It’s going to be hot this weekend. So I’m planning on taking it easy–do some reading by the water, perhaps write something.
Meanwhile, I thought it would be fun to create even more digital oil paintings!
My recent walk in San Clemente Canyon has inspired me to select a few past photos of nature’s beauty, and transform them into “paintings” with GIMP’s graphic Oilify filter.
If you think you recognize the ocean at Torrey Pines State Reserve, the San Diego River, Mount Laguna, snow at Cuyamaca Rancho State Park, and Mission Trails Regional Park–in no particular order–you’d be correct!

This is playful, fun, invites us to see the same thing differently — and, because you credit the way you created the works, entirely honest. I make that last point only because I’m currently following an online university course about art fraud/forgery across time, and it gets us thinking about definitions of real, fake, authentic, copy, fraud, forgery… Also about authentic/inauthentic (and who defines it?) in other fields. Can a woman “authentically” write in a man’s voice? and on we go… but no problems here, just curiosity and playfulness and appreciation for different ways to explore and honour the same thing…

If the photographs weren’t mine to begin with, I wouldn’t alter them digitally and publish them as “my” work, even if the photos were in the public domain. But I know many people do that sort of thing. Doesn’t seem right.
