill up Sixth Avenue on the west side of Balboa Park, turned east on University Avenue in Hillcrest, then headed south down Park Boulevard. I meandered a little through Balboa Park, before returning to downtown San Diego.
I saw less traffic than usual. Fewer people were about. I suppose many are hunkered down, to avoid possible exposure to the coronavirus. I only saw a handful of older people, which is a good thing. They need to be particularly careful.
Balboa Park was much less crowded than usual.
As you can see in some of the upcoming photographs, various parts of the park have temporarily closed for public safety.
Everyone, take care!

Thank you for the photo tour – stay safe and well šæ
It’s just so sad and disappointing to me that so many have bought into the fear and panic. In 2009 there was a much stronger and deadlier virus and none of this panic, closure, etc. happened then.
It seems COVID-19 is a bit more contagious than flu. And it’s still not fully understood. The news media loves sensationalism and likes to point fingers for political reasons, but I wonder to what extent the power of social media, which is most successful when it exploits raw emotion, is making people more anxious. We also have generations who’ve grown up in a culture now obsessed with end-of-the-world scenarios–you see it in movies frequently.
So strange to see everywhere so quiet and empty. I wonder who the missing shoe belongs to? Its been a bit like this in the UK over the last few days, places seem so quiet and empty. I’m in a more rulal area, but its certanly a lot more quiet than usual. Best wishes and hope you all stay safe and well.
This pandemic situation will put a lot of people to the test. I’ve been working from home for a long time and I can tell you that everything gets easier once a routine has been established. Don’t be afraid to take breaks or naps. Physical exercise is good for mental health. Have fun cooking new things. Read lots of books. Hang in there! Cheers
